What he is building those panels out of is 2” I.D. oilfield tubing. It’s not drill pipe. It is seamless D.O.M. tubing. Drawn Over Mandrel. It’s a lot stronger than black pipe. It’s much better steel. I would not build free standing panels out of regular black pipe if they are going to be moved and handled a lot.
Thank you! We love our coop, I built it last spring and it has worked out great, we still need to finish painting it though. We are eventually going to move it over next to our house and I want to build a really nice chicken run with a roof over it for them also.
I've never seen that method used to notch pipe, but it sure appears to provide good fit-up. Question: you mentioned that the chop saw is set at 35 degrees - Does that angle work for any diameter of pipe? If not, is there a formula for determining the proper angle of cut? Thanks in advance for your reply!
So 35 degrees will work with any diameter of pipe as long as the pipe you are joining it with is the same size as the pipe you are saddling. For sizing to different sizes of pipe I’m not exactly sure the formula but there’s is a book called “The Pipe Fitters Blue Book” that would have all that info in it
Hey brother good video I work as a welder and have never seen coping done that way thank you for the tip with the price of wood I’m leaning towards steal pipe to build my carport.

@luthi Ranch,a distinct lack of drill pipe in the U.K. we have to settle for 40*40 box 3 mm wall then send it away for galvo,it’s alright but your drill pipe is so much stronger
I never thought about other countries having a hard time finding drill pipe but that makes sense. There are quite a few oil fields and natural gas fields around us and in the surrounding states so it’s fairly easy to come buy
Use a hole saw to make saddle cuts. I cut makes two saddle cut ends, no grinding .use same size diameter hole saw. Use cutting oil . Did this back in 1990. Was shown by a Alaskan pipe welder. Stan decker
Only thing about.using a bandsaw is that the blade wants to twist on ya sometimes otherwise it's faster than the chopsaw. I got a deepcut milwaukee which is perfect for the job
I find a lot of mine online just searching the local classifieds and using google. Prices have about tripled over the last few years though. Most of the pipe is 31’-33’ long. I paid $35 a pipe about 5 years ago but now it’s close to $100 a pipe length.
To align the cuts, so that both ends are the same.... use the seam weld inside the pipe as a straight line. On a short piece of scrap pipe, cut the perfect saddle, then use it as a template.
Brian, watched the two videos on how you build those panels. Great work and thanks for sharing. What state do you live in to get all that snow? Also, how many cuts can you get out of that Diablo blade?
Thank you and you’re welcome! I live in western Wyoming right by the Idaho border. This is actually the first Diablo blade I’ve used and I haven’t worn it out yet but I was using Steelmax blades before and I’d get about 250 cuts out of them. That’s 250 cuts on 2 3/8” drill pipe though so I’m sure if you were cutting smaller types of metal you would get substantially more cuts out of them. I do feel like this Diablo blade is holding up about the same if not better than the Steelmax one.
