  • Join me as I observe the June 6 2024 Cedar Livestock Market Horse Sale
    I won't be bidding, however tempting it may be! I'm only here to observe and show you all what this auction is like.
    Located in Cedar City Utah, the Cedar Livestock Market Horse Sale is the only horse auction in Utah held monthly, and is one of only 2 or 3 horse auctions held throughout the state of Utah.
    This horse auction is scheduled for the first Thursday of each month.
    Here in Utah, the majority of horses are sold through KSL's classified ads, through private sale, or via word of mouth.
    Support farmers and ranchers. Without them, we wouldn't be alive.
    Thank you Shae at @freespiritequestrian for the content spark! You're an inspiration!

    Why do these "great local people" allow animals in unsound and deplorable condition to be sold at their facility? Horses are often shipped to other states to be resold to kill buyers, some animals will have multiple auction stickers on them. You can't be certain these horses aren't ending up on trucks heading to Canada or Mexico. Horses sold at or below meat prices automatically puts them at risk, look at their method of transport. They arrive in huge stock trailers to be sold by large scale horse traders or kill pen buyers who are part of the horse ship to slaughter problem. Utah may not have a huge Amish community but regardless they're a major contributor of unsound horses that are the result of a lack of proper vet care to get that last dollar instead of doing the correct thing and putting the animal down due to quality-of-life issues.

    • @FestiveEquestrian
      @FestiveEquestrian  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cherylmillard2067 The huge stock trailers you saw were full of cattle or sheep.
      Every single horse came via a private trailer, and left on a private trailer.
      No, we don't know for sure if all of them left to a good home, but I do know there were very few buyers bidding that bought more than 1 horse. I recognized a few buyers that bought multiple horses as local equine rescue folks.
      I 100% agree that people should not use auctions as dumping grounds for lame, sick, or elderly horses, but people are eager to be easily rid of a financial burden. Auction is the easiest way to do so, unfortunately.
      The people running the auction have absolutely zero control what animals come to their auction. They simply facilitate the sale. They have a weekly sale for cattle and other livestock that are usually bought by other cattlemen or sold to local butchers.
      They are very honest and disclosed to bidders any horse that was lame or old or had any issues that they could see. Of course, you can't see everything in just a few hours, like any auction animal. It's a risk no matter what. People will be dishonest in every corner of the world.

      @@FestiveEquestrian Watch the documentary called "Loose Horses" at that auction @2:21 their sign says they don't accept obviously sick, injured or bleeding, lame/can't bear weight on all four legs/feet, blind, and foals under 200 pounds. I realize that's not a large sample size, but some auctions are better than others.
      So yes, in the end, the people running the auctions can control in what condition they accept animals.

      @@Sarita-ci9wc These are not wild animals, these are domestic horses. The horse's leg was not broken. He may have been lame, but it was NOT the fault of the auction. People bring these horses (sick, injured, malnourished, old) to the auction to get rid of them quickly, and the majority of people purchasing them are ready to take care of them and help them heal. Again, the state of the animal is NOT the fault of the auction. They are simply facilitating a sale.
