- New cattle breeds don’t come around often, but when they do, the first question that will be asked is “what value does the breed offer to an already competitive beef genetics environment”? That’s a question that traditional Hereford breeders Frank Felton and John Gage set out to answer when they began the process of creating a Black Hereford bull in 1994. In that same year, the American Black Hereford Association was born, and in 2003, after several attempts, Joe Hoagland received an international breed designation, officially establishing Black Herefords as a distinct breed. Black Herefords are not Black Baldy’s and answering the question of how Black Herefords bring value to the beef industry is what this episode is all about.

Welcome back Pam
I’ve got 30 head of black baldie’s. I took black Angus cow and put a Hereford bull on them to get them. Best cow’s I’ve ever had. They breed back every year well into there teen’s they have a shorter gestation then any other breed I’ve ever had all have a 75lb Calf ever year no matter the bull I put on them i’ve never pulled a Calf even from first time heifer’s and they are the easiest cow’s to work they just work with you they don’t get worked up at all like other breeds and they are the Healthiest cow’s I’ve ever had. And any of the Black Baldy heifer’s out of the original Black baldy cow’s I’ve kept have made excellent mother also.
I don’t get the craze over black hide in the US… I need someone to help me understand why, is it mainly for winter?
Black hides are more favorable to the leather companies
I love this breed but its a Baldie but you cant beat that Angus Hereford cross
@johnnydavis3866 Yes. They're not even a Breed, but an Open Ended 2 Breed Unstabilized Compisite.....
I like the cross with the Angus Bull and A Hereford heifer , that way it comes out to be a baldie or a black white face Hereford which seems the same to me
Cows look good but those bulls look really small hipped dont seem to have alot of power overall leggy and thin
@@justindickie5555 that One especially was Flat Sided and Tight Middled.
@justindickie5555 both Calves in the Pic are Runny Eyed....
The mothering ability of a Hereford cannot be matched…
@hessranch Low Weaning Weights, Crappy Udders that Calves cannot Nurse......
@@hessranch LOL 😆
@@Garybob-e9q Well, we’ve only been raising them for a century so I’m sure we don’t know as near as much as you.😂
@hessranch Herefords are just like Dogs, Horses, and Trucks. Good Ones are Invaluable, Bad Ones are Worthless.
@@hessranch Out West where there's no Fescue, I would agree.
I would never raise black hided cows in hot climates.
"This is not a black baldy" . . . It is.
Got several cows like these and were bred by accident.
🍽️
Why you want them black? It’s just piggybacking off of black angus marketing…
Not sure other than like you say people think its Angus. I do know that in most sale barns black calves bring more money.
Great! Now, we've got Black Ones with Bad Udders, and 400 lb Weaning Weights!?? @garywoods148
All black calves that enter a feed yard are considered certified Angus. Why not sell what pays most?
@shanepadgett7587 Without Age and Source Verification, the Color Identification Only Dilema will continue...
Qualifies for Angus programs.
