    I've come up with 20 ways of doing this (including this method, but with major doubts cause I overthink everything) and watched as many videos, but all would either be far too labor-intensive, too costly, or potentially hazardous. This is, by far, THE BEST tutorial, including improvements over the ideas I had. You're brilliant! You earned a new subscriber! THANK YOU!!!!

    That looks awesome, that's a great effect. The only thing is that here in America we have Colored paints, but I'm sure they're similar to your Coloured paints. LOL. I'm looking at doing faux wall effects for my Halloween haunt I'm building, and your channel got recommended. I like the intro/outro music too... and that point when the words Measure Twice didn't fit was hilarious. 🙂

    This looks very realistic. I used joint compound and did not paint the wall first. I mixed sanded grout with a little water and glue and painted that on the grout lines after the brick was done. This gave the feel of mortar.

Hoping to paint them over the weekend and maybe add extra texture as you advised. Really easy and at a budget: 35eur large ready mix plaster bucket, 5 rolls of 1cm double sided tape (couldn’t find masking tape other than the one inch) 7,50eur; trowel was 11eur, some plastic cover for the floor 5eur. Really amazing! Thanks!!!!

    Looks good! I wonder if it would be useful to mix some of the red or orange paint into the redi-mixed plaster in order avoid any white spots showing through. I've never had any problem mixing drywall filler with latex paint, so it would probably work.

    • @MEASURETWICE
      @MEASURETWICE  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have seen some people do that before and it works but I wanted to have a mix of colours for my bricks so some of them are grey toned and some orange etc. I feel like it would be harder to achieve that mixed brick look doing it that method🤔

  • @FourJaysFour

    Anyone worked out a way to modify this for exterior? Like a faux brick skirt around foundation wall?

    • @MEASURETWICE
      @MEASURETWICE  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FourJaysFour hi, you would be best to do your own research but I just asked chat gpt and it had said this:
      Key Considerations for Using Plaster Outdoors:
      Type of Plaster:
      -Cement-based plasters (e.g., stucco) are commonly used for exterior applications because they are durable and resistant to weather. These plasters can withstand rain, wind, and temperature changes better than traditional gypsum plaster.
      -Lime-based plasters are also used outdoors due to their breathability and ability to handle moisture. They are less prone to cracking compared to cement-based plasters but might require more maintenance over time.
      Waterproofing:
      -Additives: To improve water resistance, waterproofing additives can be mixed with the plaster. This helps prevent water penetration, which can lead to cracking, mold growth, and other issues.
      -Sealants: After the plaster has cured, applying a water-repellent sealant can further protect it from moisture.
      Surface Preparation:
      -Substrate: The surface to which the plaster is applied should be clean, stable, and properly prepared. A rough surface provides better adhesion, which is crucial for exterior applications.
      -Bonding agents: These can be used to improve the adhesion of the plaster to the substrate, especially on smooth or non-porous surfaces.
      Application:
      -Thickness: Plaster applied outdoors should be of sufficient thickness to withstand environmental stressors. Thin layers may crack or deteriorate more quickly.
      -Curing: Proper curing is essential to prevent rapid drying, which can cause cracking. Plaster applied outdoors should be protected from direct sunlight and strong winds during the curing process.
      Climate:
      -Temperature and humidity: Extreme temperatures or high humidity can affect the plaster's curing process and durability. It's important to apply the plaster in suitable weather conditions and protect it during adverse weather.
      Hope this helps!💗

    I’ve been looking at all the faux brick video’s and came across yours..... I can say that your technique is by far the most realistic look of bricks! I think to even add a little joint compound to the grout lines may or may not make it more authentic. I saw one of the other youtubers use the compound for grout lines with faux rock walls and it really did look like real cement. Just a thought.....what do you or anyone else think?
    PS.......I keep looking to see if you have new videos but nothing. Are you taking a hiatus or quitting DIY projects?

      @MEASURETWICE  ปีที่แล้ว

    Yours is the best out of all tutorials i watched! I'm going through your video over 10 times already trying to get the courage and start doing this on my wall. May I ask what kind of paint you used to paint on the plaster? Can i just use any kind? I'm thinking of using acrylic paint but where I'm from, they usually only sell acrylics that dries to a semi-matte finish, so I'm kinda worried the sheen might ruin the look. And how long did you let the plaster dry before painting on it? I've read it takes 24 hrs for RTU plasters but considering the thickness of it, did it take longer to dry? sorry for the questions 😁

    • @MEASURETWICE
      @MEASURETWICE  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you💗 I used matt wall emulsion, just standard wall paint. I think you probably could use acrylic paint but might be better to try and get matte paint, semi-matte would probably work too though. If you don't have a light pointed directly at it then it might not look as shiny. You could also maybe apply a matte clear top coat to it. The plaster was thick so I ended up leaving it for about 2 weeks I think just to make sure it was fully dry😊

    Hey lovely, this video is amazing and an absolute godsend. I've started plastering my bedroom wall using your video as a rough template (must have watched it at least 20 times so far😂) I'm using join and filling compound, now my problem happens once it all starts drying, cracks start to show. I've only done a small section of the wall, as you said work in sections. Should I be using actual plaster or does that matter? Also it's a wee bit crumble. Would be good to know. Ps love the accent 😊

    • @MEASURETWICE
      @MEASURETWICE  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, it's better to start with a clean base so if there is wallpaper it's better to remove that. Did you do it on top of satin paint? Maybe it's just not sticking well🤔 You could always try sanding the wall to give it something to grip to instead of a flat smooth surface💗

    • @captaintriker2671
      @captaintriker2671 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MEASURETWICE thank you for the advice.👍 Because it wasn't plaster I used (it was pointing cement) this gave me the problems. Fantastic. Looks great. But I'm a little confused as to why you removed the tape prior to adding the second coat of plaster. Wouldn't it have made more sense to apply the second coat, and THEN remove the tape? I'm just wondering why . Was there a reason why? Through trial and error did you find it looks better to remove the tape prior to adding the second coat? Also, could you have waited to remove the tape after the painting too? 🤔 Just curious if there was a reason for removing the tape so early in the process.

    • @MEASURETWICE
      @MEASURETWICE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, thank you😊 I thought about removing the tape after the second coat of plaster and the paint but I felt like a lot more could you wrong with that. If the plaster ended up being too hard, it would've been really hard to remove the tape without it breaking. I also felt like to much plaster might chip off when removing the tape when it was completely dry. I decided to paint the bricks after because I thought painting it before removing the tape would make the colours look like they all blended too much. Like rather than having one brick be one colour and another be a different colour, they would all just look like they blended in together, if that makes sense. I would've also had to go back and paint the edges of the brick once the tape was removed anyway so I just decided to paint it all together😊

    That looks fantastic and I'm keen to do some DIY! Just a question (for now :P ) my wall is already grey. Can I not leave as is, do the taping and plastering, then just do Silica + Grey paint for the pretend grout at the end?

    • @MEASURETWICE
      @MEASURETWICE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be a little harder to paint in between the bricks neatly doing it that way but it would be possible. I would recommend buying quite a few little paintbrushes for painting that method so that when the paint brushes get clogged with the sand you can swap to a new one so it can continue to be smooth and not messy😁

    I'm just honestly curious, why not remove the tape after all the painting and stuff is done? to avoiding re-painting the grout lines. like will the tape be harder to remove?

    • @MEASURETWICE
      @MEASURETWICE  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If I removed the tape after painting then it would be really hard to remove because the plaster would be hard. It would mean that the edges of the bricks would be white where the tape would pull off some of the brick so I would have to paint round the edges again anyway. Also when painting, I wanted each brick to be a different colour so there was more variation but I wouldn't get that if I had painted all the bricks together. I have seen some people paint them that way but they have made the plaster of the bricks thin rather than as thick as mine so they can easily remove the tape and the bricks never really look real

    Tip. Find a piece of wood the size of the brick you want. Trace the wood across the wall. Takes much less time. Also..use all purpose joint compound. Cheap and can be applied thick. When it's applied thick...it cracks naturally. Give a great brick look!

    that is absolutely amazing! well done. One thing for future reference you could have done is go out and buy brick layers mortar from your local brick shop --- the one that is very sticky and, then get a tuck pointing tool and a finishing tool and just put the mortar in the middle of each crack instead of painting it. That is what they would do with real brick so you literally couldn't tell the difference even close up. But super amazing how you made the bricks with the plaster and created the colors. well done!

      I actually did this brick wall technique in my bathroom again and used mortar haha it will be in an upcoming video. It honestly looks exactly like brick, you couldn't tell the difference😁 Thank you❤

      @@MEASURETWICE hi. I’ve just finished the plastering part of the wall and will be painting soon. I’m interested how you would use the mortar instead of paint.

    • @MEASURETWICE

      @@keex1000 That's great! Basically paint the bricks and then mix up your mortar and I just put gloves on and used my finger to apply the mortar in between the bricks. I kind of pushed it in with my finger so the middle of the mortar line was deeper than the edges to give more of a 3D look like this: sullivanengineeringllc.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/img_2632-1024x768.jpg Let me know if you have any more questions😁

    Excuse me, why you didn' start this project on that "original" white wall ? Why did you repaint it ( with that mix of grey wall paint+sand)in the step no.1?🤔

    • @MEASURETWICE
      @MEASURETWICE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I started with a grey wall so that when I went over with the paint at the end, to touch it up, it would be a lot quicker to paint because I wouldn't have to carefully paint everything between the lines😊

      I read online that some people were having issues peeling it off so I was worried about that. It would also chip of some plaster that hadn't been painted so I thought it would be best to peel it off first☺
