Tanker Fire

  • We shot this amazing scene from our news chopper. A tanker carrying 5600 gallons of jet fuel collided with a Jeep. The tanker ignited, causing a huge fire for several hours. All lanes of highway 114 were closed for several hours, and crews from DFW Airport were brought in because of the jet fuel. No major injuries.

We were over the fire for a couple hours doing 'live' reports. It started about 20 minutes before we got there, and was burning when we left. Can't give you an exact duration... all I know is, it burned longer than we had fuel for the chopper

This reminds me of a similar fire on the H-1 Freeway in Honolulu, Hawaii in the late 1970s. Except that time, the burning fuel ran down into the storm drains and caused fires in other places where the drains were out in the open.

If you throw a match in a bucket of diesel, you will get the same result. You CAN ignite low volatile fuels. The catalyst is just to make it easier. If a vehicle collides with a tanker and catches fire, that's all the catalyst you need. If you are too obtuse to understand that, I can't help you.

The only reason to just stand back and watch it burn is because if get to close never know when it might blow cause it's gotten already to hot to put out. And you can't just put out jet fuel out with water and usually regular firetrucks don't carry as much foam to use on it as much as the airport fire engines do cause there made for that type of job. Also it takes special suites for to put out jet fuel cause it burns a lot hotter than regular gasoline and most stations don't carry those like th

Fuel in tanks only explode if they build up pressure faster than it can be released. Tanker have relief valves that will vent the pressure. But most tanker truck with flammable liquids are made from aluminum, so the tops will melt because there is no liquid fuel there to absorb the heat. This results in an open container of burning fuel, like a bucket of gasoline. The fuel will just burn off melting the sides as it's consumed. Tankers with propane will explode because those are steel.

It is a Cineflex mounted, gyro stabilized Ikegami 1080i 44X camera... actually a pretty small lens comapared to other aerial cameras. The reason for that is because they are mounted on an R44 helicopter, and need to keep the weight down. It was uploaded in Final Cut Pro and edited through that system. No video filters were used, so what you see is what was shot. I generally compressed the video to Quick Time Mpeg 4 for use on youtube.

like hell it would, even if you had a bucket full of JP-7, lit a match and threw the match into the bucket, it would put the match out, it's a very low VOLATILITY . It needs a catalyist called triethylborane which is used in `start-carts' to `start up' the sr71blackbird aircraft's 2 P&W JT-58 continously bled afterburning turbojets, that is why it is NOT like the other fuels. It also serves as the aircraft's coolant along with the aircraft's center of gravity.

I am aware of all that. There is no legal justification for the flammable designation.
The quotes I posted are from the FAA and the Army Corp of Engineers
From Jet A's material safety data sheet.
OSHA/NFPA FLAMMABILITY CLASS: 2 (COMBUSTIBLE) (see Section 14 for transportation classification)

May be reclassified for transportation as a COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID under conditions of DOT 49 CFR
