There's one big pain point I have with this. If I have a google assistant playing a radio station on TuneIn or something similar, and I ask it to identify what's playing, it sees that it's my other device playing and just tells me the metadata from it, which is usually just the radio station name and nothing about the song!

I actually managed to find a song I only remembered the melody of for about 20 years. Stuck in my head but could never find it no matter how hard I tried... Until a couple of months ago using exactly this. I was mindblown that 20 years of on-off searching finally came to an end with some humming of what I could remember of a melody from such a long time ago.

The most important thing is the melody. You can try humming, playing a flute, or even just sing with a completely wrong lyrics. As long as the melody is correct then Google will detect it.

For those who are OK giving Google -- or any apps -- access to their microphones 24/7/365. LOL.

Plus: for those who don’t speak English and want to guess a song in English, if you type whatever sound like in your native language that resembles the original music name, it matches 100%. That’s superb.

It was an insanely annoying commercial.

After trying a lot of robots like this, I finally found the song I had in my head for months on this Google bot. I was very surprised because it was a '60s Italian pop song. But I must say it wasn't very easy to find the functionality at this time - a couple years ago. I hope Google changed its visibility / accessibility of this tool.

The search a song feature on the iPhone apparently has been removed. Unsure if it’s the same for android but it seems like they ( google ) never updated it to the new IOS app. You can do a regular voice search for info, but the “search a song” has been gone for a long time now ( on IOS so far )

Been using this feature extensively for sometime now. Works much better than most apps and i've had so much success using it. Even for some obscure things i never thought would work. Humming, singing the lyrics, lalalala-ing all works.

Another cool feature is with the alarms. When the alarm goes instead of fumbling to find your phone you can just say snooze or stop and the alarm will respond accordingly, which I've found myself using quite frequently

The "now playing" feature is one of my favorite features in Pixels. Ignoring the whole phone always listening privacy thing, which is a problem - it's unobtrusive in terms of usability. Any time something is playing around me I only need to have a look at the phone to know what it is. Only issue is sometimes it just doesn't come up, since it probably struggles to identify a song.

The late Sony Ericsson (Sony Mobile now) used to do this in an app called TrackID for it's phones since 2005, even before the "Smartphone era".
The app was discontinued in 2017 as Shazam became the main app for Music ID at the time.
