Amber: "What happened to Buzzsaw?"
Ben Richards: "He had to split."
“There’s Sub-Zero, now, just plain Zero!”
Richards: I’ll be back
Killian: Only in a rerun
Classic line
Best line.
Awesome film I’ve watched the running man at least 30 times.
The best comeback to Arnie's "I'll be back" catchphrase imho.
I love it when they base films on the UK in 2024
🙈😂😂😂😂😂
I came here to say that
It’s a fantastic film!!!! Watched loads of times 🔥🔥👌🏻
Whats UK?
*checks online*
Ohh, you mean archaic name of Airstrip One. You people are silly. Next you will call it Albion or something.
In two and a half years, we will be in the 'Children of Men' timeline.
Killian: You bastard! Drop dead!
Richards: I don't do requests
i'd buy that for a dolla.
Wel that hit the spot.
Richards: "I'll be back"
KILLIAN: *ONLY IN A RERUN*
@@TheBathrobeWizard another great exchange
Best quote of the movie, the sweet old lady going: I choose Ben Richards! That boy is one mean motherf*cker!
Richard Dawson was awesome! If you saw this at the theater in the 80s as I did, you would have known Dawson from hosting many years of game show family feud. That just adds to the film in a way that many young viewers would miss.
Definitely a masterstroke by the casting department.
Dawson was also in a great Outer Limits episode The Invisibles and Hogan's Heros. People forget he started as an actor before getting that sweet game show money where he probably had to do a lot less work. No lines to remember.😂😂😂😮
Hogan's Heroes was syndicated and ran a lot during the 70s and 80s. Once heard that real life former WWII pows loathed the show during its original run. A case of Too Soon I suppose.
I love the fact that Richard Dawson finally gets to play himself in a movie...
A point lost on millennials and Gen Z viewers
I thought you meant Richard Dawkins for a moment lmao 🤣
And he gets the best one liner to Arnold's 'I'll be back'
@@OldMusicFan83 Not lost on this Millenial!
...But that's only because my grandparents had the VHS of this and I read the back, where it explained that he was the original host of family feud.
@@OldMusicFan83This millennial had Game Show Network in the house growing up and I ADORED Richard Dawson in Family Feud and Match Game.
I'm 38. My grandfather made me discover/watch this movie when I was a child. It was on VHS 🙂
RIP Pépé Jojo
Rip. My Dad the same.
Lol I saw it on VHS too!
"My gas line! My gas line! Go to commercials! Go to commercials!"

@@jwnj9716 AHHHHHH!!!

@@macklee6837 What a hothead
"Here is Dave Cullen, now plain Cullen!"
So who's he culling? All of 'em?
Sorry Dave.....but it could be an awesome character pun in the right Running Man type context.
When somebody told me about Hunger Games, I said "Didn't that used to be called Running Man?"
You have others that came before like The Prize of Peril (1983) & Das Millionenspiel (1970).
battle royale too
Soon to be a real sport at the rate the world is collapsing.
It's one of many storytelling premises. Not exactly the same as a "trope" or cliché, but a premise is fairly generic. King always knows to begin with those and then just make everything weird. And TBH, he wasn't thrilled about this adaptation.
@@jwnj9716 Ohhh... Can't wait to find and watch them :)
"Here is Subzero, now... plain Zero."
Well, isnt that actually better, Arnold? You got him out of the negative! 👍
Giving a hand up, and not a hand out.
That line always struck as Arnie's direct creative input.
@@mroctober3657 Cheese so good you can spread it on a cracker! 😝
At least he took care of him. He was a real pain in the neck.
One of the best and most underrated arnie one liners.😂
Running man isn’t science fiction. It’s a documentary.
But instead of a game show feeding us BS, we have the MSM instead!
Richard Dawson was a standout in this film. I can't think of anyone who could have played the role better.
Maybe Bob Barker? But yeah, Dawson was amazing in this film.
He was brilliant.
The man was a real life TV game show host in the 80s.
Richard Dawson (Killian) was famous to all US households as the TV game show host of Family Feud for a decade when this film came out so it was fun to see him play an evil version of what everyone saw him as.
Dawson was also cast in Hogan's Heroes as a British soldier. There were times when both shows would be on in the same day which kinda freaked me out when I was really young and didn't quite comprehend the whole aging thing.
@@whatbrickBetween those, he was a panelist on The Match Game. He was so good that for the bonus round the eventually brought in a wheel the contestants had to spin because everyone picked Dawson.
In a hilarious moment, the first time it was spun, it landed on Dawson's name.
I put it at the level of Demolition Man in terms of deceivingly dumb sci-fi action movies with social commentary way beyond what you'd expect. Besides, it predicted smart TVs, deepfakes, touch screens and online shopping.
There was a time when Hollywood knew how to make a point, without bashing you over the head with it and then demanding you watch a powerpoint presentation, to explain what you were just bashed over the head with. A simpler, yet more complex time.
im still waiting on the 3 shells though 😂
I noticed the 16:9 widescreen TVs. Those never became mainstream untill the late 2000s. People had the early versions but those were extremely expensive as with all new tech.
Last seasons winners....
No..... last seasons losers
This is a great film has 1984 vibes and unfortunately it's chilling how the media do this in real life
I recommend The Prize of Peril (1983) & Das Millionenspiel (1970).
Running Man is definitely one of Schwarzenegger's more underrated and underappreciated films.
Agreed, i've always thought of it as a genuine guilty pleasure. And furthermore, it's one i haven't seen for many years now, so had forgotten much of it. Unfortunately though, Dave's supposed "Review" here ended up being much more than that. As he has also basically taken the time to recount pretty much every scene of the story! Thus partly ruining my opportunity now for a somewhat fresh viewing.
I love the main theme for it's score .. It's so great. Classic movie .. One of Arnold's best. I didn't realize it was under appreciated. Conan, Terminator, Predator , and Running Man is there for sure. At least it's always been for me.
I love it so much
"screw your freedom"
Yeah, I love this movie.
I remember getting this film on VHS back in around 1989-90 as one of my Christmas presents from my parents. I loved it and gave it multiple watches. I was around 10/11 years old! I got Predator, Aliens, and Robocop for that Christmas too!
That sounds like a good Christmas. I'd say, "oh my goodness you were far too young" but I'd seen those movies by that age too 😂
@@racheljames7 Haha it was a great Christmas, and it started me early on my physical media collection endeavours.
Your parents obviously had good taste in movie...my father bought me Robocop for my birthday one year
A Proper Upbringing! I salute you!
So YOU'RE the kid that would get movies for Christmas presents. That always seemed weird to me.
hey light bulb hey christmas tree!
“Running Man” (1987) was ahead of its time.
"Das Millionenspiel" from 1970 is a German Movie, and has almost the same Story. At the 1st time at Television, some german people thought show was real, and some were trying to applying as Hunter or Canditate for the Show.
What happened to buzzsaw?
Ah he had to split
A precursor to Bone Tomahawk.
It's Showtime.
the film that predicted deep fake AI pretty accurately
Maria Conchita Alonso (Amber) was so Beautiful when this film was made!
nowadays they would make her gay and boring - and probably disabled.
I agree, but when it comes to her acting - or at least her line delivery - she leaves a lot to be desired. Same goes for her performance in Predator 2.
She was pretty in Predator 2 with the cute haircut. She actually looked hot in Predator 2.
After being in such a movie you would have thought Arnie would have known better than to tell people "Screw your freedom."
I suppose that's the standard mindset of the professional pretender.
Life imitating art!
Arnie loves taking jabs. He was ready to give fouci a big suck on the glory hole
In the 90s, they wanted to air capital punishment and talk of making duels to death legal again and on tv.
God I miss the 90s
Who knew how prophetic this movie would be today with certain aspects.
It's a boss film. One of Arnie's best. You also missed the fact Mick Fleetwood has a cameo in it as the resistance leader.
And he is playing his future self
I never noticed that.
Dweezil Zappa, as well!
Interesting how movies that are 40-60 years old point out a dystopian future that we notice coming to fruition.
Some of my favorite items: 1. Mick Fleetwood, who mentions that the state broke up his band. 2. Richard Dawson calling for the Department of Justice, Entertainment Division 3. The way Buzzsaw's voice changes as Arnold is dispatching him.
“Hello cutie pie. One of us is in big trouble.”
"dystopian worlds with a violent reality TV series for the masses" ... IOW, 2024?
Richard Dawson was wonderful in this movie. I remember him saying (paraphrasing here) that for decades, the media have told Americans what to wear, what to eat, what to think.
I've watched this movie more than a dozen times over the years, most recently last month. I find that it's held up better with each viewing. A fine, entertaining film.
You might enjoy The Prize of Peril (1983) & Das Millionenspiel (1970).
I love The Running Man. Its criminally underrated.
@@jwnj9716 never seen either one, and I'll check them out. Thanks!
The most preposterous part of the movie is when Richards is on trial and shown the video recording of him flying the helicopter. The ‘recording’ is the actual scene from the film of him in the cockpit complete with different camera angles. I never noticed that as a kid.
😂 Same here. Watched it again recently with my husband and he pointed that out, to which I replied, "that's how cameras work in the future. It's a future camera." 😂
I love that around the same time Mick Fleetwood was guesting on TNG as a fish.
That dude has range.
If you wanna see something similar, I recommend The Prize of Peril (1983) & Das Millionenspiel (1970). They are based on a short story that came before the Running Man.
Interesting is, that the Killer in Das Millionenspiel is a well known German comedian and actor Dieter Hallervorden, who play against the grain he's known for
Robert Sheckley, who wrote this story is one of the greatest SciFi Authors.
I think when Steven King worte the novel he said in an Interview that he was inspired by the German movie "Das Millionenspiel" with had a similar story...
Casting Richard Dawson was genius. A well known game show host and panelist, it's great how Killian acts just like Dawson on camera and is this huge bastard off screen.
The "I'd buy that for a dollar" guy watches running man every night!
This is what i like about your channel when your talking about somthing you watched.
The scary thing is that the movie's premise of using CGI face replacement technology to implicate someone that is innocent is a reality now. People could easily do this. Couple this with all of the other social, political and media manipulation aspects that are also part of our current society, and the movie becomes a bit prescient.
This movie has one of my all-time favorite movie lines: "Mr. Richards, I'm your court-appointed theatrical agent."
"Screw your freedom" - Arnie....
ONE of the BEST lines I remember from that film is when 'Amber' and 'Amy' sees 'Ben' being escorted down the corridor, and 'Amy' says "Jeez, he could have r@ped you then killed you, or killed you then r@ped you" 🤣🤣🤣
In the book (Stephen King as Richard Bachman) the main character does the game (which is outside with people incentivised to rat him out) to feed his starving family who are killed by junkies while he is being processed for the game and when he finds out he hijacks a plane and goes full Alan Snackbar on corporate headquarters.
That is exactly _not_ what the book is about. I read it, and _Rage_ (one of the other Bachman books), in the '80s.
Like all the best King adaptations this movie has only a passing resemblance to the source material.
@@somercet1 that is what happens, he volunteers for one of the death/maim shows (probably hoping for the heart attack treadmill show) and the corporation hides it from him despite knowing when he first applies, then they cheat repeatedly when it comes to the tapes he has to post periodically and offer him a job once he hijacks one of their planes which he crashes into headquarters once he finds out his family is dead anyway.
"Hey, Christmas tree!" 😂

"Screw your freedom!" ~ Arnold Schwarzenegger.
That's the personal man. Schwarzenegger the action movie hero was entertaining.
I remember watching this with my father on TV here in the States. I loved it as a boy of 10. Today, I fear its plot is oddly accurate to where we're headed in the West.
I can't wait for you to do Kindergarten Cop.
Dominiiicccc!
When I first watched the movie I did not realize it was Mick Fleetwood as the resistance leader
Who loves you, and who do you love!?

Without further a-do....
Was told the killian actor was actually a very popular game show host in the US.
The rest of us missed that layer of irony
DAMN the female dancers WERE GORGEOUS!!! Yeah back in the days when films portrayed women as... HOT! And NOT in the 'Nowadays sociably acceptable 'Hot' ...' Back then - Lycra, leggings, leggy, slim, toned/athletic, flat tums, and yeah, the 'Big hair' haha, but NO 'Vasten assens'/'Dumper trucks'... THEMS were the days! 👌👍😏😉 😎🇬🇧
I love the fact that Richard Dawson is just basically playing a psychotic version of himself in this film
Watched this with my 16 year old son recently. He appreciated it
Dave why did you kill the computing forever content? That always struck me as the most important work- preventing us from falling under the wims of absolute tyranny.
Fantastic documentary
Wow, forgot about this one. Always liked this movie. My favorite line is when Richards & Killian meet at the end of Killian: You look pissed Ben.
Basically, it's a futuristic Rome. Also, it's interesting that they were pretty accurate about their prediction of using CGI on human faces. It's not quite that advanced yet, but it's getting there.
Reminds me of ‘They Live.’ On the surface, a big dumb 80’s action/sci-fi film, but has relevant and deep underlying themes.
I say to my dog 'who loves you, and who do you love,.... daddy'
I remember watching it in the theater back in the day. It was a lot of escapist fun, like movies used to be back then.
I have not watched this movie in ages but i have very fond memories!
Wow, i never thought of this move being that deep. great analysis
Excellent analysis. I agree.
"Hey Light Head! Hey Christmas Tree!"
When it was released, I responded to the over the top action and comedy.
Now, with a chill running down my back.
This is such a solid movie. As well as recording great movies off TV, my brother bought a few VHS tapes. This Total Recall and Red Heat all came about the same time. I probably watched Total Recall the most and then this. Although I knew from the credits that Mick Fleetwood was a musician, I was never a big music man so his presence was never a big thing for me. But, looking back, it's kind of cool that he plays an older version of himself.
This is quite different to the book and is almost so different that both interpretations could work on screen if you got the tone right.
Richard Dawson absolutely hit it out of the park as the antagonist, as well. The only person to ever really have a great comeback to Arnold's "I'll be back" line.
Thank you for reviewing this! I always liked this movie, I was like 14 when it came out. It's really good 80s fun with a solid message!
If you like this movie - but you want more......play the arcade classic *Smash TV* - it's inspired by movies like this (and Robocop) and it's a hoot!
Ps.....its also available on the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis - I'd buy those for a dollar!
Whitman price and haddad, remember their names
“Basking in the Maui sun”
This movie is fantastic! “ here is subzero, now, plain zero”!
Richard Dawson deserves mention for playing Killian. At the time of the films release, he was the popular host of the game show "Family Feud", and he was great playing a villainous game show host, in this film.
Watched it from tv recently... the last time I've seen it was over 10 years ago. Almost forgotten what happened in the movie.
A bit rough around the edges, weird costumes and overacting won't make this a masterpiece but nonetheless the movie's underlying dark tones couldn't be more recent. Yester year's dystopian fantasy technology, now a real thing... how disguised propaganda controls the masses... the fate of the ''winners''... all that kept me intrigued, invested and hooked.
Magnificent one liners. Mick's Broadcast is one of my favorite pieces of movie music. I also liked the understated and quiet ending scene. The running time (pun intended) was also perfect.
Ngl, the movies at first viewing just okay, but now as seen through more mature eyes, I found new apprectiation for it.
Been 20 years since I've seen this, thanks Dave. Time to find it.
According to Schwarzenegger's autobiography, 'Total Recal', the producers waited until he was out of town and fired the director he'd signed up for and replaced him with a cheaper, less experienced one who would shoot what they wanted. He was tv director and that is why it has a narrower feel.
It'd be cool to see reviews of independent projects. I wish more channels did that. But it's probably not popular nor profitable.
The movie also pulls a lot from pro wrestling. Obviously, there's Jesse Ventura as Captain Freedom. The stalkers are inspired by how cartoony the the WWF was getting at the time.
Even the concept was reminiscent of "jobber" matches that were common at the time where a name wrestler with a flashy gimmick would wrestle a fairly average looking guy in a dull outfit and beat him easily.
I saw this in the theatre, and really liked it. When I first saw it, the best part was the revenge against Killian in the finale. Now I just watch for details since I know how it ends. Demolition Man is one I'd put next to this movie, along with Total Recall. All three are fun, dystopian sci-fi movies from the same era. The Max Headroom television show from around the same time would be another recommendation, it is not as goofy but outstanding writing, acting, and execution. Dave, you should watch this show, it only had fourteen episodes, but I think it is one of the best, and most unique television shows of all time, constantly overlooked because it only had those fourteen episodes. At least watch the first few (skip episode two, though. Watch that one later). Another forgotten classic from that time is Sledge Hammer!, a Dirty Harry spoof that ran for two seasons on ABC, staring David Rasche. It was created around that actor, and it is such a funny show!
One of my favorite movies. Thanks for giving it a thumbs up!
One of my favourite films. Arnie on his A game, epic one liners, foresight and lots of action and cheese. Lovely.
One of my favourite Arnie films. It was such a good time to see this on TV when I was younger
Watched in on the theater and was amazing. Still is a masterpiece.
I enjoy it,love the bit after the credits, where they do a commercial
I loved The Running Man then and now.
I still remember the first time I saw the book (a blue paperback under SK's pseudonym Richard Backman) the blurb on the back cover sounded so interesting (oddly enough I think the scripwrighter only read the blurb) I finally got enough money to buy it (hey, it was hard to come up with 2$ back then) and read it, I loved it, and the movie was so dissapointing (see the comment about blurb) . With enough distance yeah, it does have some things going for it, but I am still really looking forward to the remake (where they say they will stick to the book more)
YES!! YES!! YES!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Cadre Cola
It always hits the spot!
Given the changes between the novel and the film, I wonder if someone will make a more faithful adaptation
Already in production, being directed by Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell as Richards. I understand shooting is about to start, if it hasn't already.
And it does promise to be a more faithful adaptation. . . although I can't help thinking that it'll still fall victim to "The Message ™".
0:30 His middle name's "Stewart?!" I recall a part where he's referred to as "Benjamin A. Richards."
0:41 Loosely based on it. More like "inspired by." In the book, Ben Richards is the most everyday Joe of everyday Joes.
This is one of my favourite movies, and one of the few I own on DVD. I love all the corny one-liners, and it's a half decent film for something so cheesy.
I've read the book too, which is maybe more realistic but less satisfying. From memory, in the book, Richards is badly wounded and flies a plane into the TV network building as his final act of revenge, instead of sending Killian down the chute and living happily ever after.
"Well, that hit the spot!"
Some of the best arnold quotes are from this
I saw this in the theater back in the day. Loved it then, love it now. Same for Total Recall and Predator.
Loved this movie growing up, havne't seen it in ages. I bet like Demolition Man it hits very different these days as an adult than it did back then.
Love Mick Fleetwood's little Star Trek references (:
If you like this type of story I'd recommend the comic LOBO Unamerican Gladiators.
I saw this film in the theater and later picked it up on DVD. I really like the Schwarzenegger films. However, I'm curious about how closely it follows the original story, which I have never read.
I think an interesting movie for you to review next could be Cloud Atlas.
I love this movie.
I saw it in the theatre when it came out . Good times
