I’ve been waiting to pick this movie up for years, and to be honest i’m perfectly happy getting just the blu-ray for 5.99 if the 4k isn’t up to par. kind of sucks we couldn’t get a superior 4k presentation but at least i get to save a few bucks. great movie, can’t wait to re-watch it.
I was on the fence about pre-ordering this as I have the previous blu-ray, and I’m glad I didn’t pull the trigger. Great informative review as always, Jeff. Sucks because we’ve all been waiting for this one for such a long time, and the film had the potential to be an outstanding 4K.
It already has a great 4k release. This guy is not a pro, just look how good reviews it got from the bluray website and others. I don't agree with him at all. The 4k version is way better than the blu ray. If people actually had a high end player they wouldn't trash the movie being to dark. On some of the high end Panasonic players you can adjust brightness much higher up to 4 levels. And when I say brighness I don't mean in overall brightness, it's pure HDR, so black levels remain just as black and only the HDR colors are brightened up
That Blu-ray is usually on sale at best buy for $5-6 like you said. I’ve only skipped over it due to the 4K eventually coming out, but we see how that went!
I just bought the blu ray for $6 at Amazon. I suspect Jeff's review here is gonna make some waves going forward, so I say get that blu ray on the cheap while you can.
The original blu-ray is also stellar too. The Director's Definitive Edition BD this time isn't a new cut, it's just been colour coded differently and some of the audio lowered (plus it has a few more extras). I wasn't going to buy it again just because Mann prefers the colours to be a bit different. It's Dolby TrueHD on the first blu-ray and DTS-HD MA on the re-release but they're both lossless so. They're all the same slightly edited Theatrical Cut.
Not sure about other players, but the Panasonics have a setting to increase the HDR brightness of the image to the TV. This is really useful for films that are either dimly mastered or the highlights don't go particularly bright.
My go-to version remains the 2009 Blu-ray from Warner: you have more picture in the frame, you have the original distributor logo opening it and, although it's already dull and monochromatic as it's always been on video, all you need to do is increase color saturation on your display to nearly recover the original color timing as seen on 35mm prints from 1995 so you can relive the theater experience... or close to it.
I still plan on picking this up since I don't own any version right now and if I don't like the 4k I'll just watch the Blu Ray disc that comes with it. Thanks for your honest review though! Love your content!
I just finished watching it and yes, it's pretty dark and it took me about 15 minutes to get used to it, but I have to say I was very happy with the picture. Great detail and grain structure. It really looks like film. If this is now Mann's preferred brightness and color timing, who am I to argue? Outstanding transfer. Can't wait to watch it again soon.

Quick update, got my Heat 4k disc today, and to me its terrible. That dark filter look is really bad, ive never seen a 4k disc with HDR look this dark and dull with horrible contrast. Im going to see if i can return this to amazon. The bluray definitely has to look better than this, what were they thinking? Edit: the stream on apple tv is what looked worse which i tested first (digital copy from disc). The 4k disc is much better overall, but still is somewhat darker than your typical hdr 4k disc, but the disc with extra sharp image helps offset that. And since most people watch movies in a dark room setting, that helps offset that alot too. Still somewhat dissappointed in the hdr on this ofcourse…
I picked up that same definitive blu ray version about a year ago at my local Best Buy, it was about 5 to 8 dollars if i remember correctly but it didn't come with the slip cover. Nonetheless it's the same version. I noticed at the time how great the image looked but i was more impressed with the audio. The quiet moments were audible yet super clear while the loud action moments were perfectly boomy, punchy and in-your-face sounding. Based on what i heard and watched from the blu ray, i had a feeling the 4K disc wasn't going to have much of an upgrade and unfortunately i might have been correct. That's why i hold off on just impulse buying most 4K disks and only pick up or preorder the ones i really want. The only ones i want to pick up soon are the Godfather part 1 and 2 steelbooks and the Return of the Living Dead.
This is one of my most highly anticipated releases, fantastic movie on a fantastic format. Thank you for this review I really appreciate it, it's a real shame hearing that they manipulated the picture with this release, I've owned it on various formats and still want the 4K version because of the higher resolution.
I owned 3 copies of "Heat" (1995)! Two DVDs (Single Barebones and a Two Disc Special Edition) and a 2017 Blu-ray (Definitive Director's Teal Edition). Judging by the 4K release, it's just the same 4K scan teal filter as before and a little darker. Still edited down to 170 minutes out of 2 minutes from the original theatrical release, sound mix with tinny dialogue and long blasting shootouts and explosions. Maybe down the road when the price drops, I might get it. As of now, I'm fine with my previous copies.
@@thischannelisdeleted Yes, since 2009 when Warner Bros. released their first Blu-ray release. And the last version uncut was the Two-Disc Special Edition released in 2005.
I did Buy the 4k 3 disc steel book edition of HEAT. It is my faviroute movie and I like so many others have waited so very long for it to be released on 4k. I have the 2017 Bluray edition copy. I agree that the 4K is very dark. But personally it did not upset, bother, or distract me from the enjoyment of watching the movie. However I can completely understand if many other fans of the movie were left disappointed in the 4K transfer. The overall improvement to the film the 4K makes upon the Bluray is certainly an upscale in many areas. The movie is 100% awesome. Is the 4k an essential must buy for the collection: The answer is: No. The Bluray is more than fine.
The Kaliedescape file runs at 90.6 GB. With that big of a jump from the 66GB disc that Disney put out I'm wondering if there will be a 3 way comparison between the 3 formats. At the current time they have it on sale for $14.99.
Heat is one of my all time top 20 movies. Watched the 4K last night and wow, underwhelming to say the least. Very disappointed in the PQ. The Blu Ray from a few years ago easily bests this release. 3.5/5
Canceled my pre-order. Good video as always. Thanks Jeff. Confirmed 2017 blu ray is only $7 on Amazon brand new. Used the link in the description thanks.
Such a great review- anybody who says Jeff is a shill for the studios is full of it. Thanks for helping me not make a purchase as I can’t have them all.
Thanks Jeff. This is why I have been subscribed to this channel for years. Pre-ordered the 4K Steelbook to upgrade my 2017 Definitive Blu-ray and now I know I can just sell the steelbook on eBay now.
To be fair received my steelbook this morning and it actually has 3 discs .The 4k and 2 x blu ray. The 2nd blu ray has all the bonus features on it so it's softened the blow somewhat .
@@fokionbogris Entertainment Weekly’s interview with Michael Mann: “When it came to remastering the film for the Blu-ray, were there specific sequences you focused on? Yeah, the whole film! When you go into Blu-Ray, and you go to 4K, you’re in a different color space. Meaning that what was magenta doesn’t translate exactly. There’s no logarithm you could use to make “magenta” still stay magenta, with that exact color. So you have to imagine everything, from contrast, to how black blacks are, to what the color palette is. The ambition here was: If I was shooting the film two or three years ago, what would it look like? That was really it. So we went into every shot.”
@@Gurminder_S If a person knew nothing about computers or film remastering, that idiotic comment would actually make sense. I have seen 4Ks that look identical to the original film prints and negatives, and these were all done before logarithms ever existed. 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Ten Commandments, and Singin’ In The Rain are but a few of the rather large pool. And none of them look like they were shot 3 years ago, they look like restored versions of the original films as they were decades ago. Talking stupid to smart people doesn’t work, it just lets us know that the speaker doesn’t respect us.
I feel like 4K only exists because we want it to. HDR really doesn't need to exist. Film is the truest representative of a recording and none of these specifications exist in that world.
Thank you for the review. I'm curious, I watch my movies on a mini projector and I've never liked the look of blurays or UHD blurays on a TV. My question is do you have any friends that use projectors and what do they think of this darker image on a projection screen. I by no means have an optimal set up at home and need to upgrade to a better projector, but I would like to know that you and your friends think of this transfer projected.
BTW - thanks for talking about the BD-100 discs. That explains the issues I've had in the past with Halloween and Hobbit. My player is Sony BDP-x700. Disc will lock up and I just eject it, close tray and reload , then works fine.
Most reviews are saying similar. It's disappointing but I don't have Heat on any format, only saw it on VHS back in the 90s...ya I'm old so I'll pick this up, didnt realise it was a friggin Disney disk.
Will wait a few months to see if price drops and then buy it for the blu ray. We were warned what DIsney policy over discs was like eg Pirates of the Caribbean !
Thanks for the review; preordered the steelcase from Best Buy awhile ago. Now I am relieved that it includes the blu-ray version in addition to the new 4K disc. Love this movie; anxious to watch the new 4K HDR and see how often I just go back to 4K 1080. Its kind of a shame there's no way to turn off HDR on discs; a lot of computer monitors (even the nicer ones) don't even support it; thoughts?
Make sure 4K BR player has Dolby Vision “off”. This disk is HDR10. Once I turned off DV, disc doesn’t look overly dark. Dark “filter” look gone after that.
This is a big letdown after waiting so long for it to be released and then have it be worse than the Blu-ray. That’s too bad what a great movie with a good cinematic quality and HDR is just thrown on.
@@JeffRauseo I will say this though, it’s intentionally blue and gray *now*. It wasn’t always like that. For proof, track down a bootleg recording from theaters. While it will look terrible, you’ll see that it wasn’t always blue and gray, it used to look (at least in terms of color) like the WB Blu-ray.
I had a feeling this movie would get a dud disc from Disney. So glad you continue to do these unbiased reviews. Thanks dog. Good luck with the coming life changes and the mountain of work ahead.
I found the 4K disc quite dark like most folks. Fine in a dark room, but just not taking a real advantage of the OLED. Having said that, I turned on Dynamic Contrast on the TV and it does play much better for me. ie BRIGHTER. So if you're looking for a temp solution, check your TV (under expert controls on LG TVs) and you can pick from 1 of 3 settings... Will turn it off for other movies, but for 3 hours of HEAT, even just a little helps.
Interesting one this Jeff. I think this will be a future purchase in a 2 For £25 offer at HMV (UK). It may be one of those titles that requires a very dark room and a very bright panel. One I will have to see for myself. Always respect your opinion though.
Hey Jeff I just wanted to say that I appreciate your honesty and integrity regarding how you evaluate a new disk it’s too bad your contemporaries won’t don’t do the same because of worry about free stuff and being politically offensive. Keep up the good work !
Just bought it on AMA for $7.99. I like the fact that you break out the audio from the video. I replace my movies based on the ATMOS as much as the P.Q.
Sadly I expected this to be underwhelming from the start & it's a shame because I love this film but I doubt I'll bother with the 4k until maybe when it's in an offer.
Thanks. I looked up the 2017 Director’s Definitive Blu-ray and Best Buy has it for 5.99. I had a 5 dollar rewards credit there so 99 cents for me. Boom. Better picture for sure than the 4K.
For me, a bright day outside as intended to look should not look like a grey, overcast day on HDR. It's not my TV. I want to watch the movie as the movie maker intended it to look, and I don't want to change my TV settings to Vivid, or similar.
Answer this for the record: 1. Is the 4K how it originally looked? 2. What’s more faithful in terms of color timing, the 2009 Blu-ray, the 2017 Blu-ray, or the 2022 4K?
Thanks, as always, for the detailed review! Think I am going to take the plunge on the upgrade anyway. Heat is on my 'top 20' list and I will be going from the 2007 Blu-ray, not the ultimate/re-release.
I just watched the Definitive Edition Blu-ray, it needs a pitch black room or increased brightness TV setting to get an acceptable image. I also agreed with your blue/grey assessment. The 4K UHD needs a new transfer, the old transfer is compromised.
Some of the "too dark" HDR complaints will start to go away when we all have monitors that can replicate the higher range 4,000 (and in some cases even 10,000) nit levels that the HDR grading is done at (although I do see that this disc was mastered at 1,000 nits). It's the dance that the content creators are having to play with the hardware creators right now.
For a good display nowadays the actual darker parts of an HDR image will be produced accurately considering correct settings and relatively accurate color temperature which higher end TVs get better and better at. OLEDs for example from LG and Sony are accurate until about 70% brightness in 1000nits mastered content (or even higher for the big expensive flagship models), at which point it starts to roll off. It is the bright highlights and very high APL scenes like the white void from the matrix where the limitations of OLED is mostly seen. The more fundamental problem is however that HDR is specifically graded for a completely dark room. Because the EOTF curve has values that correspond to specific number of nits unlike SDR it means that you really cant make the image brighter on the low and mid end without becoming inaccurate. There are some technologies like dolby vision IQ which are trying to rectify this by raising EOTF in the most accurate way possible according to light conditions, and to me seems the way forward unless the mastering standard is changed somehow to combat this. To note though HDR is a relatively new standard in comparison to the tride and true SDR so issues like this are bound to happen as the kinks are ironed out. In 10 to 15 years id imagine things will be alot more consistent and refined.
Doh. One of my favorite movies behind BLADERUNNER. I will have to pick it up and see for myself. I'm hoping the 4k looks better on a 110" 4k projection. I'll let you know.
Dang! I was really hoping for this to be amazing. I'm still going to get it, since i dont have it in physical, but im sad it didnt get better praise from you. Question: do you have an OLED? I have a lg c1, so maybe colors might be different? 🤞🤞
It looks like all they did was turn the brightness down and called it a day. From the screenshots it doesnt look like much changed between blu ray and 4k other than the brightness
I am curious has your TV been calibrated? I work in a post facility and we had two online bays that had identical TVs. I believe they were LGs and they were advertised as being "ready out of the box". They hired someone come in to calibrate them and the from the baseline test both TVs were significantly different. I've thought about having my TVs at home calibrated but I find that I have to adjust the settings on just about every movie. I also thought about painting the walls 18% gray like the online bays at the office but I don't think that would make that big of a difference. It seems like Blu-Rays are more consistent across the board than 4K disk, 4k discs are hit or miss for me. I find it odd that this did not get a bad review for being too dark but memories of murder did and they have the same problem. Let me know what you think!
@@rkan2 No, it wouldn't be "anything anywhere" it cost thousands of dollars to remaster of a movie, so the screening conditions are tightly controlled.
Bummed to hear the news! This was one of my most anticipated releases this year. The steelbook was beautiful, but alas. Color is huge for me so I’ll probably opt for the blu ray
Lol, that will be 4 versions of Heat on blu-ray, if I buy this one. I've got the original vanilla release region B in a nice metallic slip cover, then both region A and B definitive versions as they both had different slip covers. Might as well go for 4 with the 4K in another different slip cover. I think I have a problem!
At this point, I’ll pick up copies on the cheap for the special features, and either buy or create a bootleg for the actual movie. Every disc that currently exists sucks for different reasons.
Yeah, I prefer to stick with my blu ray version. When I watch star wars on Disney+ I'm not very appreciated with the 4k version. My question for you is why some blu ray looks alot much more clear then the 4k. And why some 4k version looks even more too dark?
“Clearer”, that’s actually artificial sharpness on the Blu-ray, and while the 4Ks are usually softer, that’s what’s actually on the negative, the intermediate elements, and the theatrical prints. “Dark”, sometimes that’s because it’s how the original prints looked (2001: A Space Odyssey), but other times it’s because the director decided 20+ years later that he wants it to look different (Heat). Do your research on each title, because there’s no one-size-fits-all answer for either of your questions.
@@indieke As for HDR/DV, unless it’s being used in a way to present the film exactly as it was in theaters, I don’t honestly see the point of it. I’m not some gung ho “4K SDR!” freak, but it doesn’t make my day when it’s there and it doesn’t break my heart when it’s absent.
Compression on new 4K is reason enough to upgrade. 2017 1080p release was plagued with Compression artifacts so not only does this release have better color, better resolved grain, better definition AND better Compression, its 100 percent reason to upgrade if you are a real cinema aficionado and love this movie. Exactly, I’m glad someone said this. The movie is supposed to be have this look and the disc does a great job a delivering it faithfully. Michael Mann supervised this transfer
@@samreid9106 George Lucas supervised the Blu-rays and 4Ks of Star Wars too. James Cameron supervised the 4K of Terminator 2 as well. The director supervising the film means nothing if the disc comes out horrible.
I would go as far as stating that my favourite edition is the 2001 DVD that has the theatrical version and the colours as I remembered watching it at the cinema. I don't need to go any further than the 2009 Blu ray, despite having lines cut. The new Mann mandated color timing since 2017 just doesn't work for me, let alone this new 4k. From I've seen its just dreadfully looking.
Someone needs to just bootleg the theatrical version and drop it on disc. Ideally a 4K scan of a print, then put on a triple-decker with SDR and the LD 5.1 track and we’ll be set.
Is this worth a blind buy? Never seen Heat but I think I'll love it. Been eyeing this new 4K release since it comes with a bluray and since I probably won't be bothered with a darker color grade.
If u want to buy the movie I recommend watching the 2017 Director's Definitive Edition which is only on blu ray that u can find on this 4k release set or the 2017 blu ray set. I saw the movie for the first time on that version and it's beautiful and makes it look like it came out in 2005 or 2006
Man any time I see a Disney branded 4k disc I always wonder what could have been if they never acquired 20th century. All the reasons I upgrade to 4k just aren't there.
I even prefer the earlier Warner Bros. blu ray release over the 2017 Fox remaster. I thought the coloring was a bit warmer and had a little better filmic look to my eye than the more revisionist Fox release. I do like all the supplemental stuff added with the Fox disc, but that's about it. Ideally for me, a 4K remaster that stuck to the WB aesthetic on a more robust 100gb disc with the extras of the Fox reissue and maybe even an HD remaster of 'L.A. Takedown' included on the blu ray copy would be released. That would be ideal.
I'd even do as far to say the WB version is likely much closer to the theatrical release as evidenced by the fact that so much of Heat went on to inform the look of Nolan's The Dark Knight and watching the WB release of Heat after watching The Dark Knight reveals the color timing of those two presentations to be nearly identical.
What I think is the Blu-ray and 4K of Heat need to be redone from scratch. All cuts need to be included (rough cut, theatrical cut with OG color timing, WB Blu-ray cut, Fox Blu-ray cut, Disney 4K cut), plus all the special features (there’s tons of them), plus LA Takedown. I want to believe some label that gives a damn will get a hold of it, but I’m not sure.
I sense some dodgy "de-aging" will happen if they make the sequel movie. Plus they need to have Xnader Berkeley make a cameo. Then he is in all three movies. ;)
That’s too bad, I was really looking forward to getting one of my all-time favs on 4K. After this review, maybe if I wait for a sale. Way to drop the ball Disney.

Disappointing as I’ve been looking forward to the 4K coming out for a year after the first delay. Heats a film where you need the best possible transfer for the dark scenes. Loved Jeff’s comment about it being like an Instagram Filter. Fed up with studios releasing classics that are aren’t the best quality. The Boutiques do it a lot better now given the chance - DV, better extras etc
@@sparco1979 yea just checked itunes, unfortunately just HDR too for digital. Atleast its far cheaper at 15 bucks for now. I did get Platoon on itunes recently and that has DV, unlike the disc coming out in a month that is only HDR…
I had the 2 disk DVD....ughhh
Wait a second… is every new version missing those 2 minutes?? Which was the last home video release to have it uncut???
@@thischannelisdeleted Yes, since 2009 when Warner Bros. released their first Blu-ray release. And the last version uncut was the Two-Disc Special Edition released in 2005.
If the 4k disc was made by Warner Brothers it would have be a better
That’s a pretty low bar for both of them. Saying WB would do a better job than Disney is like saying one broken kneecap is better than two.
Just don't forget to buy Kaledoscope player for 10000$😁
Good for you. Now, we not rich people will have to do with these discs. Also, if I was rich the bloody thing isn't available in my country anyway.
Nice and all but in the end it's the same master file that has been used.
The Fox Blu-Ray of Heat is on Amazon for really cheap right now.
To be fair received my steelbook this morning and it actually has 3 discs .The 4k and 2 x blu ray. The 2nd blu ray has all the bonus features on it so it's softened the blow somewhat .
Its a shame they messed up with this release. If there was ONE film I was dying to see on 4K, that was HEAT.
Who messed up? If you’re such a big fan then you’d respect Mann’s creative choices for the 4k.
@@Gurminder_S hahaha that doesn't make sense, sorry.
@@fokionbogris Entertainment Weekly’s interview with Michael Mann:
“When it came to remastering the film for the Blu-ray, were there specific sequences you focused on?
Are the blur-ays in this 4k the same from the 2017 release or is it a different transfer/coloring based on the new hdr?
Thanks for the info. Will keep my Blu Ray for now. Will wait for holiday sales if goes cheap.
Durring big sales, the Blu can go down to like $4. Compared to the $25+ fee on this one that better be a big improvement.
Both discs will be awesome 👏
Definitely buying this classic Masterpiece on 4k Ultra HD next week 👍
I'm buying my 4K copy asap . I have the blu ray copy too.
Thanks for the review. I picked up the Blu Ray. Can't beat that price.
Still my favorite movie of all time, ever since I first watched it in 2000. Nothing else is better for me. Thanks for the review!
I change my mind, movie is crisp! Recently just picked it up, looks incredible
Only fresh 4k scans can really make a movie jump.
Fresh 4K scans that haven’t been fucked with, like this one has.
Thanks for posting this video-canceled my pre-order and am keeping my Heat Blu-Ray. Are you excited for Heat 2?
Thank F**k I didn't upgrade from the netflix version, your reviews are saving me alot of money
Just canceled my 4k pre-order after seeing the screenshots and ordered the blu-ray from your link. Thanks for the review Jeff!
Make sure 4K BR player has Dolby Vision “off”. This disk is HDR10. Once I turned off DV, disc doesn’t look overly dark. Dark “filter” look gone after that.
hhansk for this review! I will be getting the BD since it is only $5.99
This is a big letdown after waiting so long for it to be released and then have it be worse than the Blu-ray. That’s too bad what a great movie with a good cinematic quality and HDR is just thrown on.
Watching the 4K now on the Sony Bravia. Looks fantastic. Not sure what the issue is. Amazing
Uncalibrated display I’m guessing or watching it in bright day light.
@@Gurminder_S It's actually better to watch in darkness. Looked fantastic anyway. Sony Bravia wins again and PS5
Thnx for the review-I’m canceling my preorder and sticking with my disc from 2017. If I decide I want to pick it up on 4k, I’ll wait for a sale
It is inexcusable that a Michael Mann movie should look anything less than spectacular.
This movie is intentionally blue and gray though. It’s just turned up on 4K and made darker which doesn’t help it’s cause
I canceled my pre order and ordered the blu ray saved me $20 thanks Jeff. I only had a DVD before I paid $1 for at a flea market.
As I said when it was announced two years or so ago, a redundant purchase after the 2017 Mann-supervised re-issue.
Interesting one this Jeff.
I think this will be a future purchase in a 2 For £25 offer at HMV (UK).
It may be one of those titles that requires a very dark room and a very bright panel.
One I will have to see for myself.
Always respect your opinion though.
Thanks for this I'm gonna hang on to my Blu Ray copy
ohh wow - got my steelbook on pre-order was hoping it would look great
Hey Jeff I just wanted to say that I appreciate your honesty and integrity regarding how you evaluate a new disk it’s too bad your contemporaries won’t don’t do the same because of worry about free stuff and being politically offensive. Keep up the good work !
Thanks Jeff just ordered it from Prime, the definitive 2017 Blu-ray. $5.99
Wow ,I agree 100% with You - 4k is not a real upgrade - will stick with my BluRay
Thanks for that review! I canceled my preorder because I have the 20th Century Fox Blu-Ray. It’s a shame Disney doesn’t take physical media seriously.
The way he intended in 1995 or the way he intended in 2017?
I remember the opening show at Lowes in New York in 1995. A phenomenal experience.
Answer this for the record:
Too bad Warner Bros lost the rights to the movie. I feel like they would have released it better in 4k
might get the uk version for here in Australia and love the blu ray version
A shit transfer with shit color grading and shit HDR will look like shit on any monitor with any range and any nit levels. You can’t polish a turd.
Thanks for the info and review saved me buying 4k of this Cheers 😎👍
I mean you could watch it on a projector - HDR or SDR TV whatever. Who knows what Mann graded it on... It could be anything anywhere.
@@rkan2 No, it wouldn't be "anything anywhere" it cost thousands of dollars to remaster of a movie, so the screening conditions are tightly controlled.
We’ve been waiting 3-4 years for this to come to 4K??? Uh… technically we’ve been waiting 27 years
Since I only own the DVD, I will upgrade. Thanks for the info.
Would the hdr optimizer settings on the Panasonic UB820 help the darkness?
Maybe. But then again, the Blu-ray would just do it for you natively.
I have the same player. Tried it?
Bummed to hear the news! This was one of my most anticipated releases this year. The steelbook was beautiful, but alas. Color is huge for me so I’ll probably opt for the blu ray
Lol, that will be 4 versions of Heat on blu-ray, if I buy this one. I've got the original vanilla release region B in a nice metallic slip cover, then both region A and B definitive versions as they both had different slip covers. Might as well go for 4 with the 4K in another different slip cover. I think I have a problem!
Im in the same boat, steelbook makes 3 for me.lol Its one of my top ten faves ,so fk it.
At this point, I’ll pick up copies on the cheap for the special features, and either buy or create a bootleg for the actual movie. Every disc that currently exists sucks for different reasons.
Do you think using Panasonic’s hdr optimizer will help?
On a disc like this, probably not.
I actually seen reviews saying it looks great, guess I'll have to check it out soon
Yeah, I prefer to stick with my blu ray version. When I watch star wars on Disney+ I'm not very appreciated with the 4k version. My question for you is why some blu ray looks alot much more clear then the 4k. And why some 4k version looks even more too dark?
is just a system, that nobody can get right at home. They should have put 4K out with SDR and everybody would have been happy.
They kept the monochromatic look.i think we were expecting something like Man Hunter ,which I think is coming on uhd.
Great review Jeff…. I was also reading on Digital Bits that Mann oversaw and steered the picture changes…..
I got the Heat Blu-Ray at Best Buy like last month for $5.00it is pretty common at most Best Buy’s still.
Compression on new 4K is reason enough to upgrade. 2017 1080p release was plagued with Compression artifacts so not only does this release have better color, better resolved grain, better definition AND better Compression, its 100 percent reason to upgrade if you are a real cinema aficionado and love this movie. Heat fans and home cinema fans, please buy with confidence
I still think of Heat as a Warner Bros. Movie. I know Heat was a Regency pictures movie and they were on the Fox lot before the Disney purchase.
Question, who owns Once Upon A Time In America and Natural Born Killers now? WB, or Disney?
Is this worth a blind buy? Never seen Heat but I think I'll love it. Been eyeing this new 4K release since it comes with a bluray and since I probably won't be bothered with a darker color grade.
If u want to buy the movie I recommend watching the 2017 Director's Definitive Edition which is only on blu ray that u can find on this 4k release set or the 2017 blu ray set. I saw the movie for the first time on that version and it's beautiful and makes it look like it came out in 2005 or 2006
@filmsathome Jeff where can I get that shirt might be my new favorite shirt I’ve ever seen
Compare 2017 blu-ray to the older circa 2010 blu-ray?
Man any time I see a Disney branded 4k disc I always wonder what could have been if they never acquired 20th century. All the reasons I upgrade to 4k just aren't there.
Why won’t Disney put movies over 90 minutes on a bd-100! Thanks Films at Home! I’ll stick with my 2017 BD!
To be fair I think that LA Takedown should be a bonus feature for the UHD/ Bluray version of Heat.
Good timing, since the Heat 2 novel is coming out in the next week, and Michael Mann said there would be a movie also.
Appreciate the honest review that is why I come to Films at home..
