The most bone chilling part in this to me is at 6:22 where the three chords that play over the sustained trumpet note are pain, then sorrow, and finally wrath. Then the calm chaos afterwards is what’s left after wrath has struck. Absolutely stunning
playing this right now in my high school’s wind ensemble, we had the utmost pleasure of having viet work with us. such a nice and knowledgeable guy, i love this piece so much. it’s so much fun whilst quite challenging!
I hope our ensemble lets us choose what we play so I can have an excuse to suggest this 😂 I mean this song got me imagining whole scenarios for different parts of it. That's how good it is!
Just got to play this with a huge, intercollegiate band at the CBDNA conference at UNR. Not only is it a truly amazing piece to hear and play, but it's a beacon of hope for contemporary band music when so much of it is overly new age and hard to listen to. Keep writing for band, Mr. Cuong.
