      Yes, easy to condemn Argentine Forces, but most were young conscripts caught up in a conflict they didn't want. They took the full brunt of U.K. Forces, while their leaders and Galtieri and his crew ranted about them being the glorious liberators.

    what is quite interesting is how calm,measured and thoughtful many of the videos (of documentaries filmed in the mid 1980's) here on youtube are.It's a very old fashioned and sadly missed way recent history was presented back then.Nowadays of course there would be over dramatic soundtrack, the camera would focus in on any soldier showing any sign of grief & there would be loads of people not even remotedly clued up on the finer details of the operation giving their so-called insight on events.

    The Argentines treated so kindly and fairly by the Brits. Juxtaposed by the barbarism and rape that the Argentines visited upon the rightful owners of the Falklands.
    Argentina was defeated by a much smaller force, routed, humiliated, and then shown kindness they would never show if they had been the victors.

    Regarding the ‘mad fool’ nonsense written about Col ‘H’ Jones, 2 Para, deal with the evidence rather than commenting based on conjecture.
    1. ‘ H’ Jones had been an instructor at Warminster Battle school and so one must ask, why would he go against the doctrinal teachings he espoused? He has been criticised for being to restrictive in his command. He was merely conducting the battle in the way he knew and had taught others to do. The British Army’ smallest fighting unit the section (8 men) fight with 2 fire teams, each with their own machine gun. This was ‘H’s innovation equipping 2 Para with extra machine guns prior to the conflict, indicating that he had visionary awareness of the needs of had to fight a battle.
    2. The attack on Goose Green started as a silent then noisy night attack. Night attacks are notoriously difficult to coordinate and control. One can end up with lots of friendly fire incidents. Hence the need for restrictive control. Something he has been criticised for in absentia.
    3. ‘H’was time restricted from the very start and 2 Para were required to fight a battle (14 km) covering 1 km per hour. Also the Battalion had very little time to plan and execute the operation. Added to this, the Battalion sacrificed heavy equipment for a fast approach and speed to fight the battle, with so little night to fight in.
    4. The BBC’s leaking of “a parachute Battalion being poised to attack Darwin and Goose Green” compromised the whole operation and took away the element of surprise from 2 Para.
    5. It is not clear that the Darwin Hill position was occupied (or expected to be so heavily reinforced). The information available to ‘H’on this wasn’t conclusive and so certainly A company were surprised to find the Darwin Hill position so heavily defended. This position was occupied once the battle started.
    6. At Darwin and Middle Hill both A and B Coy came under heavy sustained fire from fixed line machine guns and accurate sniper fire. The ground was very flat and offered very little to the paras in terms of covered approaches to take on the enemy. Once soldiers go to ground under fire, it is very difficult to get them up again and regain momentum. 2 Para were now attacking a position in broad daylight that they had wanted to have taken in darkness.
    7. Now the enemy could see who they were attacking it would be much easier to bring down accurate artillery fire on the stuck A and B companies of 2 Para once their position had been bracketed (artillery ranging in on the stationary troops). This is what began to happen and being in a static position meant taking needless casualties with no visible gains for 2 Para.
    8. The other fear was that it was not known how many troops were now garrisoned at Goose Green (especially as 2 Para had encountered unexpectedly heavy resistance on Darwin Hill). The fear for ‘H’ was that with his Battalion being unable to break through the position they were thus vulnerable to counterattack, which could have proved disastrous had ‘H’ sought to commit his reserve D company too early. He would have been left with no more cards to play and may have had to retreat off of the position. Also, he still had the main objective to take and was probably maintaining his reserve for that (in line with his 6 phased plan).
    9. It does not matter how well trained one is, the true test of soldiering capability is ones reaction under fire. No British Battalion had fought a high intensity conflict since the Korean War of the 50’s. Volunteer soldiers with wives, families and lives back home may not fully understand what it means to risk ones life for Queen, country, pay packet and mates until they are placed on the spot.
    10. ‘H’s charge around the spur appears to have happened after it seems he had exhausted all options in the 90 minutes he was with A company in the gorse gully. It cannot to ‘H’ have seemed that much of a problem that he thought it would merit the use of his reserve, hence his leading the attack by personal example. As a leader you do not ask people to do what you are not prepared to do yourself. Sandhurst Academy teaches “your men first always, you last always”.
    11. In my view, having looked at the evidence it seems that there were two co occurring flacking attacks on the Argentinian positions of which ‘H’ led the right flanking assault when he was shot and killed. Considering everything he did and the enormous pressure he and his Battalion were placed under, it was a VC well deserved both by ‘H’and the Battalion which set the tone of moral and physical domination that was the hallmark of the whole campaign.

      As an ex soldier myself he is the CO & should not have been on this attack. The soldiers are better trained day in & day out. He is needed to direct action from the top of his Regt pinnacle. He should not have led what was a platoon attack. He obviously felt he had to prove himself to his men but it was wrong decision. If a platoon attack has your CO there it compromises the men of that attack in trying to protect their popular CO. He should have known that & his 2nd in command should have told him no no no. Plain & simple.

  • @GUnitSeanAKAmong
    @GUnitSeanAKAmong 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @eltucanmamero Actually, there were British settlers on the Falklands before any Argentines ever set foot onto the islands. A garrison of Argentinians tried to claim the land from the British, but were peacefully expelled. The only legitimate claim is that the Spanish claimed the Falklands off the French, although the French were no longer on the islands. And even then it would be Spanish. Still a case of "it's close to us, it's ours".

    a question for all you experts out there in crazy youtube land: - IF the Falkland islands/ Malvinas were of such vital importance to the Argentines then WHY did they only land a bunch of conscripts there to defend the place rather than turn it into a military stronghold and fight to the very bitter end? Colonel Herbert Jones died on the battle of Goose Green it has been discovered he was killed by a conscript soldier Oscar Ledesma (18 year old at that time) using a mag riffle, last year Ledesma appeared in an argentinian tv program. Jones was the highest rank officer who died on malvinas war. Its surprise how an officer was defeated by a young boy with only 2 months of training.

      captain keith And tell us what britain actually won. Because Argentina didn't have to pay war compensation. The UN ruled that Argentina only tried to reclaim what belongs to them and therefore, it wasn't an act of invasion, it wasn't "An Ungentleman Act" as the fucking propagandistic british film depicted the war.
      The Argentinians, with A4B Skyhawk scrap from the Vietnam War managed to sink state of the art british ships such as the Coventry, Sheffield, Sir Galahand, Antelope, etc etc, plus the embarrassing hit on the Invencible carrier that the british have so long tried to hide from the public.
      So, enlighten us and tell us what britain actually won from that war.
      Keith, if you are really an army captain, you want to hide that title. British army people are brainwashed into that they are the best of society, but we all know that army people are thick skulled cunts who can't find a job and so they join the army to seek shelter. Once they have been through the army, they become pitiful people, homeless and alkies, because they are just that: thick-skulled wankers without critical thinking and good judgement to cope with daily life

    @eltucanmamero Yes, 200 years or so ago. This is the 21st century, the people living there see themselves as British. Don't you think it for the people of the Falklands to decide, not Argentina or Britain. If Argentina retake the Falklands, they would be doing what the British did centuries ago, the difference being that invading countries is no longer acceptable. Argentina had their chance in 1947 to contest the claim in the Hague but turned it down.

      Don't you know you fucking turd that Argentina didn't have to pay war compensation. The UN ruled that Argentina only tried to reclaim what belongs to them and therefore, it wasn't an act of invasion, it wasn't "An Ungentleman Act" as the fucking propagandistic british film depicted the war.
      Argentina lost an old vessel veteran of the WWII, namely the Gral. Belgrano formerly the US Valiant. Whereas, Argentina sunk state-of-the-art frigates such as the Sheffield, the Antelope, the Atlantic Conveyor, etc.
      In terms of aircrafts, Argentina lost old Douglas A4 veterans of the Vietnam War and old Argentine made Pucara propellers. The modern Superetendard Exocet carriers were never hit by the Sea-Harriers.
      To sum up: Argentina didn't pay war compensation and lost scrap war material. However, the british lost modern material.
      So, tell me you fucking stupid thick-skulled cunt how was it that Argentina got humiliated and -if you brains allows it- do some basic book-keeping and work out who spent more on that war.
      And tell me you fucking arsehole, tell me exactly what britain won?? Do you go to war just for the sake of winning battles? That's what that evil cow M. Thatcher did to you all. She sent you to war just to win a battle and political gain for herself, but not gain for britain

      @tugmckiltoff1564 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. The battle was more complex than suggested in news reports and headlines. The main reason was that low cloud over Darwin and Goose Green prevented Harriers based on Hermes from softening up the Argentinian forward positions in Darwin, ahead of 2 Paras advance on Goose Green. This meant they had to carry out this task themselves while trying to avoid civilian casualties. Eventually the low cloud lifted and 2 Harriers were able to attack Argentinian artillery and anti aircraft positions on the Goose Green peninsula. PS Interesting that the Argentinian commander when it was over refused to believe his garrison of 1200 troops were defeated by the 500 of 2 Para.
