I feel so old watching this! I remember playing this for hours. It's fascinating to see how far games have come. I'm lucky to have witnessed the transition from old to new. This game was a gateway for me and a lot of PC gamers.
There's this game from 2018 called Overload on STEAM which is a modern remake of Descent. It's funny, I played it and it brought me right back to these old games. It plays exactly how I remember Descent 1 playing and looking, but of course looking back the original looked like garbage lol.
I used to play this back in the late 90s over my 28.8k modem and then my blazing fast 56k modem and it used to amp me up so much when playing people online because I never wanted to lose. Talk about some sweaty palms during those matches! I remember I used to be ranked pretty well at one point, I believe I cracked the top ten, but this was also probably from like 500 users back then haha. I loved using the three axis trick to speed up movements when others weren't aware of it yet. God that seems like a lifetime ago...now after everything you have to get done in life you have an hour or two to relax every day and that goes by quickly too. Kids, when your parents say enjoy your time being a kid, listen to them.
This is the game that initially pulled me into online multiplayer. Though in those days, we needed to make virtual lan's over the internet since local IPX protocol is all the game supported at the time (using KALI). I made demigod so many times I lost count, but that's not saying much back then. This was also the game that taught me how to play optimized. If you could "crab" by moving forward and in one other direction at the same time, you were 41% faster. If you could crab in all three dimensions while flying, you could move almost 200%. Combine that with knowledge that you can dodge an earthshaker (Head at it at a 45 and spiral in as they try and home until you outslew them) and it made new players pretty unhappy. Thanks for posting this. :)
I used Kali as well in the late 90s, it was amazing for its time since it allowed us to play people across the world! I am like 99% sure I sent cash in the mail to get my license when I was like 15 years old 😁. It worked! I still have my registration information since it looks like back in 2001 I requested it again and they sent me the information via email to my Hotmail account of course (yep, I'm that old 😂).
Nice! Was it the shutter glasses that used the serial port? I still have mine downstairs here somewhere. I couldn't play with them for any length of time without barfing, but my god was that cool for the 90's.
I’m playing this through again 30 years after the first time. It’s what I think games ought to be about, a contest of skill, with no protracted cutscenes (Metro Exodus), no laborious arguments (Deus Ex). Great!
First 3d shooter, where not only u truly moved in 3 dimensions, but also first one where strafing was a mandatory thing to learn if you wanted to survive to the end (Let's face it, up until then most ppl used arrows to turn around)
I miss this game. I wish they would make another one but keep it in line with Descent 2 type gameplay, dont try and "modernize" it like every other damn shooter did. Unfortunately the full 3D aspect limits its popularity. Every 3D space game ive found limited your control to avoid confusion. Hell this game ive played completely sideways in some levels and never noticed because i got used to it lol.
I Used to play this game when i was 3-5 years old, it was on my first computer, and also my first computer game. I miss it alot and when i look back at it now, the graphics are shitty, but perfect as a game that was released 21 years ago (as of today) The nostalgia that i get from watching you play this i real.
Oh my. Check this out, a descent reboot: www.kickstarter.com/projects/descendentstudios/descent-underground/description As a passionate fan, I am thrilled!
Enemies are a lot harder to deal with in the second one. It seems like the gameplay is a bit faster and more frantic. They really did improve the original quite a bit. This whole series is classic. Play it up because there's nothing else on the market like it. I mean there are games that TRY to recapture it, but until Underground comes out, the 3 of these games still hold up and are the gold standard by which all of your rogue-lite versions are to be judged by.
Descent2 should be a complete version on CD Rom. To play this game sensitive enough, only controlled by joy stick. The textures and its only colors can extend the limits. A little too marcant, please try to keep larger rooms with sliding bots, that can shoot diversely loads of energy blasts. May be more scillier, what can change this feeling totally. I am waiting for similar versions whit the answer to be Bild out by more bots and in the ending of epic finals.
I'm sorry that I don't remember that exact release date of a game made 17 years ago, I will try to memorize all games from the 90's in the future. I hope you can sleep better now when we sorted this huge mess out.
Hehe yeah in coop mode this game is a lot of fun although I found the lack of a friendly fire option disturbing but I don't know if that is part f the version I played or if it always has been like that in Descent ^^
I have the original and the music is audio cd midi not even let you choose but the soundtrack cd equally good gameplay is better hear you are doing well
Oh I'm sorry, I will try to memorize every 90's game's release date I ever played next time... I hope you can sleep now when we sorted this huge mess out...
hi i just got this game i need to know how to install it on a p233mhz machine 32mb ram i have a voodoo 2 i cant seem to get it to work could u do a video on how to install it and files i need to run it thanks in doss 6.22
I have no idea what would be wrong on your end but I did not run this on an old computer or in DOS, I used a sourceport called DXX Rebirth. It can be found here www.dxx-rebirth.com/ Makes it way easier to get it to work and also you can use higher resolutions.
Vol Smik You are talking about the red doors right? ^^ I'm not a Dota 2 player so I wouldn't notice it but I just looked it up and yeah there is a certain similarity. :)
Nothing happened, it's the default midi soundtrack. There is also a somewhat different and higher quality CD soundtrack but I was playing the demo version so no CD music here. And no intro video either.
I guess you could but it would probably be better to use this: www.dxx-rebirth.com/ It is what I used in this video, its basically a 3d renderer for Descent so you can play it in hardware mode and use higher resolutions.

i played this with my friend a lot back them.

That Thief bot was the biggest troll in gaming history
Yeah, I chase that little bugger until I get it. I've lost it so many times, but I find it or it finds me, and I chase it again.

Well said man.
I remember this game fondly!
It was one of my favorite games. I was hopelessly addicted to it.
Try No Man's Sky. A chill version of Descent. Call it Descent Anomaly.
@@VideoMusicManiacPlace Also try Overload, it's a modern remake of Descent
OMFG... I remember playing this game so much. How my monitor use to clunk click as it changed its resolution as the game started :/
I loved Descent so much!!! I remember it like a quite difficult game, but I loved the freedom of movements and those crazy multilevel mazes.
Miniature graphics of DOS times is so good, almost all games was like a Minecraft style, software rendering with a new 3D accelerator features

THIS GAME. This one introduced me to online multiplayer. Hours upon hours signed into Kali, playing when a 1 second ping was pretty good. :-)
i love this game.. used to play with a VRglasses and a toplevel joystick.. hours, many many hours..
woooah with vr!!
Nice! Was it the shutter glasses that used the serial port? I still have mine downstairs here somewhere. I couldn't play with them for any length of time without barfing, but my god was that cool for the 90's.
My childhood. I miss so much those old times...
Same here mate, i get teary seeing this amazing game and all the great times i had with it!
I’m playing this through again 30 years after the first time. It’s what I think games ought to be about, a contest of skill, with no protracted cutscenes (Metro Exodus), no laborious arguments (Deus Ex). Great!
I used to watch my brother play this game a lot.

Didn't notice until you found some pilots to rescue :)
They made another one this year. It's called Overload and it's from the original creators.
Aquanox will be released soon [ Unreal Engine 4 ]. Maybe somebody will recreate Descent for VR or PC with the same UE4
Aquanox Deep Descent

Bruh. The graphics have aged really well.
used to play this on LAN network in the office- great fun game
One of the best game of all time.
one of my favorite games. no up & down. left right forward backward.
This game was THE SHIT! I remember wanting to kill the guidebot whenever I got stuck and frustrated.
I knew it was a hit but I never thought it was this good!
0:07 That feeling when you know this music track more from Doom WADs than this game.
I loved this game back when I was in middle school, came with my PC an AST Advantage, win 95, 24MB ram, 2GB HDD and a 166mhz pentium!
Oh my is this ever bringing back memories!
I never let go of the little guide robot, which helps to find things. The fun for me was finding the keys and exit paths myself.
this game was way ahead of its time
BEST GAME EVER. One of the FIRST VR games...decades befote "quadcopters"!
Dual joysticks and no auto-leveling is where it's at! >:D
Both the redbook audio and MIDI soundtrack were awesome!
My best friend and I would pretend to be these crafts running away from the explosion out of the tunnel.. fun stuff haha
Parallax software, you beauty!
Aww Guide-Bot is so cute.
Motion sick at its extreme
holy motion sickness batman!
Played this soooo much in co-op with a friend maybe 20 years ago (had to actually carry my pc and old heay monitor to him first).
Best game ever!
Oh my. Check this out, a descent reboot: www.kickstarter.com/projects/descendentstudios/descent-underground/description

@@x1v160 7 years old post, well done smartass
Is there footage or recording with Descent's soundtrack that's based on the MS-DOS standard music and not the Windows MIDI version of the music?
I used to love this game on the Mac :)
Motion Sickness: The Game
Hehe yeah in coop mode this game is a lot of fun although I found the lack of a friendly fire option disturbing but I don't know if that is part f the version I played or if it always has been like that in Descent ^^

I have the original and the music is audio cd midi not even let you choose but the soundtrack cd equally good gameplay is better hear you are doing well
I saw an error and I corrected it. I did not insult you in any way. You have no cause to be offended.
i would always kill Thief bot first chance i had. Hated the idea of having him take my stuff
Oh I'm sorry, I will try to memorize every 90's game's release date I ever played next time... I hope you can sleep now when we sorted this huge mess out...
Don't try to play this game drunk. I couldn't distinguish up from down and didn't even start the game yet.

NostalgicGames :) exactly.
Oh I don't think I'm the one who's raging...bro... ;).
Good time
All Hail ZOD.
Remember.....
what happened to the sound track?
Nothing happened, it's the default midi soundtrack. There is also a somewhat different and higher quality CD soundtrack but I was playing the demo version so no CD music here. And no intro video either.
so what happened to the redbook soundtrack?
Like I said nothing happened, this is the demo so there is no CD/Redbook or whatever soundtrack, only the default midi you hear in the video.
20 years ago? Nice try...
looks like ADRENIX to me
Can i dosbox this game?
I guess you could but it would probably be better to use this: www.dxx-rebirth.com/

Gromitdog1 yes
