    I had a very similar experience in March, when our country went into lock down for 7 weeks. I crashed my car the day before the lock down started, and only the supermarkets and pharmacies were allowed to stay open, so no chance of getting a new car. The supermarket delivery was prioritizing the elderly or people with medical conditions so that was out. I could have taken the bus, but thought there were probably elderly people who couldn't walk that relied on them, and I wouldn't want to put them at risk.
    So I started walking to my local supermarket, which was 5km each way (a little over 3 miles). At first I was exhausted when I got home, but a few weeks into the lock down, I was loving my supermarket runs. Instead of walking beside the road the whole way I found new routes through the golf course and pony club.
    I also found that since I had to carry everything home on my back I never bought more than was absolutely necessary, so I saved a heap of money and my diet improved dramatically.
    Unfortunately though, it's back to business as usual, working 8 hours a day, and since it's winter down here there's not enough daylight to walk after work. I've slipped back into my habit of driving everywhere. I really miss lock down...

      Thanks for sharing your experience! You know, people night hike on the AT and some of those who do say a hand-held light is best. Overall, I'd have to rate Gerber Recon lights as my most effective outdoor lights because they will run 48 hours on AA battery and are practically indestructible. The bad news -- they QUIT selling them!! I hope you find chances to keep walking and thanks for being a great viewer!

    Well, thank you for hanging in there for us! Glad you're feeling better. Just will comment that I personally find sidewalks and paved trails painful on my feet pretty quick. I am kind of a big fella, over 230lbs in good shape so your mileage may vary.

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My left foot gave me trouble several years ago and my doctor suggested wearing shoes with the most rigid soles I could find. To add to that I started using Super Feet insoles, the green ones. Two major payoffs -- my foot cleared up and never before could I move over the AT's rocks with less discomfort. It's also thanks to those shoes and insolesd I can handle hard pavement. It would be different if I wore my everyday Walmart shoes. My hiking shoes are Brooks but no doubt other brands also have thick soles. Keep walking where you can and thanks a million for being a viewer!

    I always enjoy your commentary. I too am recovering. I try to walk 3 miles or more three times a week. I carry my backpack loaded. One reason I carry a trekking pole is to differentiate me from a homeless person. One time I was testing out my rain gear in a down pour and a car stopped and asked me if I need a lift. Your encouragement is always appreciated.

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see carrying the trekking pole so you don't look homeless as a good idea to tell you the truth. I've had the law stop when I was walking along a highway to ask me what the heck I was doing. I figure if I carry a trekking pole, it's at least more obvious I'm walking to get somewhere. Best wishes on your recovery and thanks for being a great viewer!

      Glad to hear I’m not alone! I also use a hiking stick whenever I go out for my daily day hikes here in metro-DC. It helps keep me from falling, thanks to lousy equilibrium after brain surgery several years ago. But it also helps me look “normal” when I walk. Otherwise, people assume I’m some old drunk guy who can’t walk straight...because I am old & I look drunk. :-) Hike on!

    Good to see you again. I logged a lot of miles around a local park during the shutdown weeks also. I never dreamed the AT would be closed! Be safe walking around town, hope to see you on the AT sometime.

    Are you from the Midland MI area where those dams broke? I'm from near the Detroit area and was watching that crazyness. Anyhow, good to hear from ya!

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in Ohio. A small creek overflowed its banks by about five vertical feet all over town, flooding some businesses and destroying cars. Almost funny, a large river running through town did not flood -- the two have different 'watersheds' -- areas that they drain. It was the town's worst flood since 1959. And thanks for being a viewer!

    GREAT TO SEE YOU BACK ON THE TUBE!!! As a 48 yo recovering alcoholic, I went to sign on with Facebook a week ago to help locate more outdoor mtgs and was suddenly drowning in faces of people i knew 3-9 years ago and 1 was from like 22 years ago. These are people I hadn’t talked to in as much time. It was too much. I work 48-54 hrs a week. We are living with our adult child with a mental disability. And I can’t get out and go backpacking because I don’t want to leave my wife alone with her for a long weekend. So our morale is low here too! My wife really wants to sail and I would like to try and make that possible for her somehow. Anyway, great to see you’re back flat broke!!

      I've lived in places I do not remember fondly. So I don't friend on Facebook everybody I used to know. Far from it. Sometimes I get a message that says "Are you the same (name here) who used to live in (name of town)" and I say nope, even though they were right. I wish you guys good luck and you get to go sailing. And thanks a million for watching!!

      2. If you where really gone. Your channel would end up deleting it self.

    Sciatica is terrible. I've been dealing with it for a few months. I could barely walk at the start.

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sciatica stinks, that's for sure. As I understand it, the pinched nerve can happen low in the back, or under a muscle in the back of the hip. Both times with me it was the latter, based on what my doctor said. What really helped this time was getting a heating pad and having it aganst the sorest spot at the hip, which is where the pinched nerve was. I used it every day. If you haven't seen a doctor yet, please do and ask if a heating pad would help. And thanks for watching!

      @@flatbrokeoutside6921 Unfortunately, I have a combination of a herniated l5/s1 disc and a tight piriformis muscle. It has been a rough go, but I'm finally walking and hiking well again.
      Now if I could just get back in my whitewater kayak...

    Have you been able to replace/ repair your car yet? Is your home okay? How are you and how is your health?

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did get a new car, yes. There was water right outside my front door and had it gotten 4 inches deeper it would have been inside. Needless to say, I carried everything valuable and not nailed down upstairs at 3 a.m. All my sciatica problems are behind me, knock on wood, and I'm still making the neighbood walks and moving quickly. Thanks for asking and thanks again for being a great viewer!

    Unsubscribing. You tube shut down comments on the White House channel but will not do the same to biden, political discrimination is wrong and I am preparing to leave you tube. I have enjoyed you videos and wish you well in the future
