  • Everyone sounds so happy, excited and determined before they start their AT hike. But wait a minute ... is the AT really fun?

    I actually find that being cold wet and miserable is fun... when you're back home again!

    I can sure relate to the feeling of almost levitating when I quit two miserable jobs and spent several months section hiking the AT. I was like Julie Andrews in the opening scene of the Sound of Music; you know, the helicopter shot of her singing in the alpine meadow with outstretched arms.

      The AT is a great place to go after two miserable jobs! Thanks again for being a great viewer!

    Man, it’s so good to hear you again. I retired from the army in 2006, had been planning to hike the AT for better than 5 years, had most of the equipment ready, had read some articles and books, (didn’t know about TH-cam then). As I was getting ramped up for the hike the wife says, “I know you’ve planed to do this for a while; but, you know that if you do we’ll lose a couple a billion dollars and the army retirement will leave me destitute for the six months that you’re gone. I also didn’t know that she already had me committed to a new job in Kentucky one day after I retired. Well, the army retirement wouldn’t cover the bills and a couple billion is a lot of money and she had me committed to the work. So... I will retire-retire in 4 years, after which I will do some walking. I so enjoy hearing your talks. Soon, I hope to be walking the walks.

    I woke up in the snow on the AT 2 weeks ago and hollered over to my 76 year old father in law and said "This still beats a good day at work!" He replied that he was retired. 😐

    Your videos are perfectly timed and are the breath that blow those morning coals back to flame. I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to grab my gear and immediately head to the trail. Thank you!

    Your lack of subscribers is a crime. At least you’re posting again. Here’s a comment for engagement. Been watching people do the vlogs for the first time and yeah, there’s some major misconceptions about how fun this hobby is. People really do drop out early on with no experience thinking the trip was going to be much more of a vacation. I’m glad I live near the AT, I just wish gear wasn’t so expensive.

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  ปีที่แล้ว

      You make very good points. I'm not sure I have an answer to expensive gear. I'd hate to have to replace everything at once with today's prices. And thanks again for being a great viewer!

    Last year I failed at an attempted thru-hike after only a few days. It was difficult and painful...but FUN. Looking forward to starting another flip-flop attempt in about three months. The sense of achievement is most important to me. Nice video!

    I did most of my hiking on the AT when I was in High school, back in the 1970s. Most of it was in the weekends. It was really neat for me to be there in spite of the hills. It didn't seem to bother me. Since I didn't have hardly any money, I had to make do with most of what I used. I used normal and heavy stuff. Yet it didn't seem to matter that I had the heaviest pack. I was able to keep up with the rest just fine. I'm sure it might be very different today.

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I was a teenager I don't remember the pack being heavy or the hills being steep. Lucky for me, gear is lighter these days. And thanks for watching!

    A most cogent commentary that should be required viewing/listening for all neophyte/wannabe backpackers. And I recognize that type of office, lol. My editors would never let me take more than a week off at a time.

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Things eventually got so bad one year I was afraid to take a vacation. Then they got worse - I got another job doing 60 hours a week with not a day off in 18 months. (And when I took that photo, my desk was cleaner than it had been in a month. haha) I'm always pleased to know you are watching - Thanks a million!

    • @RandomButtonPusher
      @RandomButtonPusher 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, even when I had worked up to city editor and got 3 weeks of vacation, never more than 1 at a time. Once, however, I got windbound on Isle Royale and they had to do without me for an extra day while I lolled in sunshine until Lake Superior calmed enough for the ferry make the trip. That felt really good -- but not as good as the Monday I woke up years later, having been fired the Friday before, and realized I didn't have to meet any deadlines.

    Welcome back. Thanks for another thoughtful video. Your videos and commentary are really appealing to those of us who recognize the AT as an experience beyond getting from Springer to Maine. A race from start to finish is great for some but enjoying the hike, even short sections of it, are often all that is possible for many folk. For them there is seldom a total failure when doing something to enjoy the outdoors and challenge oneself.

    Informative as always. Many thanks for all of the insight you bring to everyone who takes the time to listen. All views of the world offer a challenge either getting there or building wealth to apply to ones freedom. One's perception of "Fun" is only a state of mind an illusion if you will. People are all afraid of looking within themselves because of what truths may lie within; hence running the trail, high milage days. It all begins to sound just like the "Hustle & Bustle they left in there home life for the trail. Just my 2 cents. Have fun, life is a cosmic joke.

    "When I'm there, I have nothing better to do than be there." My time enjoying nature looks completely different than yours, but I understand exactly what you mean.

  • @Oldsparkey
    @Oldsparkey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I believe the mental attitude of a person will determine the amount of enjoyment or the amount of misery they will have. It's not just being on the AT but any of the hundreds of trails we have today. Also the choice of trail helps to make it more enjoyable. What do you want a sociable one , heavy use ( The AT ) or a solo one , light use ( Florida Trail ) . If you are going to hike , backpack , or day walk on any trail and not enjoy it then why do it.

    Wouldn't it be a nice idea to kick off the trail runners when getting to Pennsylvania and putting on traditional hiking boots to get through those rocks?

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it would! I actually might wear boots next time on the AT .... maybe. The advantage would be those thick rigid soles that many have. It will depend on whether I can find a pair that fit well enough to suit me. Thanks for watching!
