    Your picture of a tarp reminded me of how I got started. Faced with false allegations of domestic violence and child abuse. After over a year of legal battles I finally got access to my daughter for a week. Deeply in debt from legal expenses, I didn't know what to do with her. It was my then 8 yo daughter that suggested camping with a tarp. Our first trip was using said tarp, ordinary bedding, and a pack for me, and a day pack for her. I started a marvellous tradition that includes the West Coast Trail, and a couple of section hikes on the PCT.
    My luxury item is a second lamp. The second, (and hopefully the last) time was on the PCT, with a 2000' climb in the dark, and fearing that we would walk past the last campsite in the next ten miles.

    I think this may be your best video for hikers who have some idea about what you are explaining. I too was introduced to hiking and backpacking in Y-Indian Guides, Cub Scouts and then Boy Scouts (I said goodbye to my Scout on a Monday night in 74 leaving for the Army at 17 years old on a Wednesday) so scouting made me as a paratrooper in the infantry "the strangest soldier he'd seen" more than once. I replaced my Army sleeping bag with a Poncho and Poncho Liner inside the sleeping bag cover. I used my Scout mirror, carried a BS knife along with AF Survival Knife, and was always amazing my platoon when everyone was wet and I was dry.
    Fast forward to 67 years old and getting ready to hike again. Wife just retired and wants to go with me... I hope she enjoys it.

    Ah ha! Glad you could find a few luxuries!! ....😉 All kidding aside, this was another great message. Thinking outside the box to prep for bad news- and how we can learn from this, is crucial. How many 2019s have quit already because the mental prep wasn’t there. The trail isn’t going to cut anybody a break because they’re not prepared for the unexpected hardship. Thanks a million for posting this.

    Love your videos.... keeping it real! My dad was a fireman and took us hunting and fishing all over the Nevada desert. One time we got our truck got stuck in the mud and snow - my brothers slept on a tarp in sleeping bags on the snow and we didn't know any better! We had a good nights sleep , the mud froze , and we drove out in the morning.... we never had 'equipment ' - in the earlier years my mom would wrap perishables in newspaper - ice chests were for rich people. We 'dry camped' in the summer in Nevada and us kids learned to conserve water ( a matter of life and death ) - we never lacked drinking water, but knew not to waste water ..... those were happy, happy, days. ---- I miss my Dad.

      Peggy Louisville I have a video up of one rattlesnake encounter on a trail in the GSMNP, which from what I read is not common at all, and it did nothing to discourage me from going back out there the next day and hiking that exact same trail again. If you hike you will encounter a snake, eventually. It may be poisonous, but chances are it won’t be.
      My advice is to keep your eyes on the trail when moving, always, and don’t jog. You’ll be fine.

    • @jotade2098

      Not many snakes in my country, though i've encountered 3 that i can remember. Make yourself noticed (vibrations with a walking stick for example) and they'll steer clear of your path. Best wishes.

    I too, carry chewing gum. It had not occurred to me as a luxury item but you are right. While I brush my teeth every morning on trail, the carbohydrate-dense snacks and lunch backpacking fare usually leave my teeth feeling scummy; and a piece of gum is refreshing and does clean that scuzzy film feeling from the teeth.

The excellent commentary and advice reminds me of one of my favorite John Wayne movies, “The High and the Mighty,” in which the Duke has to shake sense into airliner captain Robert Stack, who freaks out and loses perspective when disaster looms. As suggested in the video, the true essentials to bring along are common sense, one’s wits and a positive attitude.

    I really appreciate your perspective. I'm often concerned by the perception that one isn't really serious about backpacking unless you're spending tons of money on the latest gear. I have this inate, contrarian idea that spending time in nature shouldn't cost a bunch of money. There really are solutions to many of the challenges in backpacking that don't involve money.

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have found DIY gear to be cost effective, and there certainly exists a DIY gear movement among long-distance backpackers. A good source for that for many years has been www.thru-hiker.com. They have a number of projects described, some kits and materials (I bought sil nylon from them), articles and a message board. Also, Ray Jardine -- who almost single handedly spearheaded the modern UL movement -- sells DIY kits at www.rayjardine.com. Maybe you have seen in other videos I have made my own tents, stuff sacks and backpacking quilt. Thanks a million for watching!

      My pack is a GoLite Gust. GoLite went our of business because they tried opening clothing stores and it didn't work out. They quit making the Gust just before that happened. So I got on eBay and bought a second one, also about 100 bucks. I have it stored with the tags still on it ... I am still using my original and it's in fine shape. Keep hikin' and thanks for being a great viewer!

    What is the most practical way to deal with mosquitoes, gnats, and biting flies?

    • @flatbrokeoutside6921
      @flatbrokeoutside6921  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would base that on what I know in advance about bugs in the area I'm going to. For example, in some places out west mosquitoes are horrible. Up north black flies can be very bad in the spring - and some people have a terrible reaction the first time they experience those bites. In the eastern US, mosquitoes aren't too bad if we arent right next to a pond. I would carry a tent net liner, head net and bug spray, all three, if I knew I would be in a nasty area. Otherwise I always carry a head net (less than an ounce) and bug spray everywhere else.

      @@flatbrokeoutside6921 I had the same thought...how about a video (if it has happened) of items that have crept back in to your pack, or may now that you are feeling better. That's if you have been able to get out at all. I am a 20+ year Massage Therapist and a huge recommend-er of magnesium to my clients. You have a VAST level of experience, how about a budget loadout just for an overnight on an extreme budget? The loadout wouldn't be the absolute lightest, but would be VERY accessible, and I am sure far from heavy. I have a feeling that you could do several videos even just compiling a bunch of the past and present DIY tips that you have sprinkled throughout your videos. The expedient alcohol stove and poncho camping come to mind for example...combined with some of your other suggestions into an actual kit to get people's minds moving. You would be an excellent gear reviewer because of your experience as a journalist and I suspect that none of the outdoor companies could afford to buy your review!

    • @dhands100

      @@flatbrokeoutside6921 I think that you would be an excellent gear reviewer because you by now in your life have most alsp likely done not so minimalist camping as well and you have for example camped with your daughter as she grew up. Ever use any of your gear on a road trip? I also suspect you could do skills videos so that when your more motivated viewers practiced them, they could go somewhat more minimalist as well. Skills and knowledge weigh nothing and tney cost only effort and time :)

      That's a good ol' .30-30 Winchester 94. I did not, however, have the money to own a gun like that. A guy I knew took pity on me and loaned it to me. And another guy gave me the plastic sheet. I would be hard pressed to pick any individual items as a luxury item. I would have to list everything in my pack and even the pack as a luxury item. it's all related and used in junction with each other , might say it's an interrogated system.
    Like you , I started with basically nothing but my Dad's old WW 2 Sleeping bag back in the late 50's. Graduated from the ground to a old army surplus jungle hammock. I thought that hammock was real luxurious. Seams like everything added over the years falls into the luxury list. Even the weight of everything over the years , now a 7.25 to 8.50 pound ( Base ) weight is luxury of the finest level. Heck , by replacing the heavy items with lighter items even makes my wallet lighter. As life goes on it does get better.
