RIP Pat Summerall. THE greatest NFL announcer ever. Didn't scream or overemote. Didn't need to. His understated approach made NFL telecasts must-see-TV,even if your team wasn't involved. He and Brookshier probably having fun right now in the broadcast booth in the sky. True class and elegance.
One thing people forget about Pat Summerall was that, not only was he the lead commentator for CBS' NFL coverage until they lost it following the 1993 NFL season, but he was also the lead commentator for CBS' golf coverage for many years (except when Vin Scully was the lead commentator for the Masters from the mid-70s through 1982), as well as CBS' U.S. Open tennis coverage. And what many people don't know is that Summerall also was the lead commentator for the NBA on CBS the first year the NBA was on CBS (the 1973-'74 season), and teamed up with Rick Barry to call the '74 NBA Finals between the Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Pat Summerall was a consummate gentleman and professional. Anyone who enjoyed sports knew and enjoyed Pat Summerall. RIP Pat and Thanks for all the wonderful memories!
Nice tribute to a versatile and enduring sports broadcaster -- a man that stood out, even amid what has always been a small, elite group. Thanks for posting.
Pat Summerall was "THE" voice of CBS Sports and then FOX Sports. You knew it was a big event on the NFL when Pat and John were calling the games. Summerall and Venturi were the best golf play by play and analyst ever. Jim Nantz and Verne Lundquist are the two closest people who remind you of Pat when calling major sports events.
Rest in peace to the voice of the REAL NFL on CBS, the NFC version. Pat Summerall will always be the voice of CBS Sports in my opinion. I picture him and John Madden calling the dream NFL game in heaven. Rest in peace to the both of them.
The greatest football announcer ever. Him and John Madden were the best duo. I grew up with those two. They were so unique and special in my love of football. RIP Pat!
nice...I liked Pat can't believe he's gone it's like my dad still can't believe he's gone....who likes Jim Nantz????!!!..he's good too isn't he????!!!!....quiet mild mannered huh????...like I said I liked Pat RIP Pat thanks for the memories of Sunday afternoons with you and John
Pat was a profession of his announcement of football and golf. The thing I like about Pat is that he didn't yell and shout out loud like these other ones.Pat and John Madden were the best doing football games.
Pat was 'comfortable'. He knew the game but didn't need to pound you over the head with his knowledge. He let the pictures do the work for him. He just needed three words to describe a play - "Aikman, Irvin, Touchdown!" Or sometimes two when it's first and goal from the two - "Riggins, Touchdowwn!" The best there ever was or will be.
Not only was he great with Tom Brookshier and John Madden announcing football for CBS and FOX, but I really enjoyed the class that he and Ken Venturi displayed during their golf broadcasts on CBS.
IT been a kick to see them him and Madden do one season with Howard Cosell and the three together lol.. It would be quite the experience one way or the other for sure
Pat Summerall will forever be the Voice of CBS and FOX Sports. Along with Football, he also excelled at Golf & Tennis. He is Missed, and will forever be Missed. Most of all, Pat Summerall had class and let the action and the color commentator do the talking, instead of him. RIP Pat Summerall.
You know come to think about it Jim Nantz is somewhat a lot like Pat Summerall in a way. I guess that's why I like Jim...he's like Pat. #RIPPatSummerall

@@sillygoose635 When CBS put Pat summerall & John Madden made them the NFL on CBS number 1 partnership in 1981 and the rest is history
Absolute
If that doesn't bring a man to tears, I don't know what will. RIP Pat.

Very well said Mr. Nantz, RIP Pat.....
Jim is well on his way to be in broadcasting galore as Pat is.
The quintessential voice of the big NFL game. No one touches Summerall. Especially Joe Buck.
Evident from the first time he really tried it ("Mitchell", in the same stadium as Pat called Wilbert Montgomery's run 21 years earlier), total fail

No better way to describe the great Pat Summerall.

The three best NFL play-by-play men ever: Pat Summerall, Dick Enberg and Jim Nantz. Not even an argument.

“He didn’t talk too much” Sports comms nowadays could do with taking a leaf out of Mr. Summerall’s book
