The commentators don't really know what they're talking about. He wasn't trying to be "fancy" or finish with "a flourish" at any point. And he didn't try to do anything flashy at all. He did make a mistake by slightly changing what he had been doing. But that was caused by anxiety... wanting to end the match before Park could rethink anything... and a certain over-confidence in his ability to draw Park into a quick double-hit to finish the match. That turned out to be a strategic error. But looking for a cheap quick double-hit before your opponent is fully prepared... is the opposite to trying to finish with a "flourish". By the time Park got back to 14-12 ...Imre had lost control of his own tactics... and unthinkingly retreated into a far too reactive defensive stance.
I am Hungarian. I remember my father and I watching this final in 2016 on TV. When Imre reached the 14 points I thought it couldn't happen that he would not win. What came after that was an unbelievable nightmare. (After the bout Imre wrote a book with the title "White gold".) It is worth noting that a very similar thing happened to her wife as well. His wife, Bea Kökény was a member of the Hungarian national women's hand ball team during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. They made throught to the final where they had a 6 goal (23:17) lead ahead of Denmark, 13 minutes before the end. And what came after that was an unbelievable nightmare. The team lost 31:27 to Denmmark. From a 6 goal lead. So both Imre and his wife have a silver medal which was once almost gold. Maybe this just comes with the family, I don't know.
They played the imperial march lmfao fencing is the best sport man
Feel so heartbroken for Imre. He is still the GOAT IMO
cap
Still wondering how this could have been digested without becoming insane.
So glad somebody uploaded the full bout, I couldn't find it anywhere, thanks!
As a Korean, I am still sad for Imre.
Such a good match, I love Park but it breaks my heart for Imre
the comeback was crazy
18:00 "he wants to finish on a flourish." And THERE was the problem....don't finish fancy...just finish.
