Great video Sam. I heard about polymerized tung oil and gave it a try. It's now my favorite finish. It dries overnight and 3 coats gives a nice sheen. Down side is it is expensive. It's available from Lee Valley. I've found pure polymerized tung oil from another source but will need to cut with mineral spirits or d-limoline to dry faster. This brings the cost down quite a bit. Keep up the good work.

Good video, Sam. I think once we find a finish or two (matte and shiney) that works for us we tend to stick with it. I love my Minwax AO which is mostly oil and MS with no varnish. OIl finishes sure make the grain pop.

You’ve done quite a few videos on finishes and this one was definitely interesting to me…thanks!

I primarily use polyurethane and shellac. Also some lacquer. I'll have to give some of the oils a try. Thank you for sharing. I wish you and Cheryle a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year.🙂🙂

Sam, TH-cam doesn’t really let you post links to articles, they just don’t appear in the comment or the comment doesn’t load, but if you have a google for UV drying of tung/linseed oil, there are some very interesting scientific articles on the subject. I’ve bought a few UV bulbs, they need to be long wave UV, which the party style bulbs are anyway, and you’d probably need to set up a little box area coated with foil to reflect the waves, but long wave UV light is meant to be very effective at drying the pure oils we all use on timber, ie. not polymerised or with added dryers. I’ve not had much of a play around with them yet so I can’t comment on the drying times, but in theory it should be effective at drying oils that otherwise can take weeks if not months.

Pure tung oil is my go to finish on my wood turnings. I also use the Tried and True oils and oil/waxes. One thing that few mention is the influence of how finely sanded a project is on how it takes oil. Personally, I find that a very finely sanded project takes Tung oil the best, most evenly and consistently. I like Tung oil because it is very forgiving. It does not gum up like linseed oil can. I also think it has better UV resistance than Linseed oil. Linseed oil really darkens under UV.

I use oil almost exclusively. My preferred oil is walnut oil. It polymerizes quickly. And is easy add coats later.

Merry Christmas to you and Cheryl. Helpful thanks. I like to use oil to bring out the grain, then buff to speed drying. Am I crazy to then use 1 lb cut shellac to seal? I like to then use a friction wax to give it some luster. Seems to work!

Hi Sam, Nice video. I was at Barnaveld and said hello first thing in the morning before the open house started . Anyway, It's been my understanding that unless the label indicates "PURE" tung oil the product is likely boiled linseed oil with "some" tung oil but probably not much. Is that your take on it also. Take Care, Myles

Interesting stuff, Sam. Curious though, why not seal the wood with a traditional sanding sealer (Myland's Zinzer etc) prior to diluted oil?

I've found polymerized tung oil and it dries much quicker than the raw stuff. There's a place that sells pure polymerized tung oil and I just thin it a tiny bit for finishing. Don't love buying pre-thinned stuff, half the can is basically solvent at this point.
