  • 🎥 From the cutting room archives of "FREEWAY CITY"....
This was an extended sequence about the state of Gardena High School that was cut from the final version of Freeway City.
Gardena High School is not actually located within the jurisdiction/city limits of the city of Gardena and falls under the control of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The campus is adjacent to Gardena.
Everyone I interviewed had strong opinions about Gardena High and its interesting to hear all the angles.
GHS motto: "If you can dream it, You can achieve it."

I grew up in Gardena and graduated Gardena High School in 1974. We were the Mohicans back then and won the Marine League football championship. We all got along together for the most part. It was a well balanced Black, Brown, White, Asian mix. There were a lot of clubs to keep you active; Key Club, Interact, Squires, etc. Most Asians there took some sort of martial art since Bruce Lee was at the height of his career.I personally took karate and judo. I am of Japanese ethnicity and remember playing basketball during PE against a group of blacks and when they did a fast break, I got lucky and high kicked the basketball, breaking up their fast break. The blacks froze and said, “That MF know karate!” I knew many of the black athletes since we all played football or basketball together at one time or another. I remember one nutrition break went to the Men’s room to pee. You never walked into the restroom by yourself but I had to pee. Two blacks who I didn’t know followed me and said “Give me yo money MF.” As I turned around, I heard this other voice saying, “He coo, leave him alone.” It was a black football player I had known since Peary Jr High when we had PE together. He had my back and the other 2 black dudes left. I said “Thanks D.” Great memories of Gardena High School. Although the demographics have changed, I still drive there for the food. Gone now are Teds, Naomi’s, Harry’s Aloha, Meiji Market, Tin Sing, Tijuana Inn, Lori’s, Casa Martin, etc. Diana’s, Josie’s, Giulianos and Pit Burger are still there. Great fond memories.

I graduated from Gardena in 2001. Man it was a rough school. Gangs fights drugs. If you can make it thru gardena you could make it almost anywhere. Though it was tough and myself included had to fight to survive several times I miss it. Simpler times

Went to school here in the late 80's and it sounds as though not much has changed. Then again, it's true of many schools these days.

Man when I went to Gardena there was a shooting with lockdown till midnight, metal detectors at the entrance, race riots, and I used to sit on a park bench in biology because there were too many students and not enough desks.

GHS was such a great school in the 70s. Sure, certain groups kept to themselves but overall, I think we got along really well. Once they experienced the first drive by (early 80s?). It was game over. Why did LAUSD decide it was a great idea to bring in kids that had nothing to do with our community? Now it’s turned into total crap. LAUSD did the same thing to Peary MS. Thanks for nothing. Mohicans had pride, Panthers… not so much.
