This is life changing. I have been pin basting on the floor for 35+ years. Now I’m in my 60s and it is harder and harder. Using your method, I just pin basted two lap quilts in less than an hour. Thank you!!!
Great video. I also hate sandwiching quilts and use my dining room table, but do it a little differently. I put the backing down first and then use the plastic clamps from the hardware store to pull it taught. Then I do the same thing with the batting, and then the quilt top. I use the blue tape for parts of the quilt that don’t reach the end of the table. I love your quilt.
Hi, what a game changer! I’ve been quilting for about 2 years but always dread making the sandwich. Ive always started with the backing , wadding then added the quilt top and have struggled to get it lined up and laying nicely. . Today I followed your method and it was so much easier and I got a lot better finish. I’m now confident I can get a good finish every time. Thank you
Thank you, Nikki. I've been dreading completing a quilt I made a while ago. I've known about a pool noodle method, but I like your way much better. You're always so encouraging. I've made a couple of your projects, and now I feel confident I can do the table method of making a quilt sandwich. ❤
If you don't have a table big enough I've gone to my library to use a conference room and pinned my quilt there. Also check out community centers it your church, they have large tables too. Happy quilting!
Your wonky house quilt is so delightful! I love all the different elements you put into it, and I’m looking forward to the book and playlist. Great job Nikki!
Mom here 😊. Got some tips to do things a bit differently so thanks-never have done the backing and batting that way in first step. But HAVE been using a table after doing first one on floor 30 years ago; yikes. However, I always cover my table top with cutting mats of some kind. ;-)
This has saved me, with a recent knee replacement surgery getting on the floor was not an option. I inherited a kwik klip in my mom's quilting stuff after she passed and had no idea what it was for, I had never seen her use it. It makes pinning so much easier. As a life time sewer, a new quilter learning all kinds of wonderful new things. Thank you
I don't have the floor or table space (we don't have a dining table) so I asked the library one day if I could borrow their large meeting room with several tables to make my quilt sandwich and the answer was YES. Just had to go online and book the room. I was able to six tables together (three across and two deep). I used pool noodles to roll each layer on. Spray basted and pin basted. Went home and quilted. Some quilt shops will let you use their space. A hotel may allow you to book a meeting room. Michael's may let you borrow their space. Just more suggestions for those that are in very small space like me.
@PinCutSew I was beyond thankful when they said yes! I'll definitely bring in donuts or bagel for them when I need to make my next sandwich. Just hope the ideas help others...
This technique is giving me hope as I just tried making my quilt sandwich for my first quilt on the floor and realized after pinning 50 pins that my backing doesn’t line up 😩😱😭 I was ready to not look at my quilt for a few days or even weeks to avoid repeating this floor process. But I feel good about trying this process - thank you for sharing ❤
Love this! Can’t wait to see your quilting. I’m considering the Baptist Fan for a quilt I’m making for my daughter but I’m thinking of using the big stitch method!
This is a game changer! I could kiss you! Now this Nana can get to sewing all the quilt tops for my kids and grandkids. Thank you, thank you,, thank you! (and my knees thank 😅you too!)
I recently purchased a 6' white plastic table like church's use. I butted it up to my 5' sewing table. Another small life changer. Love love love the Wonky houses!!!! I am having a very large time making some! Have a great day 🌞
Fun lady, fun easy way to layer quilt pieces. You could have saved thousands of knees and countless basting stitches if we’d have known about this one hundred years ago. You make quilting fun again.
Thank you ,thank you, a thousand times thank you. I made my first large quilt and really had this struggle about how to make the sandwich without damaging my back 😂. Excellent idea! You gave me courage ! Best wishes from Bucharest ❤
Thank you…I’m elderly with health issues and I think I can do this sandwiching now with less trouble…I’ve a lot of tops waiting in the wings…I’m with you on doing the backs…not a favorite thing to do…🥴 Thank you again!
Dang it!!! Where was this video yesterday around noontime? 😂😂😂 At least it was a small lap quilt and not a queen size…and that quick clip is so cool! Thanks for all the tips and inspiration Nikki! Can’t wait to see the hand quilting tutorial 😊❤
That is genius! I have basted on my table, but just by laying each layer on top of each other and hoping for the best. This helps keep everything even!
Dear, thank you for this video !!!! This method worked so good. sandwiched a large quilt on my table. Would never have thought to start with the batting and it is the solution. You are very clever. I didn't use safety pins. Just made a roll of the quilt and basted it with a needle and thread. Than you, thank you, thank you. And you are a lovely person to watch and listen to.
Thank you! For this very informative video. I was one who didn't know that you don't start with all 3 layers at once. No, not everyone knows that! Your method seems so sensible. And starting basting at one end and working toward the other is also a new, better idea than I had done previously. Many thanks!
Thank you so much for this! I've made my first quilt to from recycled jeans snd was dreading basting the backing to it. No batting since its so heavy already. I can't wait to do this!
Thank You! I always started with the backing. Never again, your way is much better than mine. I will be sending thanks to you every time I make a quilt sandwich. Also, will try the bamboo backing.
I really love your quilt and probably will make one! Thanks for showing the use of the handle with the pins. I e only just started quilting my projects by hand and the table runner I pinned wasn’t bad but for a bed size quilt I’m definitely going to want the handle! Also we are getting ready to live in an RV for a while and using the floor is not realistic for me!
I'm very excited to try this. I made my youngest daughter and her husband a king + quilt and there's no way I can get all of it under the machine and paying to have it quilted is not in the budget. I've had the top finished for a few weeks and I found extra wide cotton do I don't have to seam the back. I hate the pinning, I feel like I never get it right, but we just inherited a table that's 8 or 10' long so I think this will work. I was thinking of tying it, but not sure I will like it. It's a kind if pinwheel so lots if seams to follow. You really make this easy to understand. You don't get super sidetracked or go so fast I can't follow. Thank you so so much!
Wonderful video. Sometimes the tutorials on the "simplest" things for some is life-changing for others. I've been using my dining room table for a while, as in my 70s, it's not always a good idea for me to get down on the floor and try to do this. I, like Layla (hope I'm spelling that right), also have done this with the backing, batting, and top layered out in that order... and it just doesn't work all that well. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. ;-}
U can use a quilt ruler edge, like a quick scrapper (try different size rulers for ur personal need) to smooth out wrinkles and air pockets for each layer of quilt being basted....the quilt ruler edge gives a smoother and more efficient and taut smoothing out than using the palms of ur hand.
Thank you. I came upon this a few months ago and used it to pin baste my last quilt on my kitchen island. About to do it again for a king sized quilt. Thanks for saving my knees! :)
OMG! After years of crawling around on the floor, basting spray, etc. this system works great. I just finished a queen size, and not only was it easy to put the sandwich together and pinning on my large dining room table, the quilting on my domestic machine was so smooth! Thanks for this wonderful new technique :o)
Darn, so rude. I think this is one of the best quilts I’ve seen. Such fun! Really. I think I have one of these in my future, once I rebuild my scrap stash. Thank you so much for sharing your process! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love this method...as one with arthritic knees, making use of the floor out of the question! I make small charity quilts..(lap size, etc.) and have been using a similar method on my cutting table. I glue-baste the top and batting, then attach (quilt) them on my machine, using a curvy decorative stitch that gives the appearance of free-motion quilting ...the backing then gets attached, flipped right side out envelope style, and the edges get a double row of topstitching to simulate a binding. I have been using this method ever since I saw Jenny Doan of Missouri Star make a tote bag that way in a video tutorial. Not sure if larger quilts would be as easy though. 🤷🏼♀️ Great tutorial Nikki. Thanks so much. 👍🏻
This came at THE perfect time, I can’t do the floor either! Curious about a tip… when laying all together how to line up the center seam of your backing with your top to then be aligned perfectly in the center. An off center seam on the back makes me a bit crazy 😅. Thanks for this video. It makes this “unfun” part of quilting quite tolerable !
I love this also !! I started a lap quilt 7 years ago and just stopped quilting for a while, now I am finishing it but I changed it to be twin bed size and I've never made a hug quilt before. I am where its ready to pin and this video is perfect , perfect timing. I cant thank you enough. I'm 70 and didnt want to crawl on the floor, lol. Thank you for sharing this and for you and Lilah making me laugh :)
I had to laugh when you mentioned not wanting to have quilt tops that build up and not made into quilts. My 92 year old mom is now quilting a top pieced by her grandmother when she was 90 years old.
I also find this helpful, as I broke my neck three years ago and now cannot get down on the floor with a quilt like I used to. I have used the table layout to tie a quilt and found it worked well. I just discovered your videos and patterns and am really enjooying them!
Wow! Thank you for this video! I do the "quilt as you go method" so my top and batting will already be quilted together. Adding the backing on the kitchen table will be super easy. No more floor!
So glad I found this video ❤ thank you. I have wondered what kind of batting to use as my Nova Scotia guild only used polyester for hand quilting. What are your favourite battings for hand quilting? ?
Very helpful. Streamlined from what I have been doing. Thank you! I am looking forward to the hand stitching. The Babtist Fan interests me the most. I have a top made that Is special to my heart and I just haven't been able to put machine quilting to it. Thanks again.
I stopped using pins because it was so frustrating to turn the quilt over and see all the folds and puckers, and the take the pins out and start over. So then I used basting spray. Still have folds but not as bad. I like the way you do this❗️😊😊
I spread my quilts out on the table to baste, but I purchased large clamps from hardware section and clamp the quilt to the edge of the table top. It helps to be able to keep everything smooth and hold in place
Thankyou once again, when I baste my quilts again I'll definitely try your technique ❤ love your quilts. Oh hi from Australia so glad I saw this tutorial absolutely Fabulous ❤❤
I recently discovered your channel. I'm really enjoying your tutorials. Thank you :) Speaking of finishing quilts.. I have more than 50 quilt *tops in large bins. I bought a sit-down longarm machine a year ago thinking I'd have fun finishing them; I quilted ONE. I had no idea that the quilting process was a totally different hobby -- haha! I discovered I love the piecing process (obviously) and the quilting process not so much (obviously).
This is life changing. I have been pin basting on the floor for 35+ years. Now I’m in my 60s and it is harder and harder. Using your method, I just pin basted two lap quilts in less than an hour. Thank you!!!
Yay, way to go 😁
This is the first time I think I can make a quilt. Thank you.
I found this video just as was beginning a Queen sized quilt. Thank you for persuading your daughter it was needed! Saved my knees and back!
Finally someone’s brain that is busy and wonky like mine, absolutely love it❤
New quilter here! This was fantastic - thank you! I definitely wasn't excited to get on the floor. This makes it look much easier!
Your technique seems great, Nikki! Thanks for showing us this.
I love this!! Totally doable- can’t believe this isn’t something I’ve never seen before. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. I also hate sandwiching quilts and use my dining room table, but do it a little differently. I’m so glad I saw this video. I’m ready to make a quilt sandwich, and I have always started with the backing. This looks so much more efficient. 😊
Me too, for some reason I always start with the backing but I’m going to try it this way next time, but with my beloved basting spray.
I am going to sandwich a quilt tomorrow and also always start with the backing. Definitely will be using this method!
Thank you, Nikki.

Brilliant way to pin a quilt! ❤ Thank you for the video. You are adorable 🥰

I love your wonky house quilt as well. It is so adorable! Thank you for the table pinning tutorial. It was very informative and helpful.
Thank you so much, on behalf of all of us dining room table quilters!❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
Amazing. Thank you! I was stressing about literally having no table at all. Stupidly, I didn't even think about the kitchen island!
Thank you for the demonstration. Most people don’t show you how to do this.
Great 👍🏻 tutorial!! Definitely going to do it this way!! And, I absolutely LOVE ❤️ your quilt!!!
❤❤ Thank you for all your help & videos
Thank you…I’m elderly with health issues and I think I can do this sandwiching now with less trouble…I’ve a lot of tops waiting in the wings…I’m with you on doing the backs…not a favorite thing to do…🥴
Thank you again!
Just tried your method-GOLDEN. Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing this. I have not seen basting done on a table other than with pool noodles. That didn’t work out well for me.
Dang it!!! Where was this video yesterday around noontime? 😂😂😂 At least it was a small lap quilt and not a queen size…and that quick clip is so cool! Thanks for all the tips and inspiration Nikki! Can’t wait to see the hand quilting tutorial 😊❤
I don't have the quick pin, but I use a crochet hook. This is my favorite method. I use a folding table.
A crochet hook, brilliant!
That is genius! I have basted on my table, but just by laying each layer on top of each other and hoping for the best. This helps keep everything even!
Thank you for taking the time to show us an easier way to make the sandwich. I’m looking forward to trying this method on my next quilt.
Ladies at my church use the tables in the fellowship room. They push 4 of them together and it works great.
I was able to find the Kwik Klip on Amazon!
When the pins come out of your container in a huge clump, if you kind of pounce them on the quilt top, they will come apart from the clump.
This is a great tip, thank you!

I put a vinyl tablecloth down before quilt basting to protect my tabletop. Works great.
Thank you so much for this! I've made my first quilt to from recycled jeans snd was dreading basting the backing to it. No batting since its so heavy already. I can't wait to do this!
Similar method but I use Pool noodles! It is a game changer for me and will never baste any other way.
Thank You! I always started with the backing. Never again, your way is much better than mine. I will be sending thanks to you every time I make a quilt sandwich. Also, will try the bamboo backing.

Love the wonky quilt! Hand quilting is very personal😊
ha ha don’t assume we know anything! This was perfect, not buying a long arm anytime soon, love this!
Thank you for this. I have stressed over this for years. You make it look so easy

I know you probably meant “huge” quilt but i love the term “hug quilt”
I had to laugh when you mentioned not wanting to have quilt tops that build up and not made into quilts. My 92 year old mom is now quilting a top pieced by her grandmother when she was 90 years old.
Thank you good instruction. I use a paint can opener to save fingers when pinning the top.
Painter's tape! You're brilliant!
Brilliant, thank you. So much easier for me than my usual method. Looking forward to your hand quilting video.
I also find this helpful, as I broke my neck three years ago and now cannot get down on the floor with a quilt like I used to. I have used the table layout to tie a quilt and found it worked well. I just discovered your videos and patterns and am really enjooying them!
Thankyou Nikki, this helped me. I love how you share with us. I enjoy you and it all. You are the LORD'S blessing sweet one. ❤😊
Wow! Thank you for this video! I do the "quilt as you go method" so my top and batting will already be quilted together. Adding the backing on the kitchen table will be super easy. No more floor!
This is a game changer!! Thanks for sharing.
This was also a HUGE help, thank you!!
Loved the house quilt so I ordered the book. Can't wait. Thanks
Good idea to first put batting on the table. 🌺
This is a great method - thank you! Never thought to use painters tape to create tight backing. Love your channel!
Luv your wonky house quilt. ❤️
I use my king size bed to sandwich quilts on
This looks so much easier than trying to do 3 layers at once. I’m excited to try this. Thanks so much! I also received my wonky house book!😊
Just fabulous! Did one on my island last month and it turned out great! I"m on to quilt top #2 today! Thank you SOOO much!
Great tutorial. The quilt is going to be great.
So happy I found your channel! TFS
The journey of the Improv House Quilt has been so much fun.. thanks for sharing. FYI.. I have green carpet in my loft.. and it is on my list too 😅
Haha! Solidarity 🍻
I thank you so much! I have hip issues and cannot get on the floor anymore. This will save my life...lol ❤
So glad I found this video ❤ thank you. I have wondered what kind of batting to use as my Nova Scotia guild only used polyester for hand quilting. What are your favourite battings for hand quilting? ?
You made that look so easy! Thanks! Now, to find that tool, or something that will work like it!
I like the way you do this❗️😊😊
I got your improv digital version ❤
I spread my quilts out on the table to baste, but I purchased large clamps from hardware section and clamp the quilt to the edge of the table top. It helps to be able to keep everything smooth and hold in place
Great tip!
Thankyou once again, when I baste my quilts again I'll definitely try your technique ❤ love your quilts. Oh hi from Australia so glad I saw this tutorial absolutely Fabulous ❤❤
Thank you 😊 The best tutorial on sanwiching ever. Works perfect with spray basting as well 🤩🤩🤩
Couldnt be more perfect timing! First quilt ready to sandwich and I wasn't sure how to do it. I can see i will need more pins lol.
I recently discovered your channel. I'm really enjoying your tutorials. Thank you :)
Speaking of finishing quilts..
