I never thought you'd actually do 3 tracks together like this! Excellent stuff 👍👍👍 The next two songs can genuinely stand on their own for videos if you want. After that, two instrumentals you should do together. Then the last two tracks. Your choices to clump some of this album together is really making it better for us AND you, dude 🤝
Your excitement is contagious! This was one the last albums from them that I listened and I clearly wasn't paying much attention at that time because it's better than I remember.
so glad you went with the order i suggested! i love this album so much and i wanted to set you up for success on your reaction, and it seems you're loving it as much as i am.
The slow/chill Gizz albums tend to get more hate than the heavier albums. Not sure why, might be people who got into King Gizz with the heavy stuff and just don't like anything that isn't fast and heavy. The irony is that the self-proclaimed metalhead is loving it! I think that shows good taste in music. There's a lot to love about this album if you appreciate good musicianship
Dusk to dawn on lygon is one of my favorites of the album. It's a cookie song! Should be good as its own video. The book is about to be your favorite though. Studio vs Live in sydney !
Yeah Mild High Club is a band you want to listen to on some heavy drugs haha. But it's also very technical and jazz elements to it. I like to call it psychedelic jazz
sketches part 2 is one of my top gizz tracks like first of all its so damn groovy then on top of that the production and all the layers make for pure ear candy
I think people don’t like it because it sounds a bit like elevator music. But it’s pure ear candy. Every bar is a new sound no where else in the album. It’s full of just pure ear candy I can’t get enough. Plus this album has the best bass lines bar none
next one is "dusk to dawn on lygon street" by cookie, is in 6/8, has some lovely backing vocals, and interestingly in the personnel listing bass guitar is listed to Stu, Cookie and Alex(of MHC), and Cookie has a really short(really short) fretless bass solo there. the one after that, "the book", might turn to be your favourite out of the album, its lyrics are about some kind of religious cultist who misinterprets the religion as having some harmful rituals, they rarely perform this song live, but live in sydney featured drum solo by cavs, for some reason they love to perform this song in their microtonal shows so i think the main organ melody/riff is microtonal, but the rest of the song builds around the notes that match up with the standard 12tat system (atleast this is how i interpret it). looking forward for multiple songs reactions!!! (the second drummers name is eric)
This means you don't hang out in the band's reddit, probably a good idea! Whenever they do community-rated tier lists, Sketches always gets knocked out early, or rated near the bottom. Also Needledrop (music reviewer Anthony Fantano) rated it pretty low when it came out
@krentzplays makes sense. I used to hang out on the sub reddit a lot a few years back, but then I noticed I enjoyed King gizzard a lot more not interacting much with that part of the community haha. They are nice people tho
Ya know, I don't know why the fanbase is split. I guess some people just don't like this style, I do though lol so it's cool with me. Glad you are enjoying it so much! 🙂
Was not expecting you to enjoy this album so much! I think it's slept on so much because a lot of people think it's boring, but watching your reactions to it has really changed my opinion on it. Its a really good album! These tracks are all great. When I first heard Cranes, Planes, Migranes, I couldn't tell if the train sound was in the song or not since I live basically right next to some train tracks (also Alex Brettin from Mild High Club is playing microtonal keys). Spider And Me is pretty good too, I thought you'd say it's too happy for you. And Sketches II is awesome, I never realised how good it is. Next up is Dusk to Dawn on Lygon St. Cookies track!! It's really nice.
On the album cover you’ve got Stu and mild high club at the door. Cavs in the window to the left. Amby and Lucas in the window to the right. And in the top triple window it’s (from left to right) Cookie Eric and Joey. Yes Eric, the other drummer, was in the band at this point. (2017) he left in 2020
I think a lot of musicians especially like this record given the inherent weirdness of jazz chord progressions, and I think that’s also where a lot of the fanbase kinda overlooks this one. The subtlety of this album can’t be overstated, and much of the fanbase are just straight metalheads (no shade, whatever flips ur flapjack)
I think you’ve reacted to all the albums that Chunky Shrapnel is related to so maybe after this album you should react to that. I think it’s their best live album so far.
Rockdariff is a certified Sketches enjoyer, impeccable taste
all my fav gizzheads love sketches
It's my favorite Gizz record. Those haters just don't understand
the book is my favorite song from this record, unique stu vocals
It's also one of the only songs on this album with a live performance! Live in Sydney is goated 😭
@jpak8 Chicago '22 was good too.
@@devon8419 yeah but I'd argue Sydney has the better-shot video.
Banger song choice bro
So glad you're loving this album! I still can't understand why it doesn't pop up in more peoples fave lists, it's a top 3 for me.
Its an amazing album. Still crazy to think this, fmb, poly, gumboot and motd all came out the one year. The quality level. 2017 was mindblowing.
So glad you're digging this one. Underrated as hell.

Same here! I've always known there's something there, but it hasn't resonated for me till now. You're doing God's work, rockdariff!
Welcome to the Sketches Appreciation Club. There are dozens of us!
so glad you went with the order i suggested! i love this album so much and i wanted to set you up for success on your reaction, and it seems you're loving it as much as i am.
i can’t wait for you to get to a journey to shell, thats one of my favorite deep cuts in their entire catalog
I've been hollering for you to do this one for albums now... glad you're digging it
Man im so happy youre loving this album.
This album is one of the few instances where Eric actually plays some drum parts

This might be my favourite album of theirs. The bass lines are top notch.
Getting closer to THE BOOK!!!
NEXT IS COOKIE. He thrives in this style and plays bass like a CHAMP!!
I think people don’t like it because it sounds a bit like elevator music. But it’s pure ear candy. Every bar is a new sound no where else in the album. It’s full of just pure ear candy I can’t get enough. Plus this album has the best bass lines bar none
I never noticed the “mmm yeeeah” til now 😂😂😂😂 this is why I love watching these
You like that? Oooh

Great record glad you’re enjoying it
I have never seen any negative comment on this album

Time for Rockdariff to get into jazz I think. You might be a jazz fan in the making. You might dig bands like BadBadNotGood
😂ive always thought Jazz was metal just without distortion…like animals as leaders is one of my top 5 bands and their pretty jazzy
Sketches is an amazing album it took me a while to get into it but I love it

The Chilled Gizzard bootleg (find it on YT) has a demo instrumental version of Spider and Me that's adorable.

if you're clumping the next two together i'd recommended also listening to a live version of the book, the one from sydney 21 has a very great solo
Please, for The Book do a studio vs live against the Sydney version

It’s a good record. I don’t understand the hate.
