    I am 62 years old. I was trained on the saxophone by an elementary school music teacher. I never got the tone out of my Saxophone that I was totally comfortable with. I played in a few bands and then stopped playing the Saxaphone in my 20's and moved on to the Harmonica. Having now youtube as tool in which to explore, I decided to investigate how others form their embouchure for the Saxophone. Having watched EDSAXSCHOOL I have determined that I had been instructed improperly from the elementary music teacher years and years ago. I just kept doing what I had been originally taught. I have wasted 54 years of Saxophone enjoyment. Thanks Ed. The Saxophone is back out. Big difference.

    +edthejazzman, I'm a classical clarinetist, I played the sax in HS, and a decade later I'm getting back to it (started back up in November). I'm having a hard time un-learning a clarinetist embouchure and it leads to a lot of teeth, jaw, and tension at the corners of the mouth. I've spent the last 3 months trying to un-f#$% myself and I feel like I'm making incremental progress at best.
    My goal is to do some busking by the end of summer, and I don't see myself hitting that goal at my current pace. Any help you could provide would be very appreciated.
    Cheers!

    Hi Ed, I inherited a 110 year old Buescher alto sax, and since I recently retired and have some time, so I thought why not learn it? I'm a 66 year old beginner and have watched a few guys on TH-cam teaching Embouchure. I became quite frustrated because I wasn't getting the same sound as the first guy I was trying to duplicate. Needless to say I began listening to a few more Embouchure videos and I found of the 6 videos maybe 2 sounded the same as each other. So I believe my sound is closest to yours in this video. So I guess my question is, as a beginner, should I be able to duplicate any of these guys or am I okay?

  • @DavidGoddenMusic

    Hi Ed,
    Thanks very much for the very informative video.
    I was a little confused by the reference to keeping the reed parallel to the floor.
    When I have my Alto Sax in position, the reed seems to be about 30 degrees down, and I would have to push the sax a long way away from my body to get the reed to be horizontal!
    It looks similar to me in the video actually, when you were demonstrating it.
    So did I misunderstand something?
    I think the top of my mouthpiece is about horizontal, but not the reed!
    Thanks,
    David

  • @Firebrand55
    @Firebrand55 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have the Knowledge! In my long life, I've met few experts who can effectively reach the absolute beginner like myself; they have found it difficult to hold back on what they know; you can.
    In Ross Russell's Charlie Parker biography, he reckoned that Parker had practised for 19,000 hours by age 21....proof that practise makes perfect!

    • @1rocknroy
      @1rocknroy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm guessing that was about 4 hours a day if he started at age 8.

    I am a beginner and am having difficulty holding my tenor sax properly. I have a shoulder harness and have adjusted it so the mouthpiece easily comes to my mouth but my left thumb gets cramps from pushing the horn to my right and my right thumb aches from the weight of the horn. What am I doing wrong?

    Ive got tenor sax and Im new to it. When I play, I can get clean and good sound above G note, on the contrary, when I try on G note and below, I get one note above all the time. With the octave key, I get all notes like its have to be. My friend tried and played my sax. There's not mechanical thing. What would be your diagnose? Thank you...

    Hi . I'm going to by sax from amazon what is the best sax for beginners? Is it the tenor sax ? I like jazz and quiet . Romantic music

    • @bluebu4554
      @bluebu4554 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      أمجد فطاني I don't know much about saxes like that but I do know the clarinet and I know which sax compares to each clarinet. I would say that alto is harder because the rhythms are harder and more skilled like a regular clarinet. Tenor has simpler rhythms like a bass clarinet. I say this based on my experience looking at sheet music.

      Try Jay Better Sax. He says go Yamaha. Could find a million student alto YAS 21 or 23's. Bundy II would work, too. Trick.is finding a clean one. You don't want to need major work for one you. just bought.
      Buy. one you can return. From.reptable music shop, preferably a good repair shop.

    • @christopherburton4309
      @christopherburton4309 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the low b flat you must drop the jaw and think "deep" "hot air". You must keep the jaw locked in place, however. The air must travel through the entire horn for this sound. Your first time playing that note will probably be very loud. As you build strength in your face muscles, you'll be able to control the volume more. Hope this helps!🎶 Play on.
