    Hi when forming your embouchure you can simply think of the word what. By the time you reach the end of the w your embouchure is formed. No jaw dropping as that alters the muscles. Think of closing a sleeping bag in its carry bag. Pull the string closed and you see a circle forming. To test embouchure pressure is correct, blow your mouth piece alone in to a tuner and it should produce an A. If you embouchure is correct you should be able to play with mouth piece upside down or at any angle. Very old and wise player taught me this and it’s so true. Have a go and let me know. Cheers!

    I just want to say how nice it is to listen to a guy who sooo genuinely wants to help beginning sax players. You have a great way of explaining embouchure: step one, step two.... And I really appreciate how close you have your camera and that it's angled a bit so I can see a lot of your mouth. I'm a classically-trained sax player who is beginning jazz so I'm reworking my entire embouchure. Would you say that your embouchure is more a jazz embouchure or classical? Thanks. Best wishes.

    • @HuubClaessens
      @HuubClaessens 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep the classical embouchure! You don’t want to destroy a beautiful clear sound? Playing jazz has nothing tondo with that! You really want to sound lime that? Just saying..

    • @jaykay1053
      @jaykay1053 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HuubClaessens Thank you for replying to my comment. I'm interested to know more about what you're suggesting. If you have a website, yourself, or if you know of a player who does, whose playing you admire for his/her embouchure - playing jazz - I would be very interested in watching/listening to them from your perspective of re: classical vs "jazz" embouchure. (On the other hand, please feel free to post here again with more about your thoughts on this topic.) Thanks again.

    Consistent practice over the full range and long tones will help you to produce them. At the beginning of the year I set a goal to practice deliberately for a minimum of 2 hrs daily. Most days I do two hours and sometimes 3 or 4 hours; I have not missed a day practicing since 2018 began. High notes, middle notes and low notes are coming out more beautifully than before.

      That's some serious dedication you have!! I recently got a cheap sax to try and learn with (decided to save up for a decent one while I learn), but having stupidly thin walls I've been a little chicken about practicing incase neighbors thinking I'm murdering one of my dogs lol!
      I've ordered a mute in hope it makes me a little quieter, although kind of wish there was a way to only get sound through headphones as I'm usually awake all night and hate that I can't be using that time to practice without risking noise complaints lol!
      I just hope once I'm a little less self conscious about how bad I probably sound that I can be as dedicated as you!
      Good luck with your hard work and I'm sure you sound great already after so much practice :)

      Emzy HippoZimmer funny that was one of the reasons I quit saxophone years ago. And now I have my house and neighbours are far so I’m free to be as loud as I can. Just bought a sax to get back into it. One word of advise. Do not take a long break such as 1 year or more. You literally have to restart almost from 0 again. Not only the sax playing but also the ability to read music fast.

    I played sax a younger guy in high school and in local funk bands. But, I haven’t played now n over 30 years . So, some my old band brass section had breakfast and decided to just break our horns out again , just to hang out have some fun...hopefully. But one problem I’ve always had was to fold my bottom lip over my teeth. You can imagine what that does to the inside of your lower lip...big problems! So, this time I intend to start the right way. Thanks for the tips!

    • @joeblankenship377

      Your bottom lip should fold over your bottom teeth a little bit since you need to use your jaw to keep a firm embouchure. Just don't roll it over too much.

    Okay, so, you're like the very first person who didn't mention tucking your lower lip over your teeth to create a cushion for the reed to sit on. Why didn't you do that, because I'd rather not learn a bad habit and do something incorrectly at the beginning, so I'd have to go back and learn something different later. Could you please explain why that whole step was skipped?

    Every one of these sax sound tutorials is good, but...none of them recommend the one essential ingredient to producing a good sound. Listen, listen and listen. Find a contemporary player or one from the past whose sound you like, as a starting point to developing your personal sound, and absorb that sound by listening.

    Not so good bringing your lower jaw up “naturally” when you have a small lower jaw like me 😂

    Why do you have the sax a such a weird angle? It almost looks like your playing a soprano.

    I've been playing for about 4 years now and every once in a while I still struggle to get that nice rich tone we all strive for, so if your having trouble getting that just know it happens to the best of us.

    The beginning of the video reminded me of the kind of instruction videos my ex-girlfriend used to watch (albeit for a different purpose).
    On a more serious note... I personally combine the jaw-dropping method for breathing with the mouth corners one and breathing through the nose. Sometimes you are left with very little time between 2 passages, and dropping the jaw can result in missing the following note(s).

    Funny that I have played for many years and I always got air in through the nose. I never drop my jaw. No teacher ever told me otherwise. It actually seems to take more time to drop the jaw to breathe. Using the nose is quicker

    • @Chronic.Pivoter
      @Chronic.Pivoter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! I found that weird about the instructions too. I personally try to do the jaw-dropping thing as little as possible, because it takes too long, and there is a slight chance the lower lip will not end up where it was before.
      Not sure how you can play certain passages without adding breathing out of the corners of your mouth to breathing through the nose. My first teacher told me at the very first lesson that "saxophone players don't breathe through the nose".

    is it ok if i put my bottom lip under my front teeth?

    • @Troy-Echo
      @Troy-Echo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is how i used to do it. I've been told that is more of a classical way to create your embouchure, and the way this gentlemen is teaching is more of a jazz style that gives a different tone. I tried both and although I played with my bottom lip over my bottom teeth, I prefer the sound the was this guy is teaching. Everybody has a little different mouth and embouchure so just try both and see which sound you prefer. With my lip over my teeth, for me, the sound was more tinny sounding. I just started practicing again and I prefer this style and sound over having my lip over my teeth. Depending on your embouchure, the other may be better for you. Best of luck!

    This has the breathing technique I have been looking for, that does not exist on any other beginners quide (like how to inhale while playing). Most tutorials just brush it of saying "just breath while taking a pause, just like when talking". But the actual info of openeng jaw, and breathing under the reed, is the thing I have been searching for. Just bought my first sax, and it will be mailed to me soon. I intend of learning by myself, but might take some classes if I don't advance enought as such.
    Thank you for the video, and cheers from Finland!
