Windows 10 - Can't Find Other Computers on Your Local Network?

  • If you can't find other computers on your local network after the April 2018, you can fix it with just a few steps.
    The Windows service that checks for other systems is not set to start automatically. With just a couple of changes to your Services, you can see your other computers on your local network.

    I am commenting again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I'm happy that there is an old guy geek helping out with these issues. They certainly are not easy to find on any Windows help websites or blogs!!! Maybe Windows should be paying you a commission :-) I have literally been searching for days. Thank you again. My network is running properly and my computers are visible to eachother and sharing!! A happy network family:))))

      Wow, 2 comments! You might be interested in my newest video about sharing computers on your network. Since I published this video 6 months ago, some things have changed, especially on my Insiders PCs. When they release the next update, you may have this problem again. If so, try resetting the same services. But there may be 1 more step to do. Here's the new 2019 version of this video with the extra step when you need it.

    From one old guy to another, thank you, thank you, thank you! I've spent countless hours at various times researching this problem, making sure all settings were as they should be, etc. What was really frustrating was the fact that everything was visible on my network in the past. After watching this video, I thought "Could it really be that simple?" While following your instructions, I found that the two services were set to "Automatic" on my laptop, and "Manual" on my desktop. Made the changes you suggested and now everything works!

    • @Oldguygeek
      @Oldguygeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Over the last 18months I couldn't tell you how many hours I've spent resetting, rebooting, replacing cables, hard drive swaps, hardware upgrades, sharing, unsharing, granting everybody everything and i still couldn't even see my own shared files let alone discover them on the network.. until now!! I still get permission errors when i actually try and access the shared files but hey, who cares.. a no is better than nothing! So stoked! Thank you!

    • @Oldguygeek
      @Oldguygeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say the 'newest build', I'm not sure which you mean, but check your sharing settings first. They may have been reset. I lightly cover it at 20 seconds into the video. If that doesn't help, reboot each system. If, after a few minutes they still don't show up, just set them to start without a delay. And reboot again.

    This solved the problem I was having with connecting to my desktop computer running Win 10 Home to my new laptop running Win 10 Pro. After following the above instructions, the desktop computer finally showed up under Network on the laptop's File Explorer.
    I did have another issue where I was asked to enter my "credentials" when selecting the computer icon. I wasn't sure what credentials it meant so I tried everything I could think of. After many, many suggested solutions from forums, it turned out that I needed to have a password for my account profile, which I hadn't had. I added one and used it and my login name and it worked great.
    Many thanks for posting the helpful solution.

    I used this 3 weeks ago and it worked great. But this morning ONE of my network computers would NOT display the other shared computers on my network. I repeated this and everything was back. I THINK a "free" app I downloaded to test SSD speed, may have been the culprit. But whatever the cause, I just love your solution. Thank you.

    Very useful. Now my question, should you leave your laptop in the Automatic (delayed start) mode if you connect to another network? Or, to put it another way, if your laptop is in this mode, will your files on your laptop be visible to other computers when you connect to another network?

    • @Oldguygeek
      @Oldguygeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. The shares you setup should not be set to Everyone. You should just allow your account. When you access those shares, it will ask for the account name and password. Once you enter the correct values, you can access the files without entering the credentials again.

    Thank you, Old Guy Geek, you have almost solved everything! With your help, I have been able to allow the new laptop on our home network to find all four of the other Windows 10 machines (and itself).
    One last problem: how do I get this new PC to find the old Windows XP machine that we keep on a shelf attached (by USB) to the network’s only printer/scanner? All the rest have had no problem for years but this new one shows no sign of finding the XP PC. Do you have any ideas? The XP machine is cabled into the router, not wireless.

    • @Oldguygeek
      @Oldguygeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure it's Workgroup is the same as the rest. Back in the day, workgroups were imperative for connecting. Right-click on the PC icon and then Properties. You should see the Workgroup name there. To change it click on the Advanced link and then the Computer Name tab. The second button.

    Thanks a lot for sharing this solution !
    PS:
    Yesterday the problem occurred the first time but without any system changes in both computers as far as I know,
    last updates were several weeks ago or so, only virus-definitions are updated daily,
    so I am still wondering what caused this change of settings.

    • @Oldguygeek

    Thank you. A friend did a Windows 10 reset on his desktop and didn't keep any files to get rid of a bunch of junk that didn't uninstall so well. Everything went fine except we couldn't connect to the NAS we use as backup drive. The NAS setup and firmware updater could see it fine and another computer on the network could see the NAS, but the computer that was reset couldn't see the NAS or the other computer. Tried so many things, I was wondering if it'd be easier to just take the hard drive out of the NAS and put it in an ESATA enclosure. Changed the services on the Windows 10 computers and now we can see the other computers and the NAS.

      Well, it's because they had to turn off HomeGroups and they chose the safest way to implement it. If they turned on sharing for other systems without our approving it, it could have been real bad. Glad you got it working. Enjoy!

  • @tek_soup
    @tek_soup 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank You Very Much! This problem i have had even before the update, i would have 1 computer not seeing the other, but the other computer could see it. You would think after all these years and different versions of the OS and the Money Microsoft spends, that this would just work. This problem was on Non Homegroup also, i allways never used homegroup.

    • @Oldguygeek
      @Oldguygeek  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it did affect those using account sharing as well. I just mentioned HomeGroup because it was a big change and everyone using it should have been affected.
      Glad it worked for you.

    Hi one of our computers will not allow the change to the startup type - its greyed out - I'm assuming this is some type of permission issue hoping you can help us figure it out. Thanks

    • @Oldguygeek
      @Oldguygeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say 'one of our computers' do you mean your are on a company system or one of your personal computers? If it is a company computer, it could be that the system admin has restricted rights for that. If it's a personal computer, are you logged in as an administrative account?
