A VW video that I believe was sponsored by Volkswagen themselves to celebrate 21 years of the Golf GTI. Hosted by Chris Goffey of original Top Gear fame and featuring the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 Golf GTIs and the (at the time) latest VR6. The video features the history of the cars, some of the famous modifiers of the time and some rally footage, mostly of the mk3. Produced in around 1996, this video was available on VHS only.

Two mates had nearly new MK1 Golf GTIs. Such a fantastic car in its day.

Great video, plus a nice reminder of what Top Gear used to be like.

@@canoaslan1011people used to want informative motoring advice about cars which were affordable. I stopped watching when it was all about supercars drifting round a track. The younger generation today have a short attention span and need “excitement” to stay interested. A generation who flick from one dumb piece of crap on social media to another constantly. Nothing sinking in, onto the next pointless bit of rubbish. Thats why TG changed. Clarkson May and Hammond were amusing to start with but it was wearing thin in the end. Im glad the BBC has cancelled the show for the foreseeable future but im sure it wont be missed by most of those who watched it. As I say, always something else to watch for that quick fix. People go on TH-cam to watch car reviews now anyway.

The genius of the GTI was the fact that it's basically a compact family car with the performance of a sports car. GM cam up with the idea of sports-car performance in a family-car package in the sixties with its Chevelle SS and GTO muscle cars, but only VW could put true finely engineered sports-car capabilities in a standard passenger car and create something that was more than just muscle. When the GTI came to the U.S. in 1982, it thankfully ended the era of Detroit economy "sport" cars that were merely economy cars with magnesium wheels and side decals that had the same weak engines and bland suspension as the base cars. The Chevrolet Cavalier Z24, the Ford Escort GT, and the Dodge Omni GLH wouldn't have happened without the GTI coming first.

Billsteins were standard on the Mk1, not a mod. My 1600 got me out of so many dodgy situations. So forgiving. You could stamp on the brakes mid corner and it would cock a rear wheel and dig in and somehow get you round. They rarely talk about how well tuned the 5 speed box was to the engine. Always seemed to be in just the right rev range with cam on song. Also the little details that distinguished the model, like the dechroming and black accents, something that is the standard nowadays, at the time was super chic and modern. Sweet little car I still miss.

I have an 82 VW rabbit pick up with a 2.0 liter ABA the power to weight ratio is close to the GTI. It is a blast to drive and if you stay out of the throttle 32+ MPG. 😊

At 0:23 No, Chris. The Beetle never had a water-cooled engine. It had a Porsche inspired, air-cooled flat four.

Only the modern Beetle had a water-cooled engine, and that car wouldn't debut until 1998.

46:58 VW claimed the electronic traction control and the 'plus suspension' would make the 1995 VR6 GTI easier to reign in on wet road starts but that was pure marketing BS. The torque steer was still there as the ETC would only work up to 40 km/h wheel spin and as anyone knows who has driven a HOT VW, that's a blip in 1st gear. Also, the ETC was actually part of the ABS and that ABS made the VR6 GTI a tad skiddish when you needed predictability in braking effort. 28 years later and that '95 VR6 GTI still puts an ear to ear grin on my face. And then there's the intake of air, a battle cry of the VR6 12V that simply just makes my bits fizz, as James May would say.
I also had a 1979 GTI with a 1.8L solid head, Schrick 280 asymmetrical cam, hogged out airbox, K&N air filter, dialed in AUDI 5000 warm up regulator, Super-Sprint headers straight piped to the rear resonator oval end, SACHS suspension kit, Neuspeed 22mm front and 25mm rear anti-roll bars, Neuspeed front upper and lower tiebars and 15"x6.5" wheels. The flames that car could spit were simply hellish to anyone tailgating me in traffic.

Very probably owned over 30 mK1 (Rabbits) here in the states in the 90's. I just bought an MK4 Cabrio. What a shocking difference from the MK1. Really no resemblance between the 2 except for the emblem.

The cool ones come in batches of 5,000. I don't like the new Golf's, Mark 8 and up. Vw should have kept their relationship with Recaro and BBS.

I'm sad, I really thought you made a 'Lore' video on the Golf GTI. Yes I should have read the full title but well....
But I'm absolutely certain that it would have been really good and cool if you did.

Also most later models of the GTI were 5 doors and GTI should be 3 doors
