INCOMING LONG-WINDED COMMENT: Dude, this video could not have dropped at a more perfect time for me; I’m currently working on revitalizing a batch of Sonic characters that I created some years ago. I was originally only going to make one, but I like creating unique dynamics and having my characters interact - especially when they meet in unlikely circumstances. I definitely agree with one of the opening statements about giving a character a theme/motif. It makes them feel more coherent, in my opinion. I’m personally using a pair of a few motifs to base my own characters off of: the ‘SPEED’, ‘FLIGHT’, and ‘POWER’ archetypes from Sonic Heroes and ‘LAND’, ‘SEA’ and ‘SKY’ (not taken from anywhere in particular). I just wanted to voice some of my opinions on this topic. I’m also probably going to explain this in a way that could be usable for anyone who’s scrolling through the comments and is looking to create a character design of their own. Call this a little add-on to what was already voiced in the video. I really enjoy functional character design: design elements on a character that have a functional purpose for being there. For example, an idea that I have for one of my own characters, an african wild dog, is darkened eye rings, in a similar fashion to Silver. This isn’t necessarily the most original idea, but they do serve a purpose! An idea that I have for this character is him living in a hotter climate (I still need to find an in-universe locale I can use), one that is often exposed to the sun. The rings on [and around] his eyelids absorb the majority of the light that would enter them, preventing long-term blindness. Character designs based on the area a given character inhabits is also a quirk that I really enjoy. Taking a specific environment into account when creating a character can make for some interesting designs. I could see it as being limiting, but I would argue that it gives the direction of a design more focus and could consequently cause you to use design elements that they may never have thought to use otherwise. It could even be easier, in that regard, since having a focus is generally less intimidating than having a sea of endless possibilities. The ‘functionality’ of a character design doesn’t just have to be based on the environment, though. It can also be based on things like their personality, their likes and dislikes, etc. Maybe your character is from a different time period; maybe they have an occupation that requires them to have certain tools at their disposal more often than not. Also, don’t be afraid to take inspiration. There may very well be an artist that already thought of a character for a concept that you really enjoyed. I want to encourage you to ‘steal like an artist’: take multiple ideas from multiple sources of inspiration, mesh them together and put a spin on them that’s unique to you. They don’t even have to be specific to the Sonic franchise and/or community. Just be sure to put in your best effort and to not claim any one idea as solely your own (specifically if you took it from somewhere else). SIDE NOTE: It’s actually kind of crazy how genuinely solid a decent amount of the IDW background character designs are. I definitely agree that they go heavily underlooked and are genuinely good sources of inspiration. I wonder how much genuine effort goes into making them? It can also just look cool for the sake of looking cool. These are just my opinions and this video is full of JC’s; I don’t think an artist should abide by someone else’s logic just because they said that’s what they should do. Again, these are guidelines and opinions, things you can think about when you might be lost on where to take an idea. Also, a little side tangent, but I love the designs of your OCs, dude - especially Zephyr. Even if it’s just silly audio, seeing your characters interact with each other in those skit animatics/mini storyboards was part of the reason I wanted to make multiple in the first place, actually. I have an idea for a flightless bird character for the ‘SKY’ portion of my own trio, and want to use a bit of Zephyr's design as inspiration! The relationship between Zephyr and Lasai is cool, too. It’s very rare to see openly LBGT characters in the Sonic community, I think - especially between two men; I definitely can’t remember the last time I’ve seen one, at least. I don’t necessarily want to make a ‘big deal’ out of it but, as a queer man myself, I just think it’s cool to see. The designs for Zephyr and Rev’s gloves and footwear also just itches something in my brain LOL I’d like to ask where you got the inspiration for them from? Thank you for reading this, if you did, dude. I don’t usually comment on videos I like because I go on big yap sessions when I do; I’m usually passionate about the things I’m commenting on in the first place. I could yap on and on about this kind of stuff (especially when it comes to Sonic, this franchise has had me in a chokehold for over a decade).
@@VOWLmusc Thanks you for your comment and also for adding your opinions as well! I definitely agree with them, and I’m also glad you like my OC designs as well! Regarding Zephyrs and Rev’s gloves and footwear, both of their footwear were inspired by a pair of Nike shoes and boots that I found while looking for clothing inspiration. Rev’s gloves were inspired by one of the Forces fitting room gloves (so I guess I kinda broke one of my own tips 😂)
one of my favorite types of sonic oc type that i think is super underused, is human OCs. even though its antithetical to the whole point of a sonic oc, nothing sticks out to me more than a human character. either someone as weirdly built as eggman, a charming friendly character like the unleashed humans, or a typical anime style character like the adventure games and sonic X.
Omelette. I LOVE her design so freaking much and how she was actually Eggman upside down. Also designing badnik or a Chao or Wisp OC!! I love drawing robots ^^ I might make a mobian OC some day but I wanna practice drawing Sonic Characters first :3
For the point about the animal type you should pick, I still would encourage both sides. A lot of overused ones still stand out. It's all about how you go about it. No matter how many hedgehogs, cats, foxes, or wolves I see. The design and story always stood out nicely
I always appreciate the people who are able to make a genuinely good hedgehog OC. I feel a lot of even good artists struggle with making hedgehogs that don't look identical or nearly identical to Sonic. I'd say for designing hedgehogs look less at Sonic and Shadow and look more at Silver and Amy as they look much different. Also I believe if someone's gonna use a "generic" animal such as a bird the best course of action is to pick a specific species. For example I've had this idea floating in my head for a while of a character called "Torch Song" who is a cardinal. I've yet to fully design her since I'm still trying to figure out whether or not I want her to be a hero or villain, but I do know I could use her species to my advantage since the cardinal seems to be one of the less used bird types.
I 100% agree with this. I have 2 OC, one is a common rabbit, and another is a sea slug. Luckily, I follow most of these rules, but I still want to improve my OCs or Sonic fan characters since I truly do want them to look as realistic as possible. Awesome video! Keep up the work!
I usually don't mind picking the common Species or the common Body Types, but I always make sure to have the personality somewhat unique among OCs/FCs. One of my OCs looks somewhat like a Red Metal Sonic or a classic Edgy OC, but he's actually a scientist who reached a point of no return when his wife had "died" and another OC of mine got his permission to change him into a Cyborg.
I would recommend staying away from Greek, Norse, and Egyption mythology for names if you are going the mythology route. Mainly because those are the most well known and talked about mythologies so everyone is going to pick names from them and it'll make your character just one Loki in a crowd of hundreds.
I kind of disagree with pick an animal no one uses because if that animal is something you don’t like than don’t use it just stick what animal you like
even so If you like echidnas you couldn't use that animal, I mean, isn't supposed that knuckles is the last of its species? or am I losing an important part here?...
@ there’s always a workaround, the story says didn’t say last echidna in the entire omniverse or whatever so there’s a excuse for it or do what this guy did
He's not saying to pick one you don't like just to pick one that isn't common. Make a list of uncommon ones and pick the one you like most from those. Stuff like cassowaries, horshoe crabs, hyenas, grebes, bilbies, elk, cicadas, or gharials. There are over two-million species on earth. I'm sure you can find one uncommon one that you like.
I find personally when designing and creating sonic oc’s I have the most fun straying from the typical mobian, my three favourite oc’s I’ve made are as followed: RB: a robot made by eggman that commands the arial fleet (him and metal sonic beef a lot) Sirpa: while this character is hedgehog styled their design is majority inspired by Mephiles but also a bit of Eclipse from the Archie comic series as well, while with lore terms they are connected to specifically to Mephilies. Ebula: a chaos inspired creature, made out of space goop, technically an alien that takes the form of an echidna With themes I tend to focus on what I want to portray with theses characters. For Sirpa it’s a sense of trying to find one’s self. Trying to find a sense of you, while trying to accept where you came from and what you are. For Ebula it’s finding a sense of belonging and home in a foreign place RB is just here for the sillies
Already said it on twitter but im so flattered to see my dude in this video 0:20 this was a fun and informative watch, so many cool ppl in here too! Cant wait to see more stuff from you yeaa
I honestly love that you're one of the few people I've seen on TH-cam who actually presents their opinions in a video like an actual opinion that can be modified however, and not a static fact! Great job my dude! I'm currently in the process of creating my own first Sonic OCs, and I want them to be unique and special, but I've been struggling a bit, and your amazing video will help me a lot! Thank you~
I pick an animal(or make up an animla/ fictional animal) I pick a theam I mess around with colors. I pick a power related to animal(sometimes i just give it a cool power though) I pick a personality related to the theam or color. I give it a powerful and recognizable shape(big hair, spikey, big body part, epic clothing) Then i give it a name with two syllables (sometimes i just give it a normal name like dylan, or sammy)
This was super helpful! I'm making a sona (a caracal with rocket boots and a specialized cape to help them fly), so it was good to see what worked for you as I'm assembling his lore, design, and surrounding "cast." It was also really encouraging to know that I'm already on a pretty good path
yayyy thank you for the tutorial!! i'm more so trying to figure out how to actually draw my silly guy(Cody/Cody the Red Panda) since i've only ever drawn humans, but this was really helpful for building him and his lore more!!
I like Sonic OCs who try to be new and develop on previous ideas , or even build on other characters weaknesses! I love all Sonic OCs , because I love it when people want to be creative , I just love more original characters than recolors practically!
First of, FANTASTIC VIDEO!! I think you really hit the nail with most of your points when it comes to character design philosophy in general: not just with Sonic! Second: THANK YOU FOR SHOWING OFF MY FEESH GAL AAA (which funny enough, her nickname is Kai. Full name is Kaimana though LMAO)
I'm gonna make a new Sonic OC now, because when you pointed some common flaws out my mind went "On second thought, my OC is boring, I can do better" so thank you so much for the tips!
This video was so perfect! I was actually working on my own script, and tips to use in a video similar to this one. I've been making Sonic OC's for YEARS now, and all the topics you mentioned are genius! And you described your points in such a clear and calm way. I have a few of my own things to add to this, so long goofy silly comment coming through lol. Drawing different animals is the MOST FUN part of the designing process for me. I've learnt about not just new animals, new facts about animals I already loved, but also learn about mythology of animals or cultures relating to animals! For example, the Chinese Lion Dog is such an interesting animal! They have cool powers that relate to ancient China, and the traditions the people of the country still holds today! I personally made my two Chinese Lion Dogs relate to the mythology of China. They hold magical mirrors to trap spirits away in the abyss, because the costumes used at Festivals have a history of wearing mirrors on their heads. And these mirrors used to chase away spirits, and that's why sacred temples often have Chinese Lion Dog statues in front of them! That's only one example of mine, but I've had so many more eye opening learning experiences from looking up new animals! So don't just stick to regular animals, but look into mythology or history! You can find some cool things that can make you improve on designs. Picking out animals that nobody has ever used is really fun too! I personally had a moment looking up "Firefly Sonic OC", and NO RESULTS WERE THERE! Which is crazy to me, because fireflies are such wonderful and cool creatures. If you have a species you love, draw them! It's incredibly fun to learn about animals you love, and see what you can do with their designs. Instead of just sticking to what you know. I've struggled with this before in my early days. But drawing new animals is a lot of fun. Establishing a theme is SO GOOD! Establishing a theme in your character is SO important. Some people have told me that they're scared to give their oc's a theme, because they want their oc's to be flexible in writing. But I'd argue that establishing a theme can help you with your character's backstory, dialogue, and dynamics with cannon characters and your other oc's! I've had this happen with many of my older characters. I didn't establish one theme for my oc's, and then got bored of them because I couldn't think of how to make cool ideas with them. For characters I've made, some of my favorites have had one theme. It distinct my one character from other characters I have! I've noticed in my fans, that they enjoy the characters who are most distinct from the others I make on my channel. Some of my channel favorites are Ruthie (her theme was a punky violent girl), Payne (a bat who is emo/gothic on purpose), and Harrison (rich and snobby looking rat guy), and so on and so forth. Different body shapes aren't only just helpful for making Sonic oc's, but just for making art in general! I've been trying out body types myself. Sure it's hard to get used to, but learning this stuff is really important. It can also help your character's silhouette stand out! Silhouette's in drawing are important, having a strong silhouette for your character makes their design so much stronger. Plus, their body types can help play into something like their strength, their personality, or even stuff like their weakness. You can do so much making your characters look muscular, chubby, skinny, boney, tall, lanky, skinny, and so on. And if you include them in a cast of other oc's, they stand out even more! For names, uhh a few of mine were there. XD But for real, I've seen SO many oc's named Midnight or Kai. What I personally like to do for a lot of my newer oc's, is puns, or Sonic naming ideas. Getting names from myths, or just names I like is nice. But thinking of a silly name, that can fit into Sonic cannon is just as fun! For example, I named one of my Sonic oc's Headbutt The Goat. Her name stands out BECAUSE her name is so silly. Their names can have deep meanings, but sometimes silly names can be a big strength. Especially if you're making a more non serious character. In the end, writing will make people care about your character, regardless of their name. I think that's all I wanted to say. But I just wanted to say this video was amazing, and I love it very much. Hopefully when I eventually finish my own video, I can add some of my own things to say. But I think this video was perfect for newcomers, and even oc making veterans like me. I actually have been following you for your oc's skits on TikTok and Instagram, but for some reason I wasn't subscribed here yet! I just fixed that issue, you've got my subscription! ^w^ Side note, Lasai is such a cute character! He's my favorite design you have on your channel! 💚🦎
Silhouette is also a big thing on making an oc, not just for sonic but in general! Using fashion and aesthetics also can help get an idea and theme out for your character. What would they like to wear, what would they like seeing. I also think that making a character is best done when you develop their traits and personality first then Design! If you design and then build off of it the character could work but it will take going back and changing over and over.
I think another important thing, especially if this OC is part of a story you're working on, is to try and tell a story with their design. It could be scars, items they carry, the clothing they wear, their demeanor, and even a combination of all of that. It's really cool to pay close attention to a character's design and see hints of their story in that design. Edit: as an aside, I think people shouldn't over-design background characters. They're nice, yeah, but they're not the main focus of the story.
Great video man! I really love Sonic ocs and have been working to revitalize one of my older ocs and build up a few new ones. The tips here are really good and have really helpful advice in them!
Loved the video and your Character designs look nice!, i have an oc that is a Hedgehog, i named him Nova because it has to do with how he was created (im gonna be honest after i made him i didn't realize that they are alot of Sonic oc's with the name Nova). Every day i look at the story i have for him and look for ways to improve his story and writing and make a good story. I remember when i looked at his first design and he looked horrible but like you said not every design is perfect. I always try to look for good tips to make his story better and not make him an annoying protagonist. His friends/his team are a Bunny and a Wolf
Thank you. Now I have a mouse OC named Zaptain. He’s really small, but makes up for it, since he has a plasma mech, and really tries his best to fit in with it.
I feel like sharing about some of my OCs, specifically two of them who definitely are my favorites from the story i'm making: Guara (currently just a placeholder name) and Chase! Guara is a maned wolf. He's really tall and "scary-looking," but in reality, he's really shy. The theme I picked for him was the rainforest because it has a lot of places for him to hide, and I like its quiet, mysterious vibe. His name comes from lobo-guará. One of my favorite details about him is his grenades, which are designed to look like guaraná fruits. :3 His silhouette is long and slender, while Chase (another OC) is smaller and sharper. I thought it would be nice to create a contrast between Guara's reclusive, shy personality and Chase's louder, rowdier personality. Chase is a raccoon. He's very quick and unpredictable. Being a thief, he's often running around the city (I'm currently working on the worldbuilding). He's very impulsive and tends to get into trouble easily. The name Chase comes from... well, a chase. I thought it would fit him since the cops are often "chasing" him around (pun intended). My original sketch of him was a hedgehog, but I wasn’t really satisfied with his design and lore overall, so I changed it. I'm still working a lot on him. :P (open for constructive criticism and/or tips on how to improve them!)
Only real time I can actually a reason for you making an oc based on a popular species is if you're making fan kids for the main cast. As for making an OC based on your Forces avatar, I can admit, I'm slightly guilty of that but I've been able to put a little unique spin on her to the point she's her own unique charater now. besides, that was technically how Whisper was created One thing I wanna see more of is Zeti oc's, mainly because there is so much potential. You can go wild with the designs because there is no one true way to make them as seen by the deadly six having outlandish different body types and designs. The personality can be so different to the ones in canon and the only naming problem you have to worry about is making the name start with Z which may be a be easier or harder since some deadly six members tend to just have a word that's associated with them as a name that just has a Z shoved in front You can also make them vastly different then the ones we've seen. My main Sonic FC is a zeti who was kicked from the deadly six due to her sweet and pacifist nature. Because of her Zoolingualism ability and how hostile the lost hex was, she left it and started a little vet clinic near spiral hill. Unlike the rest of the zeti who have vibrant colours, she has a pastel aesthetic and a gently demeanor. This doesn't mean she is a weakling pushover as she still has some powers that zeti have like super strength and magnetism manipulation Plus, it could be a good way to expand on the species as a whole. I mean of SEGA is never going to give us anymore lore of the zeti then it's up to fans to work with what we have
4:12 *sweats in making a black cat OC (Reason behind it is black cats are often associated with Halloween, Friday the 13th, death, etc. So I wanted to incorporate that in my OC Cloak!)
That has to be the only Sonic oc tutorial I approve of so far, as someone who has the biggest Sonic oc arsenal, years of experience, and too much time in their hands. EDIT: except the name part Sonic characters naming conventions are based after what they do/are Sonic is fast, Tails has two tails, shadow is dark, Blaze make fire, Cream&Vanilla are sweet, their chaos also match their owners! Cream&Cheese, Vanilla&Chocolat! Etcetc Personally, my ocs end up with names like Bash the bear, but it's actually not that hard to be creative with these. There's certainly a thousand clever names you could come up with.
Yeah they usually have a very clear connection to the character's theme, with Sonic OCs the name tends to be the very last thing I decide on because having most else fleshed out helps with ideas
@@TurtleCraftZ1 Same, that's also how I go about it. Again, you're likely never gonna find a "David the hedgehog" unless the objective of the character is to be average. (Pointing at Dave the Intern from Sonic Boom, lmao).
Well, in one year ago, I’ve made five sonic OC and only two are the ones that you pointed out were from sonic forces a bear and a wolf to say, but I still use them not for the sake of it, but for the majority ideas that at least make them stand out even though they may be used mostly. Great video by the way 😊👍🏾
Thank you this was perfect for me! 🙏 I have 3 Sonic OC ideas in my head and I have to just draw them out now. I think they are pretty orginal animals and characters in general.
I’m thankful I tried thinking of a name using an AI that is very unique for example example one of my newest Ocs I did put a lot of thought into their name Dawnith especially the meaning it means start of a new day I put some thought into it because I was thinking about character growth also thank you for the rest of your tips as they helped me make my sonic oc!
I have art designs and backstories and everything for mine. I actually went for that it would actually be pretty good to be in a sonic game, I chose a sugar glider, but there is some pros and cons. Pros is that its not that popular especially when it's a male, and the theme is it's like a scout because it glides through the air, and a unique thing is, it is like a character that would fit in a tribe, like my backstory is he was born in the mystic jungle for away from the populated areas. The cons it can really be related to ray, and I have a hard time accessorizing it with the glider wing thingies that is attached from the waist to the lower part of the feet.
When creating Sonic OCs remember to take advantage of guides and tips for the creation of any other kind of characters. Theres so many things to consider when it comes to the out look, story ect that not many people ten to consider. ALSO I think dark and edgy backstories and characters can work as long as your able to convey it and give reasons to why the character is the way they are.
From what ive figured out in my own oc creation (..both fan and original original) sometimes going with stuff that is always recommended and changing something that you enjoy, but might be seen as cringe, can actually ruin an oc (atleast for yourself) so in the end do whatever feels right! 'If it aint broken dont fix it.'
I’m making a fan character who is a solenodon! Since the irl animals look similar, I’ll be using clutch the opossum from the IDW comics as a basis for his design! Also working on a pangolin. Gonna make a sonic heroes style team with them
Awesome video Jake also……APOLLO and KAI?? What’s wrong with that?! I have a koi fish oc named Kai and You helped me pick Apollo’s colors!! Don’t worry jk I’m not mad I found it hilarious that two of my ocs names made the list of names to stay away from. Awesome my man will see destiny is not a unique species at all. She’s a fox, but oh well foxes are my favorite animal (does that count is keeping an original to me?) Great work Jake! Keep it up!
Thanks! NOTHING WRONG with those names XD I've just seen them used for a lot of other characters before. I will also say foxes are another animal that I do see used a lot as well, but like I said in the vid, at the end of the day, you can design your character however you want :)
i will keep tip 5 in my toughts as i design my new sonic oc and this are the greatest tips video ive seen and tip 6 might i add is any types of colour media will be good but i tend to stay away from markers you can use posca paint pens as long its on arcylic paper and not the regular paper because it will seep through the paper and your oc will be ruined
Those are some good tips! I have a turtle female caracter called Vieth, it's kind of a shortening of the name Vietnam, and i really like her design, i tried my best to make a good turtle female caracter! The rest are more comum animals like cats, dogs, and other that are not so comum are a chipmunk and a maned Wolf. I plan on making more Sonic ocs on the future!
I really like this video I’m trying to make a sonic oc but it’s hard also what would you say is your favorite character you made and what made you like sonic
I didn’t even think of making a hedgehog oc until I fully developed 3 other characters I have a bat, a moth, a sloths, an isopod, and finally a hedgehog
I started redrawing old ocs and all of them were existing species, I kept a few as hedgehogs but changed two to foxes as I didn’t want too many hedgehogs. The rest of my old ones are a crocodile, an echidna(the redesign is half echidna) and a dhole/dingo hybrid. My newer ones are species that are a *little* more creative like a maned wolf or opossum
I didn't think this kind of video would exist, I saw the link for this within Gigi's art server, and I was able to get some art of my current sonic OC who.. I honestly think is one of my best creations to date, hell I even ended up with a piece I commed ending up being top result on google (Kori the Coyote, the light blue and lime/green canine looking one) I didn't want to go full out on clothes since most of the designs mostly gloves and shoes, so a basic set of gloves and some unique boots of sort was easy to come, for species, Coyotes I think are not exactly used as much as one would think, and the name rolls with it, Kori the Coyote has a good ring to it y'know? His color scheme is also just a basic soft blue and green theme, with the only difference being his gloves and boots, which I find is fine, Sonic has the glossy red and white sneakers to contrast his blue fur. His main Story themeing is based around Little Planet, and unintentionally, his color scheme kinda matches that of color themes in CD, and he can color match with one of the time stones! His lore is a long process to go through, rather not write it here but I didn't cheap out in it, just know it tries to expand on the Time Stones' placement in the world and how little planet has little lore surrounding it
If you want your characters to stand out, I suggest using vibrant colors :] Vibrant colors stand out and so do about all the main Sonic characters do. It is super difficult to follow this, and I tried it myself once, it definitely made the difference.
Would you ever do Sonic OC submissions? For example, I submit one of my own ocs with a whole detailed bio, and you list out what you think is cool-from design to lore-then list any minor critiques about the character you might have! Like “oh, personally, id make this guy a bit more colorful” or something like that. It would be cool.
Tbh we need more Gizoid OCs (I'm making my first oc a Wolf/Gizoid Hybrid, I'm also doing a thing where I try to remember what my Forces Avatar looked like and think how I can change it to where I still recognize it but it's also different enough from the Avatar at the same time!)
( 5:24 ) yes, Dragons do exist in Sonic. So a Dragon OC is very much plausible. As far as I know, we only have 2 dragon characters. Dulcy from Sat AM and Archie comics. And Trip the Sungazer, when she goes Super. Do us a favor and fill in the gaps. We need more dragons.
one of my sonic ocs are a mobosaur, a niche mobius-specific species that came out in a 90s archie comic. literally never seen another mobosaur oc, i think they might actually be rarer than human ocs
I have a sonic oc and she's a hedgehog but her theme is the stars, she doesn't remember much but will be the last person ya wanna make mad.•^•, yet i don't have an exact name with her but i want it to be star themed sense she, without her knowing, does come from them.:^
Another thing you could do for names: Put words relevant to the OC theme into google translate and pick either Latin or Japanese. Half the time, it’ll kinda suck as a name, but you could end up with something pretty good :]
6:51 GODDAMNIT 5 OF MINE Shade, Spike, Jax, Ash, and Axel for anybody curious but idk if Axel counts since he's not a Sonic OC Also I named Shade when I was like 9 since my only other Sonic OCs at the time were named Dash and Miley and they were next gen characters and I was an uncreative lil crap that wanted a Shadow clone. Lil bro's original design was Shadow but his quills go down like Sonic and I took away his eyeliner and jet boots and and and uhhh he had weird poofy front hair that took up 1/3 of the page 😭 Dw, now he has even better eyeliner, I gave his jet boots back, changed the highlights to be on the bottom, gave him a more raspberry look, and changed the god-awful front hair to something more chill Sorry for yapping about my 3rd oldest Sonic OC, have a cookie random stranger ^^ 🍪
my first sonic oc was made in 2016, her name was clara, she was a purple hedgehog, i made a family for her, but then i think she was sonics sister in some way too? in recent years ive changed her to be more reminscent with "sonia" from sonic underground, sort of like my own iteration of that canon. then in the recent months ive created hedgehog/human hybrid characters, 4 to be exact, excluding another i hav thats deceased.
i had an idea, that generic sonic ocs are nicknamed 'gadget's to me because they look like sonic forces avatars 😭😭😭😭 from my experience, i design my ocs as if im designing a new main character for sonic. i think as if this character will be canon, and that motivates me to make them extra unique, but not crazy
So I want to make a sonic Original character and I want your guys's thoughts on it. Im thinking of ripp the shark( not sure on the type but maybe a whiptail or bull) and they would have a punk aesthetic and they like engineering and hiking.
Not my two sonic ocs being a cat named Minerva and a lion-deer (aka a cat with a lion tail and antlers) named Misha, both of whom have very neutral color tones (Minnie has the color palette of a Siamese cat and Misha has a mostly brown color palette with white streaks in her hair)
Well, I guess I won't worry too much about my oc. Especially in terms of species (mine is a hawk, because let's be honest, there's barely any type of bird oc ever being made). I have all the concept details down for my oc, if you wish to hear them. But unfortunately, I'm not an artist. Or at least I never touched a digital pad that most artists use nowadays in my life.
It all depends on what being me motivation and inspiration, like with the year of shadow and sonic movie 3, i got inspired because of shadow, and made a sorta AU oc lately, only similar thing he has to shadow is his back spikes, and being a hedgehog. I wanted at least one hedgehog oc because again thats what brings me motivation and inspiration the most. I really struggle to connect with sonic OC's if they arent related to my two favorite sonic characters in some way unfortunately;v; (sonic and shadow) so theres been so many ocs and oc ideas ive made throughout the years that are just lost to time because i didnt form a connection to them. ;v; but this most recent oc is staying as of right now anyhow :')
So I made this sonic of when I was a kid that was like shadows long lost daughter or whatever but he secretly really cared for her and she was like the opposite of him like she loved bright colours and loud music kinda like Enid from Wednesday she looks like him but with pinkish spikes instead of red and eyelashes 😭😭😭 I never gave up on her tho and I draw her regularly lol
i have a sonic oc named estela who's trying to pay off her parent's debt so she's a merc and she's dressed in gothic lolita, her main colours are brown, purple, black and white and she has a parasol that turns into a bow and a hairpin that can be used as as an arrow (that comes back into her hair once the arrow lands) that, I'm a big fan of j-fashion and games like arcaea and touhou, even though i was a sonic fan for longer, i did have a few sonic ocs for my sonic fanfic but i drew a lot more for my touhou fanfic, I think i would also be a mountain goat if i was a sonic oc.
Another tip for the name: You can also use their character traits for the name for example: Canon Characters Sonic = running at Sonic Speed, Tails = 2 Tails, Knuckles = Knuckles My OCs/FCs Herexo = Hero + Exe, or Cyrina = Cyan/ Cybernetic
INCOMING LONG-WINDED COMMENT:
Dude, this video could not have dropped at a more perfect time for me; I’m currently working on revitalizing a batch of Sonic characters that I created some years ago.

I like the way Tracy Yardley draws human characters. Somehow they just fit really well with the animal characters.
Omelette. I LOVE her design so freaking much and how she was actually Eggman upside down.
Also designing badnik or a Chao or Wisp OC!! I love drawing robots ^^
I might make a mobian OC some day but I wanna practice drawing Sonic Characters first :3
I saw some make eggmans daughter and they called her "Amelia Robotnik" W character design.
It feels so weird to be new to an old fandom, I still have to learn so many things and I kinda feel inadequate sometimes lol
We gotta get that one Sonic oc tutorial from every sonic art tuber😂 Good video!
@@AzulBlues09 Lol 😂 thank you!
I 100% agree with this. I have 2 OC, one is a common rabbit, and another is a sea slug. Luckily, I follow most of these rules, but I still want to improve my OCs or Sonic fan characters since I truly do want them to look as realistic as possible. Awesome video! Keep up the work!
@@astratball thank you so much!
@@jcr3ative yep!
@ there’s always a workaround, the story says
didn’t say last echidna in the entire omniverse or whatever so there’s a excuse for it or do what this guy did
He's not saying to pick one you don't like just to pick one that isn't common. Make a list of uncommon ones and pick the one you like most from those. Stuff like cassowaries, horshoe crabs, hyenas, grebes, bilbies, elk, cicadas, or gharials. There are over two-million species on earth. I'm sure you can find one uncommon one that you like.
I like drawing characters that have something in common with other sonic characters
Having your character share traits with other characters is cool, as long as they aren't too similar to already existing characters
@@jcr3ativethx for the tip
I find personally when designing and creating sonic oc’s I have the most fun straying from the typical mobian, my three favourite oc’s I’ve made are as followed:
RB: a robot made by eggman that commands the arial fleet (him and metal sonic beef a lot)
Sirpa: while this character is hedgehog styled their design is majority inspired by Mephiles but also a bit of Eclipse from the Archie comic series as well, while with lore terms they are connected to specifically to Mephilies.
Ebula: a chaos inspired creature, made out of space goop, technically an alien that takes the form of an echidna
With themes I tend to focus on what I want to portray with theses characters.
For Sirpa it’s a sense of trying to find one’s self. Trying to find a sense of you, while trying to accept where you came from and what you are.
For Ebula it’s finding a sense of belonging and home in a foreign place
RB is just here for the sillies
Already said it on twitter but im so flattered to see my dude in this video 0:20 this was a fun and informative watch, so many cool ppl in here too! Cant wait to see more stuff from you yeaa

Bolt and Blitz , they're like brothers
I pick an animal(or make up an animla/ fictional animal)
I pick a theam
I mess around with colors.
I pick a power related to animal(sometimes i just give it a cool power though)
I pick a personality related to the theam or color.
I give it a powerful and recognizable shape(big hair, spikey, big body part, epic clothing)
Then i give it a name with two syllables (sometimes i just give it a normal name like dylan, or sammy)
Also make sure that your oc design fits with the personality of the character

Omg!! Thx thx thx thx!! Friend!!

I needed that, thanks !
Now I thought about a redesign that is so drastic for my oc it will make it look like a new one
It was only after many years that I was able to find a name for my main character and this short girl's name is Dizzy The Jerboa, i love her :3
Loved the video and your Character designs look nice!, i have an oc that is a Hedgehog, i named him Nova because it has to do with how he was created (im gonna be honest after i made him i didn't realize that they are alot of Sonic oc's with the name Nova).
Thx
People need to see this
I feel like sharing about some of my OCs, specifically two of them who definitely are my favorites from the story i'm making: Guara (currently just a placeholder name) and Chase!
His silhouette is long and slender, while Chase (another OC) is smaller and sharper.
(open for constructive criticism and/or tips on how to improve them!)
Only real time I can actually a reason for you making an oc based on a popular species is if you're making fan kids for the main cast. As for making an OC based on your Forces avatar, I can admit, I'm slightly guilty of that but I've been able to put a little unique spin on her to the point she's her own unique charater now. besides, that was technically how Whisper was created
One thing I wanna see more of is Zeti oc's, mainly because there is so much potential. You can go wild with the designs because there is no one true way to make them as seen by the deadly six having outlandish different body types and designs. The personality can be so different to the ones in canon and the only naming problem you have to worry about is making the name start with Z which may be a be easier or harder since some deadly six members tend to just have a word that's associated with them as a name that just has a Z shoved in front
You can also make them vastly different then the ones we've seen. This doesn't mean she is a weakling pushover as she still has some powers that zeti have like super strength and magnetism manipulation
Plus, it could be a good way to expand on the species as a whole. I mean of SEGA is never going to give us anymore lore of the zeti then it's up to fans to work with what we have

*sweats in making a black cat OC
(Reason behind it is black cats are often associated with Halloween, Friday the 13th, death, etc. So I wanted to incorporate that in my OC Cloak!)
If your generic species OC has a unique design, then it’s fine
@EnderBoy_11 Does Kitty Softpaws with yellow eyes count as that's basically what Cloak looks like-
That has to be the only Sonic oc tutorial I approve of so far, as someone who has the biggest Sonic oc arsenal, years of experience, and too much time in their hands.
EDIT: except the name part
Sonic characters naming conventions are based after what they do/are
Sonic is fast, Tails has two tails, shadow is dark, Blaze make fire, Cream&Vanilla are sweet, their chaos also match their owners! Cream&Cheese, Vanilla&Chocolat! Etcetc
Personally, my ocs end up with names like Bash the bear, but it's actually not that hard to be creative with these. There's certainly a thousand clever names you could come up with.
Yeah they usually have a very clear connection to the character's theme, with Sonic OCs the name tends to be the very last thing I decide on because having most else fleshed out helps with ideas
@@TurtleCraftZ1
Same, that's also how I go about it.
I have 3 Sonic OC ideas in my head and I have to just draw them out now.
Great video !
My first Sonic OC was a magic raccoon with power coming from the bands on his tail
I’m making a fan character who is a solenodon! Since the irl animals look similar, I’ll be using clutch the opossum from the IDW comics as a basis for his design! Also working on a pangolin. Gonna make a sonic heroes style team with them

i will keep tip 5 in my toughts as i design my new sonic oc and this are the greatest tips video ive seen and tip 6 might i add is any types of colour media will be good but i tend to stay away from markers you can use posca paint pens as long its on arcylic paper and not the regular paper because it will seep through the paper and your oc will be ruined

I didn't want to go full out on clothes since most of the designs mostly gloves and shoes, so a basic set of gloves and some unique boots of sort was easy to come, for species, Coyotes I think are not exactly used as much as one would think, and the name rolls with it, Kori the Coyote has a good ring to it y'know? His color scheme is also just a basic soft blue and green theme, with the only difference being his gloves and boots, which I find is fine, Sonic has the glossy red and white sneakers to contrast his blue fur.
His main Story themeing is based around Little Planet, and unintentionally, his color scheme kinda matches that of color themes in CD, and he can color match with one of the time stones!
His lore is a long process to go through, rather not write it here but I didn't cheap out in it, just know it tries to expand on the Time Stones' placement in the world and how little planet has little lore surrounding it
me,about to type ''pssss nothing personell '' under the video ... him: ''DO YOU KNOW COLDSTEEL''
If you want your characters to stand out, I suggest using vibrant colors :]
Vibrant colors stand out and so do about all the main Sonic characters do. It is super difficult to follow this, and I tried it myself once, it definitely made the difference.
Great Vid!!
My first OC (my PFP lmao, Talon The Hawk) is a Hawk. I've only ever seen ONE Hawk in the Sonic universe. That's Jet.
Tbh we need more Gizoid OCs (I'm making my first oc a Wolf/Gizoid Hybrid, I'm also doing a thing where I try to remember what my Forces Avatar looked like and think how I can change it to where I still recognize it but it's also different enough from the Avatar at the same time!)
step 1: dont make it a hedgehog.
Step 0: don’t name it Sonic
( 5:24 ) yes, Dragons do exist in Sonic. So a Dragon OC is very much plausible.
As far as I know, we only have 2 dragon characters.
Dulcy from Sat AM and Archie comics.
And Trip the Sungazer, when she goes Super.
Do us a favor and fill in the gaps. We need more dragons.
one of my sonic ocs are a mobosaur, a niche mobius-specific species that came out in a 90s archie comic. literally never seen another mobosaur oc, i think they might actually be rarer than human ocs
everyone from divianart takin notes
I have a sonic oc and she's a hedgehog but her theme is the stars, she doesn't remember much but will be the last person ya wanna make mad.•^•, yet i don't have an exact name with her but i want it to be star themed sense she, without her knowing, does come from them.:^
I literally just searched 'Animals with cool abilities' and landed on a Reindeer (they have night vision 👅)
Good to know
Another thing you could do for names:
Put words relevant to the OC theme into google translate and pick either Latin or Japanese.
Half the time, it’ll kinda suck as a name, but you could end up with something pretty good :]
6:51 GODDAMNIT 5 OF MINE
Shade, Spike, Jax, Ash, and Axel for anybody curious but idk if Axel counts since he's not a Sonic OC
Also I named Shade when I was like 9 since my only other Sonic OCs at the time were named Dash and Miley and they were next gen characters and I was an uncreative lil crap that wanted a Shadow clone. Lil bro's original design was Shadow but his quills go down like Sonic and I took away his eyeliner and jet boots and and and uhhh he had weird poofy front hair that took up 1/3 of the page 😭 Dw, now he has even better eyeliner, I gave his jet boots back, changed the highlights to be on the bottom, gave him a more raspberry look, and changed the god-awful front hair to something more chill
Sorry for yapping about my 3rd oldest Sonic OC, have a cookie random stranger ^^ 🍪
my first sonic oc was made in 2016, her name was clara, she was a purple hedgehog, i made a family for her, but then i think she was sonics sister in some way too? in recent years ive changed her to be more reminscent with "sonia" from sonic underground, sort of like my own iteration of that canon.
then in the recent months ive created hedgehog/human hybrid characters, 4 to be exact, excluding another i hav thats deceased.
How to make a good sonic character: make a story about them
i had an idea, that generic sonic ocs are nicknamed 'gadget's to me because they look like sonic forces avatars 😭😭😭😭
from my experience, i design my ocs as if im designing a new main character for sonic. i think as if this character will be canon, and that motivates me to make them extra unique, but not crazy
Cool video
@@sunswift Thanks!
Wish I saw this before spending hours making one
I made some ocs, a meerkat, blue jay, honey badger, crow, grizzly bear, and a komodo dragon
My oc was made in forces lmao XD I had changed it from a wolf to a husky to be more original but I kept changing the design of it
What is the best place to create or put your Sonic OC?
Ah darn. I was gonna do a bear lol
“Before most of you were alive” *showing 2007*
Fuck im getting old…
I almost do thad ngl 9:26
(The only inspiratión it's the power (fire whispon) the fur color and the shoes)
Another tip for the name: You can also use their character traits for the name for example:
Canon Characters
Sonic = running at Sonic Speed, Tails = 2 Tails, Knuckles = Knuckles
My OCs/FCs
Herexo = Hero + Exe, or Cyrina = Cyan/ Cybernetic
Also, cool video
My Sonic oc is a tenrec and her name is sounds weird cuz her name is Argentina the tenrec lol😅😅😅😅😅😅😊😊😊😊😊😊
I just went after stone types and my native tongue when it comes to naming things
