How does Insta360 X4 compare to Insta360 X3? I compared them side by side for image quality including detail, dynamic range and colors. I also evaluated ease of use and convenience. I also compared the X4 to GoPro Max and Insta360 One RS 1-inch 360. I was surprised not only at the level of detail of the X4 but how the X4 seems to appear more three-dimensional!
Moreover, X4 has higher frame rates available for smoother slow motion and many features to enhance ease of use.
I also tested the X4 for overheating and how long it can record at 8k and 5.7k.
Note: in the comparisons, you can see a line along the stitch line because I was using a multi-camera bracket. Without the bracket there is no line. For example you can see in 5:00 when I was riding down the steps, there was no line because I didn’t use the bracket. I just used the X4 by itself on a selfie stick.
At 07:54, I misspoke 😳 and I meant to say that for video, X4 is the clear winner!

Thanks Insta360! Congrats on an awesome camera!
Thank you for mounting all the cameras together and doing a single take for a REAL reframe comparisons.
Thanks! One issue with the multicamera setup is that the cameras could see a bit of each other and part of the bracket so there are visible lines along the stitch line, but rest assured that the stitch is smooth when I don’t use the bracket such as when I was riding down the steps at around 05:00 of the video.
You’re the best reviewer of 360 cameras. I follow a lot of content creators, but when it comes to 360 I ignore all of them and come straight to you. I know it’s not hype, BS, “sponsored” talking but real in-depth and honest assessment.
Thanks buddy! I really appreciate it.

360 Vroomers, Please make a quick compare video between the X4 at 24p and the RS One 1-inch at 24p!!!!! Thank you.
Very good, EXCEPT your RS One comparison was biasedly unfair. I was disappointed that you did not include the parking garage sign in that comparison, but WORST is that as an experienced Insta360 user YOU KNOW that the RS One 1-inch 6K 30p is NOT recording at the maximum sensor resolution! It is recording at 5888x2944 29.97p), which is a significant resolution drop and loss of sensor real estate. With the RS One 1-inch you MUST record at 24p (or 25p) to use the FULL sensor resolution of 6144x3072 and thus the SHARPEST video that the RS ONE 1-inch can generate.
For those that do not appreciate the difference, please note that video bit rate is expressed as the amount of bits over a range of time (not the amount of bits per frame). which means that the fewer frames recorded over the same range of time means MORE bits per frame. Which is why the RS ONE 1-inch records a much crisper picture/frame at 24p: (1) it is using the full sensor and (2) each frame has a higher bit rate per frame.
... do a frame crop compare of a 24p vs 30p RS ONE 1-inch video to see this.
360 Vroomers, Please make a quick compare video between the X4 at 24p and the RS One 1-inch at 24p!!!!! Thank you.
AND, please tell us that you (secretly NDA) have the Insta360 RS TWO 1.2-inch 8K 360 for testing?!?!?! Emoji wink once for "YES", no emoji for "NO". $999 is OK
Pls download the file. As for the garage sign, I didn’t want the video to be too boring and repetitive that’s why I chose a different part. But see my sample files
@@360vroomers Thank you.
Yes, I have downloaded your RS One 1-inch raw sample and I do see that it is recorded at a lower resolution (5888x2944 @29.97p) than the RS One 1-inch's maximum resolution.
And that is my point, this is NOT the RS One 1-inch maximum resolution.
Still love to see you compare both X4 & RS (side by side) at 24p so that we can see both cameras at their maximum frame quality.
Even the X4 should have a better picture quality per frame when recording at 24p than it does at 30p (because the bit rate per minute will be spread over fewer frames).
Comparing critical shots/frames is not boring for viewers.
@_Oregon_Sunday_Drives_360 ok I’ll do a follow up on 360rumors.com
Awesome review as always, thanks so much for taking the time. With the additional info in the files, do they stand up to a bit of grading now?
Hi Dom. I’m not really much of a colorist and I didn’t edit the x4 shots so that they could be representative of what users can expect. But fwiw: 1. It’s a higher bitrate: 200mbps h265 vs around 130mbps for x3. It seems to have noticeably less compression. 2. It has a wider dynamic range and has more detail in shadows and highlights. 3. The colors are more accurate to begin with. So I believe it will be easier to edit than x3. As for 1 inch 360, hmm hard to guess. Perhaps you can download the sample and let me know your thoughts as a professional videographer. 🙏
@@360vroomers Hey buddy, finally got around to downloading the clips - SO helpful to have these for a side-by-side comparison, TY, you rock! The higher bitrate is definitely beneficial - still not ideal, but definitely gives more scope to grade and push things around a bit. Interesting that the auto exposure is so different between the 2 cameras. The 1-inch has very little detail in the shadows whereas the X4 has clipped highlights and a tonne more info the darker areas. It feels like there a lot of noise in the X4 (given that this is a daytime shot) but I think that's because there's so much more detail - on the 1-inch some of the noise and compression artefacts are just being 'mushed' away. I might give the X4 clip a run through Topaz AI to see what that looks like next. Personally I hate clipped highlights so it'll be interesting to see how the shadow detail looks on the X4 when protecting those. Thanks again!
Yes I’m glad x4 opted for more detail even if it has more noise. As for exposure, I agree it seems to be brighter than other cameras so I think it may benefit from a slight adjustment to protect the highlights.
do you think we will soon have other 8k 360 prosumer (
I think next one is qoocam ultra but who knows when it will be released 🤷. As for canon id love to see it be released but in this economy i dont know if canon would prefer to wait.

Fantastic review! I’m still shooting with the original OneX but might need to upgrade soon. I noticed seeing a lot of the stitch line in these comparisons which is something I don’t typically see on my current camera. Is that due to beta firmware, proximity of cameras or lens guards? Or is that just the stitching we can expect on the X4? Thank you so much! Your reviews are the most informative, unbiased and succinct! Thanks for your work!
Thanks Danny! In the comparisons, you can see a line along the stitch line because I was using a multi-camera bracket. Without the bracket there is no line. yup fixed!!!
So I see how amazing this is for all the stuff your doing. Does anyone have a video of and POV up close and like a presentation mode?
Or is that where the reframing comes in?
I'm not sure what you mean by presentation mode, but with reframing you can show any perspective you want. I have a tutorial for insta360 studio if you'd like to take a look: th-cam.com/video/rwt7rBWNBkM/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the comparison!
Glad you found it helpful!
Thanks so much for those file comparisons. That's much better in my mind from x3 to x4. I do wish they had made the sensor larger but the output files speak for themselves on the upgrade.
Thanks! Yes the image quality jump is quite significant. On top of the higher frame rates etc.
@@360vroomers I noticed when you got thru the tunnel to the wood chips, that was a huge difference. And then the plaque on the side - you could actually read the text from the X4 vs the X3 lower quality. Thanks again, that was exactly what I wanted to see from a test. I would love to see a test from single lens quality as well but I'm sure it will be the same. Got to put my x3 for sale now. :). Wish Insta360 had a trade in program.
@@ToddDouglas1 glad it was helpful Todd!
The X4 still suffers from two major problems that "could" be fixed with a firmware update: 1.) 200Mbp/s HEVC is still WAY too low for 8k. Adding 50Mbp/s more would be a significant improvement! Make a "high" 250+Mbp/s mode. 2.) Noise reduction is WAY too heavy and it's scrubbing the details out of the image and making it look like WAX or PLASTIC. They need to offer a noise reduction "low" option and allow noise, texture and DETAIL back into the image! This would allow us to clean it more carefully in post with WAY better results than in-camera noise processing. Insta360....PLEASE fix these two problems in firmware.
Thanks for the feedback! I’ll share with insta360.
How does this compare to the Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch 360 Edition? I'm confused now as to which one I should buy. I've been wanting to get one of these 360 cameras for several years now. I'm assuming all of these can take still 360 photos as well.
As shown in the video, x4 is sharper and has better shadow detail, while 1-inch 360 is better for low light.
The external audio adapter, does that output stereo OR mono like the previous adapters?
(I use the Rode Wireless Go)
I always found mono to be terrible on my previous OneR.
The mic adapter is stereo but it sounds like mono to you because i am guessing you have only one Rode transmitter and are using split mode so you are hearing sound coming on only the left channel. Instead, on your Rode receiver, hold down both small buttons and it will change to merged mode. In merged mode, the sound from the transmitter will be recorded on both left and right channel. I did this with my Rode wireless go 2 and the sound can be heard on both left and right channel. I hope this helps!
can quest2 replay 8k monoscopic 30fps in h265 200mbits/s from insta 360 x4 ? ( quest2 specs says it only supports 100mbits/s in h265 for 8k)
I don’t think it can but you can try the sample file I uploaded.
@@360vroomers the 2gb sample file from x4 is only 100mbit/s, is it because it is only one of the 2 lens capture so 200mbit/s total for the 2 lenses ? at 3840x3840 pixels this makes only 29 mpixels total, 8k vr monoscopic is supposed to be 32mpix of data no ? so is it 7.6k upsampled to 8k ? as x4 video is 3.8k square and x3 video is a 2,8k square so we can conclude that it is not the same sensor in x3 and in x4, correct ?
Finally looking as good as a normal action camera after 360 cropping
Exactly!!! When I saw the image quality for the first time I thought wow no need to use action cam anymore!

You don’t need to set all those keyframes at 3:18. Just turn off World Lock, set a single keyframe on yourself, and it will stay on you
It’s not precise enough.
@@360vroomers Gotcha - "not being precise enough for this specific side-by-side comparison shot" is different from "not able to do it at all," which that part implies. It comes across as a little misleading for the purpose of making Insta360 look better, even if that's not the intention here. FYI
@@BayAreaMotorcycleCommuting I see what you mean. The truth is that the disable world lock trick is something I often try (including with this one) but almost never satisfactory to me. So I almost always end up keyframing.

Is the GPS overlay function only available on this camera or can it be used on x2 or X3?
Insta360 stats is available on x3 and x2 as well but you’ll need a smartphone or insta360 gps remote. I don’t think they got the license to use Apple Watch or garmin devices for x2 or x3.
@@360vroomersThe Garmin Connect with many Garmin watches and overlays work with most Insta360 cameras as of December 2023.
Video features are nice, but photo-part is disappointing, I have expected a bit more.
Why haven't you used the Qoocam 3 in this compare?
Didn’t have time and my bracket could only fit 4 cameras.
yes question. I use my X3 mostly for making instagram and facebook reels, 9 x 16 format. I think max rez supported is 1080, so for me really no benefit in upgrading to X4?
Even if your content is 1080, x4 still has advantages. First you can reframe the shot more tightly while still having good detail. Second, x4 has new high frame rate modes such as 5.7k60, 4k100, bullet time at 5.7k120 etc. so you can get slow motion shots that are more detailed or have smoother slow motion. Third, this is more subjective but I like the colors of the x4 better, and I think x4 seems to “pop” more. You can try the sample files for download so you can see if it makes sense for the way you use it.
I have the 1" One RS. I don't use it underwater or for extreme sports, only for travel.
Would it be better for me to change it to the X4? Is it worth the better quality having 2 half-size sensors?

Hi sorry I misspoke! I meant the clear winner for video is x4
Great review. I just ordered X4.
Thanks and congrats! Let me know if you have any questions!
An unstated advantage is it also does away with having to own 2 action cameras. A 360 and a traditional 180 action camera. Sure, a 180 will always have better resolution but at 8k for a 360 camera the detail will be more than sufficient to warrant not having to buy a 2nd camera.
True. It’s detailed enough that it makes me feel I don’t need a traditional action cam unless the shooting is really going to be rough and there’s a high chance of damage.
Can i flueendly reframe it, on an M1 MacBook or Pixel 8?
I don’t have either so I can’t be sure. But you can try the sample files in the description.
Why does the X4 not support LOG, but the X3 does? Overheating issue?
X4 has a mode called flat which is similar to x3 log mode.
How does the 4k at 120fps compare to 8k30fps I would like to see that side by side comparison
Hi Jesse. The 4K is much less detailed than the 8k mode but it's far more detailed than x3 3k100
I find it hard to believe that the X4 sensor is better than the 1 inch? is this a hardware issue? This is what I am thinking. So there seems there may be a new 1-inch 360 coming.
I know it’s hard to believe. X4 is higher resolution and also has better dynamic range, most noticeably in shadow detail. It’s indeed a sensor issue. The x4 sensor is much newer. But because 1-inch 360 is much larger, it is still better in low light.
Oh Mic ) thanks for test it is amazing) I was sure that 1 inch is not for change camera but for me incredibly idea mode for one r/s ) how I love their idea r/s I think my r/s uniq idea )) so happy to have r/s )))

@360vroomers Sure thing, rare to find good camera reviews from a EUC perspective, already have the Ace Pro and Ill probably upgrade from my X3 this summer when I get back on the road again.
Wait, did you say the X4 doesn't have RAW photo mode?
It has raw in single shot mode. In HDR photo mode there is pureshot but I didn’t see raw in this firmware version.
@360vroomers Okay great thanks. RAW in single shot is important to me so that's great.
The no gaps at 30 minutes is huge. So to confirm, at the 30 minute mark it still splits the footage, but when you line it up there's no frames missing between clips?
Correct. It makes multiple files but as long as you load them all in insta360 studio, it will combine them all automatically with no gaps.
Good review Mic.
Thanks Loren!
Soo.. what about for virtual tours? Better than ONE RS 1-inch?
For photos, no I would probably get theta z1 or Trisio instead.

the in-camera stitching is used for the me mode at 2.7k 30fps or less. It's smooth
@07:55 did you mean to say the X3 is the clear winner? Or X4?
Hi sorry yes I misspoke! 😅 I meant to say X4 is the clear winner for video.
Are the file sizes now much larger as well ?
Yes. An X4 file that is 1 min 22 secs was 2.1GB. An X3 file of the same scene with 1 min. 25 secs was 1.2GB.
Michael, check the release firmware v1.0.6. You can set shooting parameter in TimedShots and on the image modes you can select to record "PureShot + RAW", which then also saves a DNG.
Hi yes I’m using 1.0.6. You can use raw when shooting normal photo. But in HDR photo mode the only options right now are INSP and Pureshot. I’ve asked insta360 to add Raw in the future.
@@360vroomers Ah, I must have missed the reference to HDR photo in your video. Sorry, was disturbed. But I don't expect RAW to come, at least not with bracket shots. X4 is more equal to AcePro in some parts than to X3. By that HDR is done in the sensor.
Oh btw, if you want to switch the save type at the camera, you will only see Pureshot. INSP/JPG for HDR photo is only an option in the app, and I expect it to be removed from the app.
But let's see.
@pk360de X3 had HDR raw (up to 9-shot bracket) so actually X4 can do it but insta360 said they just merged the image in the camera so they thought raw was unnecessary. I told them it is very important for photographers and I believe they will add it back shortly.
The inclusion of the "AI" chip from the Ace Pro means that the X4 has a trick that the RS 360 1-inch doesn't have. The chip is making denoise and adjustments in camera. Just got an X4. Looking forward to comparing it to my RS.
Congrats on getting the x4! Let me know how you like it!

Is the lens border much blurry than the center ?
X4, x3 and 1-inch are sharp all the way to the edge of the lens. Max is more detailed in the middle than the edge of the lens.
Rhanks and what is the raw capture resolution of each fisheye ? Is it 2.8kx2.8k or 5.7kx5.7k

@@360vroomers is it a 48mpix sensor in x3 &x4 ? is the image processing chip of x4 a ambarella cv5 chip ?
@@amanieux insta360 didn’t reveal the sensor or processor. But i believe the sensor is quad bayer.
All the image quality analysis,. but you didn't tell us about that lens/stitch line/lighting/outline of the lens / whatever it is, that sticks out like a sore thumb in most of the shots... is it stitch line, can it be overcome? Still a great a video, and as a small channel i understand the need to get a video out at the right time, and while your review is still prob one of the best, i really wish that would have been addressed.
The line that you see is from the multi camera bracket. If you use a normal selfie stick and just the x4 then the stitching is perfectly smooth. For example in the slow motion scene at around 5:00 where I was riding down the steps, you don’t see any line because I was shooting with x4 by itself.
I would guess the new version for the 1-Inch will be announced in time for the holidays.
Insta360 is always working on new cameras. But it’s hard to guess what is their next one. Imho this economy is not the best time to release a high end product such as a successor to the 1 inch 360.
Can I use X3 batteries w x4?
Sorry no the batteries have different shapes. X4 batteries don’t work on x3 and vice-versa.
@@360vroomers thank you
So what's really new there: new CPU + new battery (heavy, big body!) + changable lens protection (worse image quality with them). Was expecting new image sensors with higher resolution for photo and better sensivity, thinner body to make stiching even better. And was hardly waiting for GPS inside! Not this year :(
For photos it doesn’t offer anything new other than 11k Timelapse. But the improvements to video are substantial.
Why does it have such a noticeable stitch line it's almost black in color when you are riding around with it
Oh that’s only because I was using a multi camera bracket with 4 cameras at the same time. Without the bracket, the selfie stick is invisible.

Sorry no that part is a video clip from insta360. I’m the guy riding the electric unicycle in the video and I’m in California.
@@360vroomers I thought you were in Japan!! I bought the 360×4 a week ago. Until now I only used GoPro and I think the 360×4 is much better in every aspect. I live in Tokyo, I am Cuban and thanks for the video it was interesting
@RoppongiCrossing congrats! I totally agree x4 is much better for most people. Congrats again and let me know if you have any questions!
I'd buy the X4 in a heartbeat if it was good in low light.
What do you think of the low light samples I showed?
If you just short content creator that not focus on cinematography, X3 is enough i think
You mean like TikTok or TH-cam shorts? If the resolution is limited to 1080 then I agree x3 is enough.
I just want a good 180 Stereoscopic camera at this price range and high resolution. My MiSphere is still going strong its sad they never bothered to make a new version of that camera.
I’d love to see a camera like that. For now, the best option for stereoscopic is the qoocam ego. As for mi sphere, if you use it for photos, check out Trisio. Much more detailed.
The X4 has removed Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB). I am so disappointed as it was the main thing I used in the X3. I wasted my money upgrading
I agree that is important and sorry I didn’t test it. I’ll ask insta360 if they can bring it back. Have you tried the HDR photo mode, which may be able to export the bracket as individual exposures in insta360 studio?
@@360vroomers I tried it. There is no option to export the individual exposures even in the desktop studio.
I am disappointed by the removal of this feature too.
@@360vroomers Did they respond?
@@VHSfx they said they would fix it but they didn’t give a date
@@360vroomers Thank you. Glad to know it's coming. I'll keep hold of my X4
Can I do blue line street view at 11k?
Good question. Let me check.
Great video, must have been a lot of work to make !
Thanks Mathieu! Yes it was a lot of work especially the gopro max which I had to keyframe manually. And actually I made several tests. The first tests were on cloudy days. It was only Sunday when the sky cleared up for a couple of hours, which was enough for me to get the final test footage. 😁🍀
You kept saying x3 at the end of the video did you mean x4?
Sorry yeah x4 was the clear winner for video. For photo you can save money and go for x3.
Why is the selfie stick visible in most of these shots?
Good question. It’s because I used a multi camera bracket and the cameras could see each other and a bit of the bracket. Rest assured that in normal shooting, there’s no visible stick as in 05:00 when I used the x4 by itself.
@@360vroomers That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. Great video!
@GoTocco anytime!
Just bought it off of your affiliate link! Insta360 brand camera #10 for me! (And I still can't get a dang t-shirt to be a walking billboard of free advertising for them, go figure)
Thanks Pete!!! I🙏 I’ll see what I can do about a shirt!
@@360vroomers Cheers mate!
In camera stitching? Would that mean that paired with a GPS signal (phone) it can be easily used as Google Street View camera?
Edit: Oh, it's limited to 2,7k ... bummer.
Yes and it’s in me mode which is hemispherical.
Vs KanDao QooCam 3 please
Next time! Or maybe I’ll wait for qoocam ultra 8k.
Thanks for the indepth comparison. While the improved detail is great if all the shots have God awful lens stitching as displayed in your comparison it doesn't matter the video is unusable. It was very distracting and I was baffled that you never mentioned it. The X4 stitching was far and away the worst of all the cams you compared. Yikes.
In the comparisons, you can see a line along the stitch line because I was using a multi-camera bracket (the cameras could see each other and part of the bracket). Without the bracket, there is no line. For example you can see in 5:00 when I was riding down the steps, there was no line because I didn’t use the bracket. I just used the X4 by itself on a selfie stick. I put this note in the description and the pinned comment though in retrospect I should have mentioned it in the video.
I sell cameras… you can’t compare apples to oranges. You should preface with a 4k to 4k and then provide apples 🍎 to oranges 🍊. I’m more interested in X4 vs Gymbal on the DJI 3😊
I agree you should compare cameras to competitors from the same class. That’s why I compared the X4 to the X3, GoPro Max and 1-inch 360. They are all 360 cameras.
As for the pocket 3, it’s a very different camera from the X4. Each can do several things that the other cannot do.
Did they fix Overheating ???
For 5.7k30, i didn't see any overheating. for 8k, it overheated after almost 1 hour. i talked about it in the video.
usually they release insta X version on September once every 2 years, why now they released it early in April.. strange
Maybe to catch NAB? I don’t know
@@360vroomers maybe gopromax2 will release or new dji360 will release soon, so insta wants to start first.
@@lolo_gogo could be. Gopro stock is falling like a rock so I think gopro has to release a max this year or never.
Why I really hate Insta? I bought my x3 just 2 months ago. Everybody said that Insta releases their cameras in every autumn. No roadmaps like at Apple, Samsung. So,now I have a new x3 for the same price as the x4.
Ok it is true that they usually have a release in sept but whoever told you that they release only in sept was a bit reckless. I don’t make reckless statements like that. I know insta360 has released some cameras early in the year. Sometimes they have more than two releases within a calendar year.
@@360vroomers Of course, they can release as many products as they want but it would be nice to see some roadmap. When Xiaomi released the Mi13 they announced the Pro and Ultra at the same time. I knew that I just have to wait a month to buy the Pro. For Insta: ???
Just seen your sample files. And I can't see where is 8K??? In comparison with X3 I can see only better dynamic range but not details! I think it's not true 8K..
The 8k resolution is the one in the folder called x4. Did you zoom in the image? You can see it is a lot more detailed compared to x3. Is it “true 8k”? The 8k is spread out over 360 degrees so the resolution you see when reframed is lower than an 8k non-360 camera.
@@360vroomers I'm a professional in 360 video shooting and post-production for a 9 years. We have Pro, Pro2, Titan, Qoocam 8K and RS 1inch. So I know what you are you talking about. But I've exported your samples into ProRes and zoomed in. And I see only very big improvements in dynamic range and a little bit in details. But it's not enough for 8K. It looks like 6.5K.
At 7:57 you said, the X3 is the clear winner, but you was meant to say the X4... best regards from Germany, Rudi
Danke! My mistake 😂
@@360vroomers you're welcome
So you say that the X3 is the clear winner?
Hi sorry I misspoke! I meant for video x4 is the clear winner
@@360vroomers Thank you for the clarification!
looks good as hell
Yes very impressive image quality!

Thanks for being on the money with your view! :D
@@360vroomers now it's time for me to finally retire my original OneX and get this one
Great review as always. Thank you.
Thank you very much! I’m glad it was helpful!
No gap when recording long videos, confirmed?
Confirmed! It will create multiple files but if you open all the files in studio, studio will automatically link them with no gaps.
@@360vroomers Great improvement! Can the mobile app handle exporting as a single file, or only on desktop?
@@subethasoftware the mobile app was able to handle the single file and reframe it up to 4k. Pls check the phone compatibility list to confirm your phone meets the requirements.
