Yes! Rusty Cage! One of the most underrated riffs in any rock music, let alone 90s grunge.
I can't call Soundgarden a grunge band. They did so much more than that for rock.

    • @aptfx
      @aptfx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Its actually a bit funny to call something "just a grunge band" if all of the big grunge bands had such a great influence on music. Grunge certainly was just an easy widespread moniker for a group of different bands growing out of the alternative and sub culture scene into mainstream music. Like all things getting mainstream they got and get a lot of hate - but hey - if we see young people (like Ayla) so many years later rocking to that tunes its quite clear that it was a milestone era.

There is no specific grunge sound, it was just a movement they were all part of, it’s why the big 4 AiC/SG/PJ/Nirvana all sound completely different but are all called grunge bands. It wasn’t like an actual genre it was just like a media given name for the Seattle scene that was happening. Bands like AIC float across multiple genres.

So much amazing guitar out of the 90s. Mike McCready and Stone Gossard remain underrated as one of the best twin attacks in rock history. The band gets a lot of play but the individuals rarely do. Glad to see Stone getting some kudos, here :) I'm a huge student (and child) of grunge. This was a satisfying video to watch, even without a guitar nearby. Two other 90s bands that you might enjoy looking into, musically, are Toad the Wet Sprocket and the Sundays. Toad's musicality is sorely overlooked and the Sundays were possibly the pinnacle of emotive Britpop, going places the Smiths first attempted to build... Then laying small cities upon those foundations in just 3 albums. Anywho: love your work. Thanks for all you do.

@@jimmycve well, no need to ask Billy then since you seem to think being from Seattle is the only qualifier for being called "grunge", LOL.

Alice in Chains - Bleed The Freak
    Smashing Pumpkins - Geek USA
    Soundgarden - 4th of July
Alice in Chains - Them Bones
    Kyuss - Gardenia

    • @hansgettheflammenwerfer69420
      @hansgettheflammenwerfer69420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

4th of july is so beautiful! You've made some great choices and I'm going to follow your lead and name my top 5 90's grunge riffs:
I won't define riff, but I will say that my top 5 were chosen because they're catchy riffs, they're recognisable, they evoke that 90s emotion through tone or effects. With that said:
      1. Melvins - Honey Bucket
Tell me the chug right after the intro isn't perfect! And they inspired the entire "grunge" genre. How could this, from their major label debut, not be included?
      2. Nirvana - Come as You Are
the chorus pedal, the melody, the fuzz. Perfect 90s.
      3. Mudhoney - Touch Me I'm SIck
(Bah bah! banananan! Bah bah! Banananana!) Mudhoney are the quintessential grunge band. And this riff is loud, abrasive and catchy. Also, EHX Big Muff Pi. They weren't the only band to use this pedal. Smashing Pumpkins definitely popularised it, but there's a reason Mudhoney made t-shirt designs featuring the pedal.
      4. Soundgarden - Fell on Black Days
I honestly think this is a better riff than other contenders. Its prime 90s Chris Cornell and Kim Thayill.
      L7 - Pretend We're Dead
I think people don't recognise the impact of women-only (or mostly women membered) bands in the 90s. Violent Femmes, L7, Bikini Kill. And then add in other influential figures like Kim Gordon and Courtney Love. Women were as big a part of the grunge scene and areforgotten far too quickly. This song isn't good because its written and played by women, its good because its damn good, unequivocally 90s grunge.

I wonder how Billy would react if he heard he was "an extremely cool 90's shredmaster". Haha!
(He'd be annoyed as he always is and then explain for about an hour why he's not a shredmaster and what he thinks about the youth today in comparison to his upbringing, trauma trauma trauma etc.)
But he is one hell of a songwriter, for sure!!! Love him

Although, people have missed it after the show either because they took the wrong exit on the way out or it’s not in a noticeable area. There’s no announcement either about it. I like "Zero," but I maybe would have gone with either "Cherub Rock" or "Rocket." I'm really a "Siamese Dream" guy when it comes to the Pumpkins. I don't think they ever bettered that album. The guitars on that record are the biggest guitar sounds I've ever heard. Layers and layers of Strats into Big Muff'd-out Marshalls. The harmonics in "Zero" are fun to play, though. :) I'm sure people will complain that SP aren't "grunge," but we were listening to them at the same time as Nirvana, AIC, PJ, Mudhoney, & Soundgarden, ect. Same with Helmet, Tool, Kyuss, L7, STP and other "grunge adjacent" bands.

Yeah nah. For one - STP can't really be considered "grunge". For another Spoonman is way too late in Soundgarden's history to be an "iconic" riff, SLTS is so obvious, and actually is not really Nirvana's greatest work. Jerry Cantrell's guitar work in AIC is definitely best exemplified by Man in the Box - that's why everyone does tutorials on it. And Hail Hail? For real? Why not Yellow Ledbetter? Personally I'd maybe have something like State of Love and Trust or maybe Once or Why Go for Pearl Jam, if I was gonna pick a different PJ song .

When I figured the Man in the Box solo, I used the 10th fret on the fourth string instead of the fifth fret of the third. I realize this is the same note, but I seem to use my little finger in cases like this ( and also step down, hitting the ninth fret before going to the seventh). Is there a reason for using the fingering that you do for better vibrato? It is little things like this that just make me wonder. Thanks for a really good video. I am always appreciative of your feel when playing. You make it seem to flow so nicely.

Main reason would probably just be that the way she showed is how Jerry Cantrell actually plays it...?

Good selection of 90s music, but I was surprised you didn't go with Spoonman for Soundgarden!

I was thinking Outshined. Soundgarden has some fantastic riffs.

I'll be waiting for another 5 grunge riffs and other not si grunge or post grunge riffs, like: Shine (collective soul), today (smashing pumpkings), cannon ball (Breeders) and Violet (Hole)

She went and chose some difficult ass rifts. Minus Man in the box these are all hard to play. Impressive.

thanks for mentioning the melvins song in regards to milk it... ive never heard that... it has like 4 riffs/motifs that nirvana used in it / made their own including the florish riff of love buzz (which is a cover in its self) and a 'hair spray quee'n vibe too. and of course similar milk it vibe/riff on the bass part.. i only gave it 2 quick listins...

“Free As A Bird,” released by the Beatles in 1995, was considered by some to be sounding like grunge music.

I'm almost 40 yo, but in the 90`s I don`t remember calling bands weren't from Seattle as grunge bands. Cool video tho

I think you missed one really great rift in, no rain- blond melon. While they're totally grunge and are really on known for that song, they have some songs that rival the grunge greats.
