Have a black bamboo, since 2016, no idea official name. It flowered this year and totally went to seed. Cut off all of the culms, so sad, was 30 feet high. We have new shoots lots of them, so wondering if it will come back…
I have 'Bory' in Northumberland ... last year 1 culm flowering ...this year - the whole plant! Also have several stands of 'Megro' no sign of flowering.
Thank you for your videos. I can report that our p. nigras here in Oregon USA are all flowering and "going to seed." I'm assuming they will die off. I am not too upset about them dying off because we just have a few in pots. My interest was piqued by mention of the life cycle before flowering being in the range of 30-60 years. Where (if info exists) can I find out what the life cycle time is for various bamboo species and when different species are predicted to go to seed? Some places mention that to be a mystery. Really?

We cut ours to the ground in May, and now we have 2' - 3' high shoots, skinny with leaves but no flowers. Do you think I should keep these shoots or cut them as well and not let anything grow until next spring?
Hi. I have the same issue here in WA. old growth is flowering and when cane is cut back shoots are rising - skinny w leaves but no flowers- should they be left alone or just get rid of it
@@gayescheel8279 With ours, it all looks so healthy (the new growth) that I plan to leave it until next season and see if any bigger/fatter shoots appear, and if so, cut out all the skinny new shoots.
Mine flowered 2 years ago, 12 ft tall dead sticks since. I injured myself & couldn't sort it out. Got a guy to chop down to it's base two months ago. I now have 2ft skinny shoots. I watered well to encourage in August. It's the end of September here now. Not sure they'll survive winter in UK but fingers crossed. 😊
I have phyllostachas nigra, its a few years old and is growing like its on steroids, lots of huge new canes/ shoots, no sign of flowering though. If its going to possibly flower this year when should i expect to see evidence, mid summer or autumn etc?
Seems like all the people reporting flowering as in climates that actually get a decent freeze and are non-native bamboo climates. Here in Florida our black bamboo is not flowering as of Spring 2023
Okay pretty important question as I only saw this after starting to germinate my black bamboo seeds. This was 8 months ago now, would it be okay for me to be starting seeds at this time? I don't know much about bamboo but I would assume a sprouting wouldn't attempt to flower so early, am I wrong? I just don't want these seeds to potentially be wasted if possible, thank you in advance for any response!
I wondered about buying very small one - 2L or less even - on the grounds that it might be too small / young to attempt to flower, and thus might survive the global flowering, but no idea if that is likely to be the case - either way, a cheap experiment!

@@YorkshireKRIS I see nobody sells them. Thats probably the issue! Its an extremely fast growing grass, youd seed them in trays when you see it dying off and by the time theyve seeded, the prior seeds have grown ready to plant. At least this is what you do with stuff like parsley and other biannuals. Sorry for my ignorance!
@@YorkshireKRIS yes looking into it they only flower every 30 years or longer! it was a fantastic opportunity to develop rare seeds and improve genetic diversity. perhaps they dont have pollinators in the uk so would need to be done by hand. its also possible theyre not self fertile, and if every plant is a clone thats a recipe for disaster. regardless flowering is definately a good opportunity at least! i am seeing a cornish seed provider though and seemingly its 2 years till it can go outside which is extremely fast for a cold hardy large plant.

So I got Portuguese black bamboo (not sure which subtype), in 2021. I grew the seeds this year- seedlings are about 8 Mo old. So in WA state US, they’ll still likely flower in the next 18 Mo? What about the seeds? If I hang onto them and plant later would it not matter because of the stock they came from? Ugh….
This shouldnt be an issue for plants from seed. My understanding is it's all of the ones from the previous generation that has been growing for years and came from one plant.
My 10 year old black bamboo is looking very sorry for itself. Lots of leaf drop despite being well watered and fed. There are new canes developing so I am still hopeful of some recovery but it has never looked so bedraggled.
Our p. nigras is also flowering (Washington, USA). We have about 4 bamboo types planted by the last owner on our lot and this black stalk one is only one I actually like of course. Has anyone tried pruning off the flowers?? Ours isn’t very large so I thought I’d try and see how it goes 🤷🏻♀️.
It only flowers every 60 yrs cool fact every plant from same plant no matter where those plants are located in n the world all cuttings from mother plant will also flower .. last time black bamboo flowered was 2008

In Australia - Spring 23 and mine has started flowering now. 20 yrs old.
Ours flowered in early autumn 2022. Devastating to see it all die . It was six very large clumps 10 ft tall😢

My Yacolt Washington 15-18 year old black bamboo is looking great but not flowering. The birds love it and it obscures my shop.

I bought a black Bamboo not sure what name it is last year No flowers on it and it's growing really well.

If growing from seed then that'll be the next generation so that'll be fine.

You need to choose a species that grows to the height you require.

Why is there now a 'global flowering'?
Mine isn't flowering but it wasn't very healthy. Might that save it? It is throwing more shoots up than ever this year though.
It's highly likely that all will flower in the next year or two unfortunately

Would the Fargesia species with black Canes i.e. Black pearl, Vampire and Volcano be worthy alternatives to the Phyllostachys species. Thanks Kris.

I have Timor Black Bamboo. Will it survive zone 8b in USA?
Timor black bamboo has a completely different flowering cycle compared to P nigra, however it's also a tropical bamboo so it's not very hardy
I got phyllostachis nigra and nigra boryana absolutly no problèm.

Lots of different species will flower from time to time. Some tropical species survive well after flowering

You can prune off flowers but it's very likely to continue to produce more. It's not inevitable that it'll flower itself to death but quite likely
