    I think the biggest problem with Harley Quinn as a cinematic character is they have all this before and after with the joker, but we NEVER really get to see what relationship she had with the joker.
    Plus her being a PhD is never really touched on. She's just instantly a psycho and we are never shown why.

      I agree, it would have been nice to see Joker's manipulation of her over his time at Arkham. So we see how she cracked; ruining her own career and reputation for him.

    I generally liked BoP as a fun, colorful mess. The problem I had with it was moments that were so unfeasible that they took me out of the experience. One example was when she went into a police station without a real gun, when you know all of those cops had to have real guns on them, and yet no one shot her. It's just so unrealistic. There were several situations like that.

    • @DawnofNerdlife

      @noodleking 92 Yes! When the jail cells opened the criminals seem to attack Harley for the sake of a fight sequence. Like leave...you're criminals and another criminal accidentally freed you. And has made a mess of the police station. Thank her and run.

      No offense but have you ever seen a super hero movie before? You're complaints are the backbone of superhero films. Do you know how long the winter soldier would have lasted if any of the guys in the elevator had remembered they had guns?

    • @DawnofNerdlife
      @DawnofNerdlife 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @noodleking 92 Yup,bad example. It's completely different from a girl with non-lethal ammo in an open space severely out numbered by cops with REAL guns. And no special powers/enhancements. I'm not saying other super hero movies haven't done equally stupid scenes. But that doesn't excuse Birds of Prey for an over-the-top scene that too heavily breaks the suspension of disbelief.

    • @DawnofNerdlife
      @DawnofNerdlife 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@jeonghansupremacist4354 Where does the film justify this? I know Harley is an unreliable narrator, but as we see a bunch of things in the film Harley couldn't possibly know and that were not colored by her narration. We can assume the film has her voice as narrator but not her forced perspective. Therefore, nothing in the film supports the glitter bomb gun as a delusion. If that's what they were going for, they failed. So just another failure.
      Also, I can see Montoya A COP getting past her knocking out a bunch of cops at the station and later on going "I was wrong about you". Essentially realizing Harley is off her rocker in a lot of ways, but mostly harmless. But I can not see her getting over Harley shooting cops in cold blood for the selfish reason of retrieving the diamond. And if the glitter bombs were real ammo, she shot an innocent cop, just doing his job, in the face.

      I agree...until now. I absolutely loved Zack Snyder’s Justice League. I was beyond shocked by how much I loved it.
      The reason Birds of Prey didn’t get a good turnout is because the feminist director decided to make Harley Quinn look as awful as possible. Dumb hair, dumb clothes, and (haven’t seen the movie) the trailer made her come across like Lucille Ball on crack.
      We all know that the reason we liked HQ in Suicide Squad was because of how awesome she looked. That is the Harley we want. Even straight white females, like myself. Looks like that is the Harley we’ll get in the new Suicide Squad, so that’s cool.

    • @SchulzEricT
      @SchulzEricT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@richlasma Birds of Prey made a profit too.
      The more people see the DCU sucks, the less inclined we are to go see their movies; sure, some of the early stuff made more money, but you can't know whether or not you'll like a movie, you can't know whether or not a movie will be good, until *after* you pay for it and see it.
      The more DCU movies there are, the more we see we can't expect them to be good, or even mediocre, so the less willing we are to shell out money to see them. So, the earlier in the cycle a DCU movie was made, the more money it is likely to have made. That has nothing to do with how good it was, more to do with how much of a sample size we had.
      Also, it's hard to imagine that the Coronavirus affected, say, Suicide Squad in the same way it affected Birds of Prey.

    • @SchulzEricT
      @SchulzEricT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Dem Lem's I think that's the small picture problem. The big picture problem is the people in charge have no idea why we love the DC characters and aren't qualified to tell stories that are true to the characters, that resonate with their fans OR that appeal to non-fans by being interesting stand-alone movies.
      Or are incapable of choosing creative people who are qualified to do that; Zack Snyder being the man tapped to helm a Superman movie is a fucking joke; it's so staggeringly stupid, and it set up the DC for failure right out of the gate.
      And every single movie since has been an over-correction to the previous movie's failure.

    I believe it was considered a failure as the production budgeting being 84, usually advertising is roughly 50% to the total the cost of a film. Putting this on the lower end the cost would be about $125 mil. However, the studio does not get all the box office. According to Grace Randolf depending on the country a studio only gets 25-50% of the revenue to go to costs. So it would have been right around the break even point, to a loss.

    I'm a 19 year old male whose actually in the military and I went and saw this movie opening weekend because if nothing else it seemed better than suicide squad based off the same two trailers I kept seeing showing at least some interesting and creative flare to it. Seeing this movie I was disappointed that I had no one other than my girlfriend who I dragged to the theatre with me to talk to about how good it was. It was far better than suicide squad in my opinion and where I didn't like it as much as Shazam I liked that it didn't play things safe the way Shazam did. But I saw it and thought good for DC making another movie that at least didn't make me wanna gouge my eyes out like justice league or bvs. I didn't feel at all alienated by any marketing or even any plot points in the movie as a male audience member and I actually had a blast watching it, I wish there had been more of Harley's character being actually crazy but I also didn't mind seeing more of a focus on the other characters, that was in fact my only complaint, there was a lot of time speant on the kid, almost too much imo, when the other non Harley characters could've really benefited from more screen time and more development. I wasn't upset at any of the costumes in this movie and I was actually okay with this version of black mask, his death was just a little too goofy for me, but otherwise I actually really liked BOP.

    Fans took to twitter and attempted to get people to see the film by trying to get people to not see the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and they tried to do that by making up outrageous claims about the Sonic movie. Thus, a lot of people were turned off and decided to go see Sonic instead.

      Oh yeah that was by far one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. You had all these crazies protesting the movie before it was even released because it was, according to them, "NaZi ProPaGaNdA"...spoiler alert, it wasn't. The protests were effective, in a way. Because of them I went to see Sonic purely out of spite lol, it's a fun family film that I probably wouldn't watch again but enjoyed at the time. As far as I'm aware BoP screenings were mostly empty, probably because of people being called white supremacists for voicing their hesitations about seeing the film/praising Sonic.

    Hey, random guy here:
    I went to see B.o.P. The second weekend it was out (I didn’t know it had come out already the first weekend) and I thought it was alright. My main issues with the film stemmed from it having a passive lead who let the plot happen to them and then reacted to it as opposed to them driving the plot forward (same reason I started enjoying Lion King less as I got older). I do agree that the film relying on Harley took away from it being an actual B.o.P. movie, but I also understand why the filmmakers did that. Also, I’m a huge DC comics fan, I like most of their comic book storylines more than Marvel by a long shot, so I was a bit put off by the movie’s interpretation of Cassandra Cain as she’s my second favorite member of the Batfamily to read about. But like you pointed out, this version of her was necessary for the plot to really work so I got over that pretty quickly. Thought the costumes were fine but I’ve never really cared about costume design as much as other aspects of the movie. I did think Black Mask was wasted by having him die in this movie and not sticking around to be a dick in other films as well. All in all, I gave this movie the same rating I gave Aquaman when I saw that: 7/10 but it would’ve benefitted from being two separate movies. One about the emancipation of Harley and a separate one about the forming of the team

    The marketing killed the movie. When actors use terms like "everyday misogyny" or "male gaze" in interviews look for the boxoffice to start dropping. I agree that the marketing held this movie back. I remember seeing the first trailer and thinking, "okay, Warner Bros has no faith in the Birds themselves, hence all the Harley, so why not just make a Harley Quinn movie?" Then the second trailer dropped and it basically just looked like they made a Harley Quinn movie with the Birds sprinkled in (which is ultimately what it was). It was that lack of faith in the title characters that made me not want to see it and I'm sure others felt the same. Now, I review movies on my show, so I still saw the movie in theaters and I'm glad I did because it was a lot of fun. Was it a perfect movie, no? Could it have used more screen time and development for the Birds? Absolutely, but it definitely deserved a bigger audience than it had.
    And yeah, Sonic opening the following week definitely didn't help. That was a movie that I originally had no intention of seeing, but after the fan outrage caused got the studio to redo the animation (whether the whole situation was a marketing ploy is a debate for another day), I was intrigued. It too was a lot of fun and like you pointed out, not rated R.

      A comment she will never pin because of fragile femininity, thinking people dont want women in films is like 2/3 of the fuel that drives the thing these snowflakes hate, people want women in films, look at alien. A long time ago yes but its because everytime an anti-misogyny film comes out the witing of said female characters are absolute dumpster fires people start to think causation equals correlation

    I loved Birds of Prey, but I love it in the same way I love The Spy Who Dumped Me. It's a female lead, action-packed, funny movie with crazy antics and is loads of fun. And both of those movies needed a lot of help and could have used some better, tighter plot or direction, but I love seeing these women interact and have a good time, so it works for me. Also the marketing for both of these movies as abysmal...

    Sorry but the film was a flop
    First of all, the film's budget was almost near 100Mil after the reshoots (most of the action sequences were in reshoots)
    Also as you said, we don't know the marketing budget so a rough estimate going around is that the film needed to make a little over 250Mil to break even and start making profit and it hardly made 200Mil
    What many BoP stans (not you but those on twitter) can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that you can't just subtract a film's production budget from the box office and call it profit because it doesn't work that way. Cinema owners have their cut of up to 60% of the ticket price in some cases.
    It's a flop period end of story. The only hope it may have is the ancillary market. Other than that the reasons you gave were spot on except one, every guy in this film was a bad guy in some way. Captain Marvel was labeled SJW film even though we had a renowned actor and character with her aka Nick Fury and Talos if you want to count him. Whereas this film had every man being racist, misogynist, a psychopath. Even Harley's father figure betrayer her.
    Edit: Betrayed*

    • @SchulzEricT

      Did you actually see that criticism? Because I have seen that sentiment criticized ad nauseam... but I haven't seen a single person actually say that. Seems like the tail is wagging the dog here, that maybe one person said it and it spread largely because of how dumb it was (and also people have an agenda when it comes to female-led movies, and being able to weaponize a criticism as dumb as that serves their purpose), not because of how common it was.

    Rule of thumb is that marketing and distribution costs about the same as production (this is just for calculation purposes, since studios take in different percentages of the box office based on location and weeks in theaters.) For Suicide Squad, it's a bomb because they spent a lot on marketing, so it might have broken even.

    The general rule of thumb is that in order for a film to be considered "successful" it needs to make at least 2-2.5 times its production budget back.
    BOP made around 200 mil off of a 100 mil budget, its definitely in "Box office disappointment" territory rather than "Box Office Bomb" land.

    The knife in the back was marketing, all the other details like accuracy to the DCU just twisted said knife. As far as being a female led movie, BoP was everything I wanted Wonder Woman to be-- Characterization was womanly without being weighed down by the parameters of what's "lady like." I think that's the biggest mistake that leads to so many female led movies becoming pandering, so I'm just happy BoP crossed that shit out

    Good rule of thumb to calculating the cost of marketing - since they very rarely actually release those numbers - is they typically spend around as much on marketing a film as they spent on the production. So Birds of Prey would have needed to pull in around 170 mil to break even. Which it surpassed. Not by a huge amount, but it still brought in around 30 mil.

    I never did watch the film but seeing that this was released in 2020 made me remember how there were plenty of films released this year but most had such poor marketing and were sometimes just forgettable films anyway that, and you probably guessed it, they ended up being forgotten 3 seconds after release. Like other than the Sonic film I totally forgot about Onward, Scoob, Trolls World Tour, just about every film dropped onto streaming sites, and obviously this film.

China accounts for 20% of the audience for these superhero genre movies and all the theaters in China at the time BoP was released were closed.

    9:56 that's the problem. We know it's pandering to you and we also know that most people don't watch said films that are being pandered to your demographic yet everyone else gets stomped on in the media for disliking the direction of the film and it's pandering elements.
    Our complaint is that if they didn't hate us we would go see these films but they love you more despite the fact that you don't care much for them.
    It's a very toxic relationship we all have with the media.

    When analysing box office you have remember that studios only receive half of the box office (the other half goes to cinemas) so this means that while movies like alita battle Angel(grossing 404 million on a budget of 170 million) look like they make a profit on the surface they actually end up losing the studio money

    I think the “SJW” parts people were talking about was the fact that basically all the men in the movie were objectively bad people, the “man’s world song”, the fact that they changed Victor Zazz’s character from a regular psychopathic killer to only a killer of women. I think it was Jeremy Jahns who said one of the main themes of the movie was “men bad, women good” and black mask’s main personality trait is that he is an over the top mysoginist.

    Another excellent vid. I really appreciate you putting out content while the world is on fire. I'm grateful for the healthy distraction.
    I didn't see "Birds of Prey". It's the kind of thing I would watch if a friend lent me their bluray*. But I can't get up enough motivation otherwise.
    The majority of my film-watching these days is spent looking backwards. I'm an unrepentant believer in "physical media", and find myself watching more and more of my own personal library, particularly older films, regularly "replenishing" it via the many (thank God) excellent producers of quality blurays, like *Arrow Video, Kino Lorber Studio Classics, Twilight Time, Eureka! Masters of Cinema, Powerhouse Indicator, and, of course, The Criterion Collection* ...oh, and Shout Factory. They do good work too.
    Unless it's a director whose work I admire, or unless it's a film everyone is going absolutely bonkers over, I find myself getting less and less excited about new releases. Not that I NEVER get excited. I loved *Avengers: Endgame* for instance. Most of the Marvel films, in my opinion, are brilliant examples of the genre. And I was jumping for joy with my friends when *Parasite* won (deservedly) all those Oscars.
    But, personally, I get way more excited about discovering some random cool old film noir from the late-40's than anything at the megaplex.
    Jesus, I sound old, lol....Bah. It is what it is.
    *Or if I could find a really inexpensive streaming rental option. Like, $3.99.

    Apart that the characters and backstories barely or at all do not match the characters except for Harley and that all the man are portrait like hate woman(The Rene Montoya part is an example) is a clear fact that is not only agenda driven but bad script that do not help the people go to see this movie and its funny that most of the people who go to see the movie are man, you know the persons who as you say hate this movie even before they see it and not for the reason me and other coments give it to you and the declarations that many people involve in the film say...
