  • Men In Black: International, was just an okay movie. It was not, however, a good reboot. In this video I went through some key elements of MIB: International and how they don't work in the movies favor for relaunching the MIB franchise. Have you seen the movie? What did you think? Let me know in the comments section down below!

*IMHO your idea for an origin story and overall concept was so much better than what we were given.*
My interpretation might be a bit off but IMHO the lead felt kind of like a MIB Groupie paired with an insufferable barely competent partner. The script was lazy. It felt like Fan-fiction. I fell asleep several times. granted I have narcolepsy but this time I welcomed narcolepsy with open arms.

The trope of "absurdly-competent female character" is a really persistent one right now. It reads to me as "we want to get the feminist audience so make this character effectively infallible, and make sure its apparent shes better than the men around her"

    • @cinema_cemetery

The funny thing is that’s not even what most feminists want (actual feminists anyway). We want a character with flaws who has to learn and grow. We just want well written characters, lol not “girls are better than boys” because it’s not even true. Everyone is on an even playing field. It’s why I tend to always gravitate towards male protagonists with the occasional exception, because they have much richer and fuller characters.

Is it just me who was taught growing up that whenever it says "men" or "he" in a text, it means everybody? My dad read to me from a children's Bible from like 4 years old and he explained that anytime Jesus said "he" in a story talking about people, He meant everyone, girls and boys. Maybe that's why I've always felt it's weird and unnecessary to go out of your way to change the -man suffix to -woman for every single career choice. I've never felt I couldn't do a job just because the title ended in -man. So that "MEN in Black???" line irritates the hell out of me.

You actually made a great point with that opening to her character. It could have been a struggle she faced all her life to the point where she subjectively villainizes the group in that she doesn’t understand what they do and why it might be important. As she gets further and further involved with the MIB, she starts to understand how it’s a necessary element along with it’s secrecy and thus finds closure in her experience. You see a lot of conspiracy theories and downright animosity towards all sorts of institutions that are based on public ignorance, so it’s not horribly far fetched and can be identifiable. The average Joe doesn’t realize what’s actually going on because they aren’t well versed on the subject, and so they develop mislead opinions which can sometimes go extreme. You could say that vaccinations are a decent example of this issue. A lack of in depth understanding leads to fear and opposition and of course questionable choices at least at some point or another. I haven’t seen the movie and likely won’t even though I grew up with the original MIBs, but it may have taken a slightly darker or just heavier tone which doesn’t seem like they wanted to do. The marketing made it seem more playful, so that’s my best guess. Either that or it was just lazy writing...

“Hard to watch” parts = yup. Poor setup = Yup. Nice critique! Your end comments are interesting, though.
I was at a Comic-con where an actor accused fans of hating Captain Marvel and asked why fans didn’t give it a chance. The actor was surprise when fans answered:
    1) Captain Marvel made over $1B
    2) Captain Marvel has the sixth highest grossing opening of all time (now seventh)
    3) No one in the audience hated Captain Marvel, and most had seen it & enjoyed it
The actor pulled out an iPhone, looked it up, and replied, “Wow. I thought it didn’t do well. It outperformed Justice League, every Thor movie, Joker, Aladdin, multiple Star Wars movies, Toy Story...”
Someone asked if the “Negative Fanboy” news was blown out of proportion as a free-marketing ploy, and added the movie opened better than two Avengers movies, Superman v Batman, Captain America...
I watched Captain Marvel on opening weekend. When I discussed it with friends at work on the following Monday, I was met with, “Oh no. You’re not one of those fanboys about to lay hate are you?” I said, “What? I enjoyed the movie, but what if I didn’t? We discuss movies all the time. Why are you attacking me now before I even begin?” They apologized, and told me they saw more news about “Negative fanboy” posts than actual trailers for the movie.
I’m not saying there weren’t negative fanboy comments that may or may not have been blown out of proportion. I’m saying it’s interesting and unfortunate how it even impacted your very good critique video.

16:53 "What if women were included in this?"
Because that's the problem- They already were included. At no point in time were there a bunch of men in these franchises saying women couldn't join. Many of the franchises, and stories, already included women and were welcome at the start. Like with the Ghostbusters 2016 they made it out to be some kind of boys club when Janine, and other female Ghostbusters, existed way before this movie. Then to paraphrase Red Letter Media, "They're a bunch of shlubby exterminators and con men" if they wanted to 'attack the patriarchy' then they could have picked a manlier franchise. When they relauched the cartoon called Extreme Ghostbusters, they had a female Ghostbuster with blue hair.
So the narrative of: "What if women were included in this?" is bs, because if people were paying attention to the franchise they never weren't included, and nothing keeps them from joining. It's outsiders looking in saying everything is wrong, when there's no issue at all.

" like as actually important leading characters "
Yes. This is what already happened. Marvel, DC, Image Comics and many other big players already do this.
"And it’s pretty rich to say nothing was stopping these fictional women from joining."
Well I was talking about characters and females (IRL) wanting to join the subculture. Like with the Magic the gathering card game its always been open for everyone.
      ".. except the writers...?"

In my opinion, the only way they could’ve possibly made MIB International a bit better was if they kept Agent J (Will Smith) maybe have him take over Agent Zed’s place as the head of the Men in Black or in an equally high rank (Edit: or if Emma Thompson and Will Smiths characters were partners). Or even if he took a mentor/father figure to Agent M like Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) was for him starting out and it would’ve been just full circle connecting them if the writers and director wanted to keep them in the same cinematic universe as the originals.

3:22 Hell, I can already see it: the only ones that remember what happened that night were her father and her. Thanks to an eye condition her father had, he remembered what went down that night, but acts like nothing happened. He reassures his daughter that one day they will get payback for all the pain the MIB have caused their family. Instead of the scene we get her discovering their secret base, have it (at first) go as normal...until she gets close enough to the stand in K, and our protagonist punches her across the face, screaming and cursing at her for all her family went through, thanks to the MIB. Her arc would involve what you just said. Agent H would even be forced to take on more of a support role, and maybe try to get her to loosen up.

Majority of people aren't really mad about a strong female protagonist, it's been done great before...when it was just about having a strong protagonist. It wasn't about the fact they were female, it was that they were admirable and strong. You can be a weak ass person of any gender, mentally and physically... being of that gender doesnt make you strong by default. Its what you do morally. Constantly looking for validation in movies when a female protagonist does something good just gets old and takes away from the impact of the action... not because of any gender, but the obvious pandering

With franchises like The Men In Black that lots of people hold nostalgia for, they tend to get crazier when reboots change things. When this movie's trailer dropped there was whirlwind of rage online that a woman was taking a lead role.
A lot of people hated it before it came out and there were lots of video's/discussions dragging the film and the actress. So while the majority of the world didn't care enough to kick up a storm, there was still a large and vocal group online that did care and expressed a lot of anger that the protagonist was female.

There are so many great female characters, like Ripley, Sarah Connor, Princess Leia...
I like Leia especially, she is brave, always trying to stand up to men around her, doing traditionally male stuff, while not compromising her femininity and not being best at everything. Luke is "stronger in force" than her, Han is physically stronger and more skilled in flying, fighting, etc. And yet, she is still considered "strong female character"

Because I spent the whole movie thinking that agent h was just being obnoxious with describing how he won the other battle and then I realised at the same time as agents h and m that he was neurolised. If anything, for me at least, the movie got that part right.

I avoided this video for a long time. I have been a fan of the men in black franchise literally since I was a small child, it was one of the first movies I ever watched, and it was my first special interest. I loved this movie, I thought the visuals were amazing, and I loved the continued alien creativity, also I loved seeing new main characters (I will always love J and K, but they were getting tired of the franchise, and it would have been sad if they were there tbh, they're too old for this). I cried the first time I saw it, and it felt like such a loving homage to the existing 3 movies. But you made some really solid points, I think you're right about most of it. I also realize my focus is the cinematography and effects, and I have a habit of caring significantly less about the story, and don't always notice that the story is week. I really enjoyed listening to your opinions about it ^^

yeah, that threw me a little too. I was interested to get what is usually a really objective, moderate view on a film I had considered trying to see, to all of a sudden checking if I’d been attacked/“checked”. I’m not sure I was because I’d never heard of anyone freaking out because “Men AND Women (or People?) In Black” had been postulated, but any attempt at social politics/justice etc in movies puts me right off. I want to escape this B.S. in our culture right now, not see it in Star Wars, Marvel, or other fiction.

Because even the 'good old days' had lots of representation they just want to pretend they didn't. Our problem as you, and they in their more lucid moments, point out is not representation. It is weak writing, consistently weak writing.

The one good thing that came of this movie was Hemsworth's workout routine. Compared to the usual hardcore stuff they were traveling constantly for shoots so it's all doable at home and much sleeker than the Thor body build so it's not as intimidating for a beginner

Why should we care about the international aspect of this film? It's the MIB. They deal with interplanetary, intergalactic, hell inter-dimensional stuff. Why is a location change important when compared to the fact that we are dealing with aliens?

    • @Winasaurus
      @Winasaurus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

For some reason, reading this made me think that it would have been funnier to have agents that are just trying for a paycheck and are cynical with the whole MIB thing. "International assignments? Don't we deal with space? Isn't that as international as it gets?" and just totally not even trying when they neuralize people. Like they have some huge action scene and destroy someone's house, and they just do the flash and are like "Wow I can't believe you survived a tornado ripping through your and ONLY your house. Truly incredible. Anyways, see ya." and then just driving off. Give them some scenes of getting reprimanded and only staying in because they really need agents at a crucial time. Or hell, even have them get fired, but then brought back because of a larger scale invasion or something. Bit cliche, but that's how you reboot. It's been years since I saw MIB and I always feel that the lighter tone and non-serious attitudes are what made it so good. Sure you can have serious moments, but it feels like too many films are "We HAVE to do this. Now we HAVE to do that. The ENTIRE WORLD is at stake." I feel guardians of the galaxy proved a lighter tone with a less serious plot can do well.

I was just thinking that. As is was being described I thought "Isn't this literally the same in Captain Marvel? Right down to them even doing evil stuff but only to the people they have to to find the FTL technology?" Feels a bit cheeky to not only take some star actors from Marvel, but to rip half the plot from one of their movies is a little much.
