    While I'm not an expert in the shop tools, I really enjoy your informative shop videos and appreciate your production quality. That is some attention to detail and I know the time you spent shooting and editing this. Job well done and I look forward to your future videos, no matter if they have stop motion or not. :)

    Excellent video and an honest assessment of this machine. Over many years of maintaining my equipment, it has become clear that many machines come as a “kit” that can become a decent tool with a bit of tinkering, polishing, and aligning. There’s no real fix for poor quality tooling other that buying better cutters. At the price of the Rikon mortiser, it could well be a good value with some better chisels. The X-Y table has caught my attention as a worthwhile feature for sash making, where cutting mortises is the most time-consuming part of the process. Very informative review.

      Thanks. When I have the time, I will try to install a collet system to replace the sloppy chuck. A collet setup will.have no runout.

    Thanks for the great video.. Your a natural. I might buy one of these. I think your mortise machine stalled because of the substandard bits that came w/the machine. I was reading reviews on Amazon and everyone complained about the bits even when they sharpened them. I hope you do more videos, especially on the Ricon Mortice machine with better bits. Thank again.

Locally and I thought it was worth a shot. Coming with 4 bits and chisels it didn't seem like a bad deal. Thanks for the excellent quality video.

    Hey Alan, I'm looking at buying this exact machine, as I would pay about the same, shipping included for this machine as I would pay for the Jet JBM-5 unit here.
    A few years on what do you think about this machine, I'd really like your feedback.
    Did you ever find a better chuck?
    Where did you get your centering rod?
    Cheers!

    • @panofish
      @panofish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been busy with other projects for a while and haven't used this much, but when I have it has done the job. If I had to use it more often I'd rather have something with more power and more heft and with a better chuck. But, for as often as I use it .. it is worth the cost (cheap). I do still like the table which is the best part. I think the important question is how often do you need to use it.

      @@panofish I have a job coming up where I will need to cut about 170 mortices, but the wood is not hard, it's Basswood... i guess if I got this machine the tweaks you outline would be well worth doing as well as buying a couple of quality bits and chisel sets, I need I guess 5/8" and 1/2"
      Still looking for someone to ship me the Powermatic PM701, I found it here but it's close to $1200

    Is there any way the chuck could be dismantled to remachine the internal parts somehow? Or possible could the metric B16 taper be changed with a bit of machining to something north American?

    • @panofish
      @panofish  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see no easy way to dismantle the chuck. I did research the possibility of changing or adapting the B16 taper to something more common, but that is more than I want to do and can actually create a few extra problems. It would likely change the vertical position of the chuck which may conflict with the housing or the bits. The easiest option is to find a quality B16 chuck. They do exist, but apparently only in Europe or Asia and the shipping qoutes I am getting are very very high.

    • @chuckwin100
      @chuckwin100 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a woodworkers store in Canada called Busy Bee Tools and they have a website. I looked and they stock B16 chucks however the quality of these chucks is unknown. I think they will ship to the US also.

    I'm confused why the big concern w/ the runout. If the chisel is square and doesnt wobble and the runout/error is small enough that it does not impede the bit going through the middle of the chisel, why the worry?

    • @panofish
      @panofish  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience... the larger runout causes the bit to scrape the inside of the chisel. This increases friction, heat and noise and I believe it may also affect woodchip ejection. 15 thousandths is pretty huge... I wouldn't drill a round hole with a bit wobbling like that. But, more important to me.. I like things to simply work well. :)

    • @twopecker
      @twopecker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      .015 is not terrible, probably on the border of being an issue for drilling holes. I still wonder about it within the square chisel. I would guess there is still plenty of clearance for the bit. Just encouraging people watching reviews to focus on performance, not always the numbers. Did you check the runout of the taper itself? Maybe that is the issue?

    • @panofish
      @panofish  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcus Tuepker The runout of the spindle is good. The wobble also causes the square hole to not be a perfect square. There is a dimple on each side of the square caused by the bit. You can see it in the video at 9:32. You can also visually see the wobble at 4:58. Granted everyone has their on degree of acceptable tolerances.

    • @twopecker
      @twopecker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Glad to hear it's not the spindle, can hopefully be remedied then. I agree, that drimple/bump on the edge is not ideal, still way better than I can do w/ a set of chisels! Hopefully you're not taking my comments in mean spirit, just enjoy the conversation about stuff like this.

    • @panofish
      @panofish  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcus Tuepker Love the conversation and interest. I am more picky than most. I may use a router with template guide to create my mortises and then use this mortiser (with chisel and no bit) to square the rounded corners left by the router.

      a good well done review of this machine. Can anything be doen to improve the power delivery?

    • @panofish
      @panofish  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess the power will still be sufficient, if you sharpen and polish your chisels and bits and your bit is nicely centered. Not sure if there is any easy way to increase power further.

  • @ItSeemsDark
    @ItSeemsDark 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    the problem could be the motor not being perfectly vertical to the machine and not the chucks .... try putting a very thin foil under one of the four mounting bolts ...

    Nice job on the stop motion work!
    I think I'll be buying the Powermatic benchtop mortiser for about $500. It costs more, but has a 3/4 HP motor and it's Powermatic, so you are a lot less likely to have to deal with the crappy QC on these cheap machines. Sure, it costs a lot more, but I'd rather have something that I can use instead of something I have to fix when it's brand new. If you keep buying crap products, they are just going to keep making crap products and they are going to get worse year after year.
    Also, as others have pointed out, at 8:12, your bit is not set up correctly.
    Finally, I really wouldn't recommend grinding on parts or chopping things up or replacing parts until you've run the thing for a few weeks. If that thing died on your first few uses, you've already voided your warranty. Honestly, if it's so bad you feel you need to replace parts on your first use, send it back. It's only going to be downhill from there.
