I bought a used chisel mortiser a year ago. Don't use it a lot, but it saves a huge amount of time when I do. Worth every penny already even to a hobbyist.

Always enjoy instruction by Mike. He always has a clear and concise way of communicating.
To add to the discussion on the drill press technique, I have found that clearing away the waste can be very challenging. Often times, the scallops left behind from the drilling serve as an obstruction to removal of chips. This led me back to chiseling out mortises by hand (up until recently when I purchased a hollow chisel mortiser. Worth every penny).

Very fine explanation and demo of chopping mortises. I really appreciate your calm concise demeanor compared to the yelling,loud music and clickbait thumbnails of other channels. Have you used forstner drills to remove the waste? I've tried brad points and the forstner drills seem to work better for me. Also, it would reduce the splitting issue. Thanks.

You can overlap your holes if you use a Forstner bit.

thank you . question please . in metal work if i found a crack i would drill a small hole at each end to keep the crack from migrating . why is that done with wood working ?

Is it better to cut the mortise or tenon first & why?

With hand tools only I would start by cutting the tenon fat compared to the chisel I was going to use for the mortise, mark the length of the mortise using the actual tenon, chop the mortise with just a mallet and chisel (unless it is short), fit the thickness of the tenon to the mortise which should be pretty close to the width of my chisel. So start tenon, finish mortise, finish tenon.
