Omg thank you for this. I've been struggling to figure out what to do since I'm going to be homeschooled for highschool soon which is going to make everything 2x harder. Buuuut I still want to try and get into Stanford or Harvard to help prove to myself that homeschool isn't a disadvantage
If I have a diploma in piano, would this count as an activity or an honor? I spend around 12 hours per week on practicing piano and I've been doing it all year round for all four years of high school. However, this diploma is also considered the highest academic standing awarded by the conservatory of music. So, would this be considered an activity or honor? Thanks!
I would need more info, but it sounds like a diploma is school level. Add it as an honor only if you have an open spot. Put something like "classical pianist" as an activity and add details in the description.
If you are in National Honors Society is that considered an activity or Honor? Also if you are in Beta Club which is a national organization is that considered an honor or just an activity?
I've subscribed to your newsletter and signed up for one-on-one sessions. Not a lot of things are offered in here for low-income students but I still want to improve myself :)
I aim to offer many free resources at College Lead for this reason. 😊 I'm not doing this for profit--I'm a one-person team and operating at a loss. But this is something that I enjoy, so it's worth it.
Hey Kristen! I am an incoming freshman and would like your opinion on weather I should take the choir elective or dance elective, I originally chose to do both but my mom and I thought it would be best if I dropped one of them in exchange for an extra math class ( That means I would be taking geometry and algebra 2) . I can see myself being successful and enjoying both of them but I can’t decide which one I should do and perhaps one of them has more opportunities in which I could be recognized. Thanks in advance and thanks for your videos!
Hi Aileen, the answer really depends on what you want to do and which you can see yourself spending your time in. There are general recommendations on planning EC's but it comes down to what your interests and passions are. :)
Which one are you more passionate about, which one would keep you up at night? Which one do you have more potential in to become good at compared to your competition? Which one can you get a good position in at high school, like captain or varsity of the dance team or lead in the choir? For me, I had to choose between soccer and cross country/track. I chose cross country since it is more unique, easier to practice, better to become a leader, less competition, and because I enjoyed it. Try to list out the pros and cons of each and think about the FUTURE, because you will probably stick to it for all 4 years.
instead of putting ecs in order of importance, can i group up ecs with a common theme. for example -first 3 activities related to cs, next 4 activities related to community service, and next 3 related to school activities
I’m not sure if i’m missing something here, but what exactly is the difference between and honor and an activity? For example, I got chosen nationally to play in a certain band. What category would this fall under and why?
Great question! If you were selected to play in a band, I'd categorize that as an activity. You can describe the competitive selection process in the 150-character description. If you placed 1st in a competition for your instrument, that would be an award/honor.
Thank you so much for the video!! I have some questions, my country does not offer a lot of national awards and that kind of opportunities, can it affect me? And second: if I have awards of writing but in my extracurriculars I don’t write, can I put them?
You can explain your circumstances in the additional info section! th-cam.com/video/6PvT9cC_AQE/w-d-xo.html And for extracurriculars, I'm not sure what you mean. Could you rephrase your question?
@@CollegeLead I’m sorry, English is not my first language lol I mean: can I put an award I won for a text I wrote, although I didn’t put writing in my extracurriculars?
Your videos are amazing. I had a question I am currently a junior in high school and I am currently looking for internships so my questions is if I get a internship at something like Microsoft or something can I list that under an honour?
Thank you so much for the video. I am a senior who took a gap year and suddenly realized I want to apply for Harvard. What do you call an achievement that is National Level but not in your home country? I mean going on an exchange program and happen to be the national something of that exchange country?
Ofc! Glad it's helpful. And I'd classify that award as national, since it sounds like it was limited to students in that country. These levels are determined by who can apply. If only students within a country are able to apply, then it's a national event. If students outside of that country can apply, then it's an international event.
@@CollegeLead Thank you so much! Your channel is amazing and need to be recognized more. I binge watch all your video last night. And you saved me hours from self researching! Keep up the great work!!
Hey! I’m new to the channel and a high school freshman. I havent won any yet, but if I win a national or international rubik’s cubing competition, could I list that as an honor, or would it have to be academic?
Hi Shreya, My goal in making College Lead is to advise students on college prep. Knowing the exact ec's I did back in hs won't help you. It's impossible for you as a high schooler to copy my EC's. There are some skills I developed starting from middle school, because I was interested in certain subjects. And every student has different interests and passions. Even if you knew my EC's and tried to do the exact same things as me, there's no way to guarantee admission into my alma mater. It's the strategies that I used in hs and shared in my video that are relevant to you and other students. And these strategies are the takeaways you would've derived anyways if you knew my EC's. Hope this helps to clarify :) I hope you will also respect my privacy. I am happy to advise you on your ec's based on your interests in a one-on-one session. The US college admissions process is broken.
It sucks that students are restricted by these common app metrics, but it's the unfortunate reality :/
Thank you so much for this video, it is so helpful!
How do you recommend getting honor titles as a homeschooler? I have no idea where to look and how to get them D:
I love this video, thank you so much!

the music diploma from ABRSM or RCM is equivalent to a two year undergraduate degree :)

They’re both activities😀
Activities :) unless you are out of room in your EC's and have space in honors
