Making Bag Tags with the Longer Ray5 10W Diode Laser!

  • There are a lot of reviews out there of the Longer Ray5, but most of them are all doing the same thing: assemble, test some materials, cut through thick stuff, then exit stage left. I'd rather us go through the process of using the laser for something relevant to the channel: bag tags! The bag tags are NOT vinyl. They are a special kind of laserable leatherette. Do NOT cut regular vinyl with a laser unless you know for a fact that it is a laserable product.

    Oh my gosh, Georgia, it's like you're living in my brain! lol! This is just what I need! Thank you for doing another great video. Love those bag tags you made. (I definitely need those in my life right now as I get acquainted with my new Juki! lol!) Have an awesome day! :)

    Glad I found this! I have the Ray5 10W Pro Max Set sitting in the box. Once, (someday) when I get the shop cleared, and cleaned, and AC (In SW Texas, so AC is a must.) & venting installed, this will be handy for getting it put together and actually using it. LOL.

    I just bought the 5W version of this, and am loving it so far. As for acrylics, try marking it with a black dry-erase marker (or use of the commercial sprays that use the same type of ink). Apparently, that negates the problems. Or, if it has backing papers, leave those on to cut, then remove them. You should be able to get some good results.

      Oh yeah! It's been a while since I reviewed this. I've learned a lot more about diode lasers since then. You can use black tempura paint as well. You need to spray it on evenly otherwise it won't "burn" correctly. I just use my CO2 for glass. I don't have a rotary for any of the others anyway.

    Was there anything about needing Lightburn or some other software? I have been casually looking for a laser but don't want to be bound to 'their' software or 'must connect to internet to use' software. Glad you touched on how both your lasers deal with the clarity of the fonts.

    • @fiercekittenz
      @fiercekittenz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You CAN use Lightburn and LaserGRBL. It doesn't appear as if they have their own proprietary software, which was reason #1 for not even considering a Glowforge when I was looking for a CO2 laser.

    ?? Just watched your video on starting a bag making business. Very informative! Do you offer custom bags on your site or do you just have people request it? Also, curious how you would handle options for the fabric?

      I USED to, but it was so stressful to manage and I got a lot of commissions that were just not something I was interested in doing. I stopped taking commissions about 4 years ago.

    My Longer Ray 5W 10w decided to catch fire today. the whole Laser was engulfed in flames. I had only left the room ten minutes. Wasn't even 2 weeks old. So much for their flame detection..

    Good Morning Georgia! So I did a thing....and my laser will be here tomorrow! Yay! :) You mentioned that the thumb drive has tutorials, videos, etc. Is that all you relied on to get it up and running to be able to do what you wanted or did you have another source? Also, what software did you use to create your labels and templates? I am looking at LaserGRBL. Thank you so much!! :)

    • @fiercekittenz
      @fiercekittenz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is quite literally all I used to get setup and running. The video was the most helpful for me! For creating the art files for the laser, I use Adobe Illustrator, then import the *.ai files into Lightburn.

    Interesting. I guess would be interested in how to program it to do a 'tag'. Software etc. Extra Cost? I would like to do personalized cutting boards.

      I do all of my design work in Adobe Illustrator. I've had Adobe CC for years, so I pay the $50/mo for access to all of the applications. A lot of people just use Corel Draw or straight-up Lightburn instead of an art app.

    im really starting to like the features of this engraver compared to the sulpfun s10 . do u no if u use this laser with lightburn can u still use the wifi feature ?if so i might end up getting this one for my first laser. i want to start making family photos

      @@fiercekittenz would u recommended this one or the sculpfun s10? I'm having a hard time choosing between the 2. With the s10 I don't have to do any modifications to add air assets but it don't have the touch screen but if it don't have wifi I guess I'm not to worried about the touch screen lol

    I have been researching lasers. I was watching a video by (Eleana Workshop - Making a Mini Leather Backpack ) and I fell in love with the laser cut leather bag flap closure. If you have a moment, could you view the picture of the bag and let me know if you think what you bought will make similar a front flap? Thank you!❤

      Just went to look! Yes, the Laser Ray5 10w will be able to create those engraved designs on leather AND cut the leather.

    • @traceytowner176
      @traceytowner176 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you happen to know if it will cut and engrave 2mm leather or only up to 0.5mm leather? Ty!

    • @fiercekittenz
      @fiercekittenz  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@traceytowner176 I don't have any laserable, real leather on me at the moment, but I would be shocked if it couldn't. It was cutting through 3mm plywood and it can actually do thicker than that. I just don't keep thicker woods in my garage. It may take 2 passes to do it, but I bet at a low speed and high power, it'll be ok.

      Laserable Leatherette from JDS Industries. I added a quick note to the description to make sure people know not to use a vinyl that isn't laserable!

    • @fiercekittenz
      @fiercekittenz  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Make sure you haven't positioned the design too close to the edges. Depending on your speed, the laser head needs a little runway. The working area and the bed size are two separate things. The faster the speed, the less working area you have. Try to position the design in the center and give it another shot?

    • @fiercekittenz
      @fiercekittenz  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. This is a diode laser, so it won't be able to do much to acrylics that aren't solid. Solid black? Yes, but clear acrylic? No.
