Ubud is my favorite in Bali. It is the cultural center of the island and people are exceptionally friendly there. Tons of restaurants, cafes, shops, and things to do around. Rent a villa in the jungle and admire the beauty in front of you.

Things have changed in Bali- the rent & food prices are outrageous and have tripled with WAY too many people/crime there now! Do NOT go STAY AWAY unless you have tons of money! Go to the Philippines - so CHEAP and beautiful!!!!
If you are only after beach and cheap beer, then there are many other nicer and cheaper places to go in South East Asia. Bali is world famous for its unique architecture, gardening, spirituality, thriving traditional culture that you still see aplenty in Ubud but also throughout the island. Many temples and monuments are more than 500 years old, set in unique location, Thailand is no match in this aspect. People speak better English and more genuine in Bali.

I don't see the advantage Bali has over, say, southern Thailand. Unless I'm missing something.
