Inspiring interview. I also share Tarantino's disdain for digital projection. Television in public is a perfect description. It's like watching a fake copy of the film. It doesn't feel real. It doesn't breathe. And I don't think everybody needs to shoot digital. There are still a handful of filmmakers shooting on film. Hell, Paul Thomas Anderson is still shooting on 70 millimeter, which hasn't even really been used since the 70s. People say keep up with the times. How about keeping all formats and shooting with what's going to tell your story the best? If an iPhone has the feel that's right for your story, shoot with the iPhone. If 35 millimeter is what's going to make your film breathe more, shoot that. To ignore all these film stocks just because there's new technology is an extremely tragic thing. The old and the new are both good. I wish more people would realize.
A thought provoking interview for up and coming filmmakers, my first film was shot on 16mm film and I cut it on a flatbed editor. It was a creative high, and an unforgettable experience that made me love film. But the times are changing and as an artist I believe in moving with the times. Digital film making is needed because it will move over you if you don't keep up with the technology that's out there. Big ups to QT he's really passionate about his films that's why his movies are so unique.
itsdoublem1 you sound like a pompous snob...digital truly democratizes the process and allows people without resources/studio backing to engage in the craft of making a movie...it should be embraced with open arms
arthurbraxton I would prefer a world where film and digital could just coexist, like how books and movies coexist or books and tablet computers coexist just because new technology exists doesn't mean we should not throw the older stuff away.
David schloss I feel like most people just don’t care...either way...which is such a shame...the knowledge of film/ cinema and joy I have with movies like allot of movie lovers and Quentin..... feels like people don’t know consciously but maybe sub consciously they realise!
There's a lot of blasé thought about everything i have noticed. I really care about true capture and projection. And there will be revivals. We have two cinemas with 70mm projectors where I live and when they use them, NOTHING looks like it. It's like the frickin' Mona Lisa coming alive. It's religious!
I miss the 35 mm film. I'm 16 and I love 35 mm film and 16 mm too. I hope to become a film maker in the future and I hope to try bringing that feeling of 35 mm film back!!! Anyways, just want to show my love in 35 mm film and I just love Tarantino!!! (Hope this guy lives like 100 or even better... 200!!!).
There are plenty of directors that agree with Tarantino about the value of film, but he seems to be the only one rallying for SHOWING movies on film. Which I think is important. Wish more directors paid attention to this.
@@scottherf It doesn't. Film will never dissapear. Great directors always looked into the futur. We already had plenty of great movies filmed on digital, the problem with the format is that you need to have more attention to details while film do all the job. But Digital will inherently bring more things to the table on the long run. What Tarantino says has no intellectual value.
I agree with Quentin on this, Cinema is dead and I miss film projection in the Cinemas, there is a quality that digital projection can't duplicate. It hurts my heart.
Of the 21st Century, maybe. Of all time? Let's not be foolish. Directors such as Akira Kurosawa, John Ford, Ingmar Bergman, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini, Fritz Lang or Jean Renoir would be serious contenders. Not Quentin.
If you can appreciate hitchcock then you can definitely appreciate tarantino. I think so because he cares about the art. I am seriously tired of these fake green screen movies and he refuses to do it that way. His quality of film is great and his themes are original. Hitchcock had the same idea accept he was more thriller. Tarantino does his thing and sticks to his style like hitchcock. Scorsese can give him a run for his money but other then that, I think tarantino is a 21st century hitchcock.

Saying using digital projection is the dead of cinema is just a sign that Tarantino is not updated with technology and how humans evolve. Is journalism dead because there is a large number of internet readers?
digital is how we visually view something artistically, and changes are perception. Journalism is still the same unless we use the argument which is valid that journalism is dead because we have lost the art of the spoken word, and expression when we have a flood of information being thrown at us, and many poor writers of blogs and newspapers.
Not necessarily, I think Tarantino is just in love with PHYSICAL Film. He wants to be able to see, touch, feel, fucking smell it. It's kind of insane but that kind of passion about something also makes him an amazing filmmaker
Before saying something like that, you might want to do some research on why that's his opinion. He has some very good points. Personally I disagree with him, but it has nothing to do with not being updated. Your comparison to journalism has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Jeremy Kurt Television is better now than it has ever been. I think film and TV have kind of traded places in terms of artistic approach. 13:40 - That is why we can't have nice things (here in Serbia)... Semi-literate "journalist" wastes time and breathable air of everyone else in the room when she comes to talk about global affairs rather than movies or anything movie-related and later expresses on our television that she's disappointed in a guy who wouldn't publicly support thing he knows nothing about... Funny how "journalists" you never heard about pop up to report things in Paris, Canes, New York, and various other attractive locations, and embarrass your entire nation by proudly stating where they are from, as if that's going to make their questions/arguments any more valid...
itsdoublem1 Oh, man, you haven't seen Serbian women, have you? Of the top of my head: Ana Ivanović, Anica Dobra, Branka Katić, Stana Katić, Irina Ćuk, Dubravka Mijatović, and various others, gave me hope that professional ethics, rather than good looks would land you a job like reporting from Canes...
just wanted an political statement.. and rightly got shut down... this also proof my theory that at EVERY Q&A is some person that asks awkward/weird/non-related questions...
RushLimborg You're right he didn't have to but he did. Besides he was right if he took a picture with her many others would have ask him for one as well.
I don't think Tarantino had any idea what that girl was talking about, so he just decided not to comment on it (always a good move). I actually thought that the girl was saying "Serbian flats"
No one's favourite It's only the worst flooding in Europe in a century, not as important as whether Pulp Fiction is going to be shown in 35 mm at Cannes.
They said that because it's a conference about films, and she purposely asked him during the conference to guilt him into doing it. She could have asked after or before, but she chose during the conference. Very sleazy way of getting help for a situation that desperately needs it.
I agree with Tarantino on death of film. Go to Best Buy for example. Walk into the HDTV room. Watch the screen. 'Avatar' (HD cinema) looks like a soap opera circa 1980. 'Jurassic Park' (shot on film) looks like an after school special. Something with the transposing of film to digital image. And forget digital to digital just looks like hell. It's artificial looking and hyper real. Do you think Samsung understands film? No they make TV's... Our technology is surpassing our artistry.
I don't see how is David Fincher exciting director... His best work is far behind him, sure The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon tattoo are good but he has also made some not so good movies (like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and i don't really see his projects getting better. He's not really an author director, the script he thinks is good he directs it. PTA is more exciting director since he's really maturing as a director and his projects get only bigger and ambitious (he is far different from a guy who made Sydney and Boogie Nights). Also i see Christopher Nolan there, sure his movies can be dull and pretentious but he is yet to make his best film... I think that Steve McQueen should be there, you can say that his movies are slowly paced but the man has had a great track record so far (Hunger, Shame and 12 Years a slave) and now with Oscar under his belt, world of new opportunities is ahead of him...
I don't see a problem on Steve McQueen's films being slow paced. His films take the necessary time to tell what he wants to tell. I've never been bother by slow pacing like many people do, It could bother me the slow pacing if the film I'm seeing is not showing nothing interesting.
On your comment on Fincher you could say he made his best film already but the guy definitely has created a status like Nolan where people get excited every time he has a new movie coming out and he is still doing great films in my opinion. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button although is his weakest film and some don't like it, it's not a bad movie; not his strongest but the film has elements of mastery in it because Fincher is a guy that knows how to direct and has positives in it.
What I meant is that Nolan is more trying to appear pretentious, Inception is pretty much down to earth movie but people praise it like it's some kind of a masterpiece. It's just a good movie. As far as Steve McQueen, I love his visual literacy but a lot of people find his movies slow in pacing. And, yeah, I was kind of wrong about Fincher. For a while it looked like he could only do one kind of movies but then he made The Social Network and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button which are a total shift for him. And Gone Girl proved me very wrong, that movie was perfect in almost every way, and after re watching few movies of his you can see him really improve on his already great craft.
dunno you know I like that you are a flexible guy on terms of film opinion you are not one of those haters and pseudo film intelectuals that believe themselves to be bigger than the film that just say the words "Suck" or "Overrated" all the time, i really apreciate that. Gone Girl was so great I recently saw it and I enjoyed it very much. I agree on what to say with "Inception" many people claim it to be a masterpiece and I don't think so I say it's a well done blockbuster film with a very interesting concept but not the masterpiece people claim it to be, I thought they overused the concept of the dreams within dreams way too much but i really like like Nolan films though.
can somebody explain it to me what he was saying about this screwed generation and that he hopes future generations will be better I think I dont get it
Not sure what he and his friends see in Fincher. He's made as many mediocre movies (Panic Room, Benjamin Button, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as good ones (Fight Club, Zodiac, Social Network).
Victoria V. Haven't seen it yet but have always heard good things from people with similar views. Even counting se7en as a strong picture, he still has a good deal of mediocrity in his filmography.
I can see why he finds Fincher exciting though. Most film-makers have the occasional bad film. I like Fincher but I feel he is a tad overrated. The more I've been drawn into film, and film history the less I like his work, mainly because there are a lot better films out there. Se7en is a good fun romp into a serial killer film. But it's re-watch value is low. On the other hand Fight Club is incredible and well deserved of its praise! I particularly appreciate what he was able to do with Alien 3 (Directors cut) he managed to pull together a cohesive film which has some merits and flawed, but a film which is great considering that the studio was continuously changing their ideas, and he was working without a complete script of the film a lot of the time!
I don't like Panic Room (and haven't seen Benjamin Button), but I think " The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was excellent. As are his other movies. "The Game" is probably my favorite...hmm, on second thought it's probably "Zodiac".
John Doe Fincher is a good filmmaker, but I don't see what makes him exciting. He has been too meh for too long. I think Social Network was his big jump but I doubt he'll stay at that level. Hope he proves me wrong
I didnt like this conference, with those idiots guys asking without any respect some stupid questions. You can feel Quentin with a certain stress since the begining. Still admire him to be present in front of some jerks for wasting his time ( but not totally finally) in this kind of event.
i love reservoir dogs, 4 rooms, pulp fiction (as my internet nick is inspirated) and killl bill but the newer films django, inglorius bastards (expect the intro and the first nazi scene) i think are overrated and overhyped :-/
i would love to make a movie with him i could add more to one. he makes movies like i would , i would add some science unheard of ,yet professors would accept it as truth or fact
"In Reservoir Dogs someone bit someone else's ear." I don't think he saw the movie.

Who is the director Quentin mentions at 47:07
Pedro Almodovar. Basically, he's the Spanish director who, among other things, put Antonio Banderas on the map.
Boyhood's director.
QT squashes Trolls!!! And well said, I don't patronise cinemas anymore becos of digital screenings which I can watch at home.
She was GORGEOUS though. :-D
itsdoublem1
Oh, man, you haven't seen Serbian women, have you?
Of the top of my head: Ana Ivanović, Anica Dobra, Branka Katić, Stana Katić, Irina Ćuk, Dubravka Mijatović, and various others, gave me hope that professional ethics, rather than good looks would land you a job like reporting from Canes...
istina jebote kad je naisla ona budaletina dobio sam temperaturu
You have A Serbian Film though.
+itsdoublem1
Jelena Zezelj lol She was in the Serbian Big Brother i think xD
Is it me or does Quentin seem agitated/upset or something during this interview? You can hear it in his voice.
that's just his default ADHD-like manner: the cadence of his words and all. like he was on caffeine and cocaine all the time :)
He looks perturbed
the questions are shit lmao
11:00 great answer
What did he say about Italy? 47:48 ,someone can write it?
Grazie, molto gentile!
What did the girl say about Serbia in 14.03?
just wanted an political statement.. and rightly got shut down... this also proof my theory that at EVERY Q&A is some person that asks awkward/weird/non-related questions...
OH MY GOD, CHAZ EBERT! EEP!
47:40 a girls dreams destroyed
Yeah i thought the same.
At least he offered a handshake, which he didn't have to do. lol
RushLimborg
You're right he didn't have to but he did. Besides he was right if he took a picture with her many others would have ask him for one as well.
So the girl asks for some encouragement for Serbians after all the floods and they call it a "political issue," what the hell?
I don't think Tarantino had any idea what that girl was talking about, so he just decided not to comment on it (always a good move). I actually thought that the girl was saying "Serbian flats"
No one's favourite It's only the worst flooding in Europe in a century, not as important as whether Pulp Fiction is going to be shown in 35 mm at Cannes.
Liz R They didn't come to this press conference to hear about that though, definitely innapropriate, and nobody has any responsibility involving it.
***** indeed he's there to talk about films. Not "political issues."
They said that because it's a conference about films, and she purposely asked him during the conference to guilt him into doing it. She could have asked after or before, but she chose during the conference. Very sleazy way of getting help for a situation that desperately needs it.
I know my shit!!!
but he didn't handshake everybody
How much speed is he on, I wonder.
Oh...you've never been PASSIONATE. cool stuff.
thank you igegnere Fellini for 8 1/2 and for directing Mastroianni into uber coolness.I
I agree with Tarantino on death of film.
27:40 - super 8
lol at 13:16
Is that Andy Lee from Hamish & Andy asking that ridiculous question? It definitely looks like him.
Like the French andy lol
Wow! Big up to FINCHER, I guess!
Why would you consider Nolan's films pretentious?
I agree on what to say with "Inception" many people claim it to be a masterpiece and I don't think so I say it's a well done blockbuster film with a very interesting concept but not the masterpiece people claim it to be, I thought they overused the concept of the dreams within dreams way too much but i really like like Nolan films though.
who would like in this world noel edmonds or QT?
can somebody explain it to me what he was saying about this screwed generation and that he hopes future generations will be better I think I dont get it
A Few Dollars More a far better film though even if not the 50 year anniversary
Battle royal my fav movie pub g watches dis interivew n creates d prototyp of fortnite
nice comments 37:50
19:17 and how many of those are from an actual analogue source and not digital?
Why they always ask stupid questions to Tarantino? They only try to annoy him...
QUENTIN THE NEXT TIME YOU MAKE A MOVIE INCLUDE THE SONG "FEVER" THE LINK WRAY VERSION ,YEA! SCOBIEAKALINKWRAYBAND Laurel, Md.
Not sure what he and his friends see in Fincher. He's made as many mediocre movies (Panic Room, Benjamin Button, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as good ones (Fight Club, Zodiac, Social Network).
se7en?
@ 41:15 just like Darth vador redeemly killing the emperor. He could have been a bastard till the end
QT is GOD.
The boy who wanted to be an "enfant terrible" and ended up being the laughing stock of the real cinéma artists.
13:20 - jlg
30:20 Really, who are these people. Could they be more bored and disinterested?!
i would love to make a movie with him i could add more to one. he makes movies like i would , i would add some science unheard of ,yet professors would accept it as truth or fact
30:00 HAHA!
No, you don't have to do any thing of the sort. Quentin, go away.
OhMan! he's so aggressive!
