      Almlost undefendable. Kareem was a.student of Bruce Lee, BL had a quote 'I do not fear the man who knows 1000 kicks, I fear the man whon ok practices one kick 1000 times'. Some times being a 'one trick poney' if you know and are smart enough to set it up its better that have a huge offensive arsenal. This is by far the best video on youtube that shows Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's entire scoring ability. From his skyhook to his baseline dunks, this center was the best to ever play in my opinion. Let's not forget that Kareem (Lew Alcindor) was the greatest college player of all -time. He was arguably the greatest high school player of all time. He has a legitimate case for greatest NBA player of all time. He was a great individual player, a great team player and a great leader. He had a well rounded game. He was beyond great at scoring, great rebounder in his younger days, great shot blocker, very good FT shooter (especially for a center), and one of the best passing big men of all-time. He took care of himself physically and was able to compete, with success, against men much younger than him for most of his career. No one else, not even MJ, can be associated with all of these attributes.

    Born Lew Alcindor Two decades long between Milwaukee and Los Angeles, Jabbar's career began in Harlem. Lew (who converted to Islam in 1971) was born in New York on April 16, 1947, two years after the end of the Second World War. An only son, ultra-protected by his mother but severely shaken by a very strict father. The young Alcindor throws himself headlong into basketball to escape the family environment as quickly as possible. Spotted by the special envoys of John Wooden, he joined the West Coast of the United States and landed on the UCLA campus. With the Bruins, he won three NCAA titles in 1967, 68 and 69. Player of the Year twice, Alcindor is on the shelves of all scouts in the country.
    The Bucks chose him in 1st position in the 1969 draft. At the time, Milwaukee was a franchise with only two years of experience. When the 2.18 m giant arrives in Wisconsin, the big men begin to desert the League (Bill Russell has just covered in Boston) or are getting old, like Wilt Chamberlain who is approaching 35 years old. The door to success opens wide for the newcomer to the Bucks who begins with a title of Rookie of the Year, with an average of 28.8 points and 14.5 rebounds.

    He bows out at 42.
    How to explain this longevity which will lead Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to play until the age of 42? We know that in recent years, he has turned to yoga and martial arts, while meditation allowed him to manage stress before matches. The 1985 Final against the Celtics perfectly illustrates the way Kareem approached his meetings at that time. Ridiculed by Robert Parish during Game 1, passed to posterity under the name of "Memorial Day Massacre" (the Lakers take a correction 148-114), Abdul-Jabbar must be satisfied with 12 points and 3 rebounds.
    During the two days of break preceding Match 2, he follows a specific preparation, at the same time of the matches, by embarking on a real marathon focused on the work of an interior player. In this Game 2, Parish no longer knows where he lives: Abdul-Jabbar plants 30 points on his head, grabs 17 rebounds, delivers 8 assists and counters three times. Lakers win 109-102. Needless to say, the L.A. pivot is decisive not only in this game but also in the series, won 4-2 by the Californians. The MVP title is for him. Moreover, it is always this 1985 Final that he highlights. A final won at Boston Garden, which had never happened to him in his career. The previous year, the Celtics had sent the Lakers back to their beloved studies, like so many other times during the reign of Bill Russell.

      Without a doubt, Kareem is hands down one of the ALL-TIME greats, not just the NBA but, in the history of BASKETBALL!! It's asinine to say anything else.
      But if you're gonna start trying to say how he "dominated" Olajuwon. Let me think back to that time...
      I recall it being an extremely backbreaking ordeal for Kareem to carry that whole team on his shoulders. I mean, he had to play with such ordinary talent like Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Jamaal Wilkes, Bob McAdoo. Hmm...
      But oh wait! They're not ordinary talent. In fact, ALL of them are in the HOF! But wait again! They all played on the same Lakers team, at the same time. Counting Kareem, that's FIVE Hall of Famers together on the same team. Wow!
      Give that level of greatness to Hakeem and he would've destroyed the entire league. And even without it, that "young" Hakeem beat Kareem and the Lakers in the 1986 Western Conference Finals.
      I say again, this is NOT any disrespect for Kareem! But when talking about him vs. Hakeem Olajuwon, let's not go overboard please.

      He was private and hostile towards the media, so they got pissed and slanted the story of his legacy. Combine/contrast that with Magic Johnson who had a smile and a high-five for everyone and the combination of "Kareem and Magic," as it was properly called back then (trust me on that, I was there), became "Magic and Kareem." Crossing sports, it's kind of like how the media elevated Jim McMahon over Walter Payton when they covered and discussed the '85 Chicago Bears.

    Most consider Magic or Kobe as the Greatest Laker, but Kareem may have been the very best to wear the purple and gold. He was their number one scoring option for the majority of the 80s until Riley asked Magic to take more of the offensive load to relieve the aging captain in 86-87.

      Alfredo Di Stéfano Laulhé Here is the problem, magic has 5 rings and is top 5 all all time assist leader and part of the dream team along with guarding moses Malone in the finals as a rookie. Kobe never had any moment such as that.
      Kareem is the all time leader in points and went toe to toe with wilt. Wilt. Kareem also has 6 rings along with 6 mvps. Wilt murders kobe in probably every stat except shooting percentages. Elgin Baylor career averages outshine kobe, Jerry west is the NBA logo for crist sake, Shaq single handedly gave the Lakers their first 3 peat since 1951. Yes kobe played with him but eeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvveeeeerrrrrrryyyyyyybody knows that shaq was the driving force and finals mvp along with being the person that the offense ran through.
      Kobe is easily an all time great not top 10 but all time. He is a top 10 Laker I give him that it's not his fault that he is part of the second biggest franchise in basketball that has two top 5 all time scorers and 2 top 5 all time rebounders along with a top 3 all time assist leader. Kobe just has too much that he will never live up to.

    Thank you for this vid. IMHO Kareem is the greatest. What's scary, is that it's even a debate cause of 3 things. 1. Lucious Allen gets hurt before the 74 NBA Finals they lose in 7. 2. KAJ hurts his foot in game 5 when he dropped 40 in the 80 finals(still should have been the MVP). 3. Tragic Magic 84 finals. MJ was fortunate that he or any key player never got hurt during any of the Finals runs(Only Scottie's back in 98 but he was still on the court).

    • @OneHundredPoints
      @OneHundredPoints 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think he's the greatest at all, and i will tell you why. 1st He's not greatest winner, Michael Jordan and Bill Russell got more rings. 2nd He was not that athletic, Hakeem Olajuwon surpassed and dominated him (although i agree that Jabbar was too old and Hakeem was young), Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell were also better athletes, they were better rebounders and shot blockers than Kareem, and Wilt was even a better scorer and averaged more assits than Jabbar... Wilt was a great passer, but he didn't give more assists than Kareem because of his talent, but because he was the most dominant player of all time. Wilt in 1967 or 68 playoffs averaged 24points 24 rebounds and 9 assists, that's unsurpassed. Nobody can do that in any era, even in that era, except for Wilt.
      But i agree that in some way Kareem yes he's the greatest, i think he's the most gifted player to ever play the game. Even Jordan or Wilt weren't better basketball players than Kareem, but better athletes.
      Kareemwon 6 MVP and 6 rings in two different teams, that's un matched.
      Last thing. Haters and basketball illiterated always dismiss Wilt saying that he played against 5'9 players, but that's not true at all. 1st of all, Wilt Scored 60 points and grabbed 55 rebounds on Bill Russell. Russell was 6'11 and he's arguably the greatest defender of the game ever. 2nd, Kareem didn't play against taller guys than him, specially during the 70's, he used to play about shorter guys than him. In fact, players like Nate Thurmond or Wilt himself, knew how to stop him.
      Kareem averaged 43 % against Thurmond career. This means that Thurmond was the guy how best know how to stop Kareem 's game. Even Kareem admitted than Thurmond was his toughest guy to play against.

      OneHundredPoints Not that athletic? That's a pretty dumb comment. And as for Jordan being a better "winner," Abdul-Jabbar won six titles and the MVP six times to go along with three NCAA titles. He won his first title with an expansion team in their third year. That's quite an accomplishment. He absolutely destroyed Chamberlain when he entered the league. Kareem's amongst the three greatest players ever, in my opinion.

    • @OneHundredPoints
      @OneHundredPoints 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kedbuka Kareem wasn't that athletic, everybody knows it. I don't care if Kareem is better than Jordan, i rather like more Kareem than Jordan. Duncan won the ring with a loser team in his 2nd year... and Bill Russell the first year (the Celtics had 0 rings when Russell joined them). Kareem destroyed Chamberlain???????????????????????
      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA shittiest coment of all time!!! You're pathetic!!!
      Wilt blocked Kareem 11 times in 1972 WCF, and the Lakers defeated the Bucks!!! Study the history, you fool. In the first game that Kareem and Wilt playd against, Wilt dominated Kareem. Kareem averaged a 43 % in the 1972 playoffs against Wilt.

      Every time the league expands you have more teams and less All-Stars per team even for great teams.
      In 1989-90 the NBA expanded by 4 teams. In 1995 by 2 more. Great try to disqualify all the other players from the G.O.A.T conversation but...not so great after all.
      Wilt Kareem MJ and Bird have great cases, everyone for different reasons.

    If Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won two new NBA titles in 1987 and 1988, Abdul-Jabbar was not fooled when it came time to retire. American society had evolved. She no longer looked at him as a curious beast. But the distrust of this player definitely apart was still there. “Since I retired, everyone sees me as a venerable institution. Things are changing…”, he laughs today. Without ever really leaving the shadows.
    We saw him assistant coach with the Clippers for a few months in 2000 (looking into the Michael Olowokandi case…) then head coach of Oklahoma, a minor league team, in 2002. Returning to the Lakers, he was responsible for frame the pivots. He worked with Kwame Brown, he does the same with Andrew Bynum. But he was rarely seen chatting with Phil Jackson or his assistants… Few or no interviews, as always. A real lone wolf even though eight years ago he agreed to respond to the readers of Basket USA!
    During a transit through Houston Airport a few years ago, we saw Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the basketball player with all kinds of titles, buying himself an ice cream like an average traveler before taking a flight to Los Angeles. Alone with his kit, like a globetrotter. And obviously without being bothered by anyone. A strange sequence to say the least. As if this exceptional player reflected the image of ordinary mortals. There will always be a blur between Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and America, even if today an award bears his name: the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award. It distinguishes the player who stands out for his actions for social justice, and he presented his trophy to Carmelo Anthony this season.
    MVP titles: 1971, 1972, 1974, 1976, 1977, 1980 Number of NBA matches: 1,560 Number of career points: 38,387

    Ironically, Michael Jordan, who, in my opinion is the G.O.A.T, had a horrible indirect effect on the game. After his era, both the notion of athleticism and skill have narrowed only to include speed and jumping ability for the former and ball handling, driving and jump shooting for the later. This was further exacerbated by Allen Iverson and Shaquile O'neal so that speed and power took incredible primacy over all else. In the early 2000s, the NBA received its poster child to represent what the ideal basketball player ought to be, speed, power, size and jumping ability, enter LeBron James. Dont get me wrong, LeBron and all other player that I am talking about are phenomenal basketball players. The point is that the game has become progressively about linear motion and less and less about the rotational movements that require a greater degree of flexibility, balance and coordination as opposed to speed, strength and jumping ability. Look at Kareem, endless head jukes, turn fakes and actually rotating pretty much every time before the shot. In fact, the skyhook is released prior to fully facing the basket so it can even be said that it is done mid rotation on one foot. Scouts have to look for kids that can turn, twirl and juke as much as they look for kids that can run jump and push.

      +bfab Good points. And yet, skill players like the Spurs and Warriors still win championships, looking at the last 2. Neither of these teams have other worldy athletes in their rotations. Not disagreeing with you, but saying fundamentals are still the best foundation to win games, and the scouts on these particular teams have some things figured out.

    • @bobthabuilda1525
      @bobthabuilda1525 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +bfab True, but I would argue that players such as Curry are making the fundamentals cool again. Plus, rookie bigs like Porzingis, Towns, and Okafor all seem to have a better feel for the game and better mastery of the fundamentals than most of the bigs we've seen since the Shaq era, so I think the NBA is headed away from all that now. The desire to be bigger, faster and stronger always has and almost certainly always will be there, but I think that the more time goes by, the more that teams are going to start valuing skill as well.

    • @broaderrange5870
      @broaderrange5870 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +bfab You have great insight. You've put into words what I've felt for quite some time. Athleticism comes in many packages, the "Lebron/Shaq"-type being but one of them. Like others have commented, however, I feel that this newer generation of players features several players more in Kareem's athletic mode. They include Steph Curry, James Harden, Chris Paul and Klay Thompson. Tim Duncan, from an earlier era, is another exemplar of this kind of supple athleticism.As a track and field athlete and fan, I generally prefer the power-speed type, but either type of athlete is incredible and can be phenomenally effective.

      Except that MJ was also fundamentally sound. There really was no question about his talent, fundamentals, athleticism, and basketball IQ. The point is that MJ knew that it will take more than all of that to elevate the sport to greater heights. He knew the value of work ethic, professionalism, learning from mistakes and bad decisions, heart, pride, humility, team, and gratitude.
      He saw through the false paradigm of "skill vs strength", as he saw that these two entities are only two of the many elements of the sport of basketball.
      Few other players understood this (e.g. Bird, Hakeem, Magic, Kareem). The reason why these guys are timeless is because they got out of the false paradigm of "skill vs strength". They got out of the cycle wherein the game swings from strength to skill through the eras. While everyone else is subjected to that cycle, they take the game as an organic entity... and, instead of being slaves to the paradigm, they utilized those two elements along with a lot of others to make the game grow.

    Champion in his second year.
    During the summer of 1970, Milwaukee went from strength to strength with Oscar Robertson and young Lucius Allen. The effect is immediate. In the wake of Alcindor, who won his first MVP title of the season, Bob Dandridge, Jon McGlocklin and Greg Smith, the Bucks are crowned champions against the Baltimore Bullets (4-0). Kareem has plenty of time to admire himself in his first ring. He will have to wait nine years before winning a new one! He is certainly sacred four times MVP of the regular season (1972, 74, 76, 77) but it is only with the Lakers showtime version that he will know the consecration again.
    The divorce from Milwaukee came in the summer of 1975. Lew Alcindor, now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, stirred up trouble among Bucks fans. We do not understand his religious beliefs. We wonder about his culture, his opinions, his aspirations. Kareem demands a trade in a big city. Either Los Angeles or New York. There, tolerance and openness are greater, without being exceptional either. A deal is made with the Lakers. But it is a bruised man who sets foot on the Pacific Coast. Abdul-Jabbar lost a house and, even more, his childhood memories in a fire of unexplained origin. It will take a long, long time to win a smile from this extraordinary athlete who will win six NBA rings (five with the Magic Johnson Lakers), six regular season MVP titles and two Finals MVP trophies (in 1971 and 85), to name but a few.

    Artis Gilmore was only 240 lbs as a rookie, but hitting the weight room like a madman for years, he was transformed to 345 lbs of shredded muscle later on in his career.
    Artis Gilmore was MUCH MUCH stronger than guys like Shaq or Anthony Mason. Wilt with his 550 lbs bench press is probably the only guy on NBA history who's stronger than Gilmore. 7'2" barefoot Gilmore also had a 36" Vertical. Kareem was so good that he made a monster like Artis Gilmore seem human.

    I want to see a compilation of Kareem taking the long 2. Had textbook mechanics but his game was restricted by coaches thinking big men shouldn't do anything outside of the paint

    April 5, 1984 remains an exceptional - yet little known - date in the career of the prodigious Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. That year, he won nothing. Just a new quote in the All-NBA First Team. The main thing is elsewhere. As the season draws to a close, the Lakers center broke Wilt Chamberlain's career points record in a game against Utah. Record which then stood at 31,419 units. Sublime moment for the League. For five seasons, the interior of the Lakers will continue to improve the mark. In 1989, the date of the end clap, it amounted to 38,387 points. Karl Malone and Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James in turn overtook Chamberlain during their careers, but the bar passed by Abdul-Jabbar remained unbroken. But it seems less untouchable since LeBron James could cross it if he averages 15.5 points until the end of next season.
