I want to make a video about the differences between girl group and boy group dancing, not just technically, but also the history behind it, the reception from fans, how problematic it is and how I think it will evolve in the future - is this something that sounds interesting?
yes!! I honestly can't stand most girl group choreo but love it when the members perform boy group stuff in official performances or just when they're messing around in the studio! I'm not sure if girl groups are trying to appeal to the male gaze and thus limit their range of expression or if my distaste has something to do with preferring certain styles over others
I think Kai can be stated as one of the best idol dancers, whereas Lay can be put as the better 'dancer' dancer. If you told me to send either Kai or Lay do a dancing competition, I'd send Lay, but if you told me to choose a dancer to capture all the attention of the audience, I'd choose Kai.
Kai is a better dancer than Lay lol. For example you can watch they performed Don't Go, but you can watch Kai or Lay focus. Kai is more flexible, smooth, relaxed.

It was Lay’s Growl Fancam that ushered me to learn dancing. His dancing is just sublime. While I adore Kai for the stage presence, watching Lay and his subtle moves that perfectly capture the mood of the song is a blast. Like you can see his personality pour out in his dancing.
That is why I want a Kai and Lay subunit Both are amazing dancer and both of them deserve the first place. They music taste and dance technique would shake the kpop/cpop community

The dance trainer scolded him harshly and yelled at him that the style was not for him and to not dance like Kai. I was kind of sad for him and thought it was kinda mean? But now I kinda think the trainer saw that he was better in the groovy- style dancing instead of clean, sharp lines. He definitely has the musicality for it.

The observations makes sense. I used to always wonder why I am not as impressed with SH's dancing skills granting that he is lead dancer.. but you pointed out what i couldnt put to words. Indeed he does look like he is more of concentrated on executing the choreo and sometimes looks disconnected when dancing. I hope you could do more of this. Kudos to you
Woah thank you for making this. As a dancer myself, I was first captivated by Kai because of his smooth, sexy choreo in Love Shot. Eventually, I found my way to Lay who has shown a variety of dancing skills as someone who watched him in street dance of china seasons 3 and 4. Sadly, he is quite underrated as he has not performed with the group for years. Also, I have never realized until you pointed out that EXO's choreo have krumping incorporated since their debut.
Finally watched it! Even tho Lay is my bias and favourite dancer in the group, I think overall (taking into account not just one style and every aspect) Kai and Lay are on the same level, I literally cannot put one before the other. Interestingly they are as much on the same level as they are different. I just prefer Lay because I admire so much his mindset of constant improvement but really him and Kai are both amazing dancers. Probably (if we don't count SuperM) the best duo of main dancers in the industry.

finally some xiumin appreciation! he doesn't have the sort of magnetic natural charisma a lot of the other exo members have, so he tends to not stand out as much. but his dancing is really great! i am always puzzled when he isn't included in conversations abt exo's dancing
i really wanna thank u for giving lay this credit finally i really dont see a lot of people talking about him , ive always wanted people to see how much he keeps working and improving , + i would just want to add that he had a really bad back injury too that could affect him doing some moves more smoothly
I get it with kai, i think he's someone who have distinct dance style and indeed choose this particular specific style as his signature. You can see in his solo project where all has 3 title track has strong sharp, and clean dance choreos. Recently i watched choreography draft for rover on smp floor and it actually more wild(?) and groovy than final result. Kai made it clean, sharp, and added fluidity to the choreo and it's so interesting. It's pretty fun to watch him dancing to another groups or gg choreos with his own style. It got me like "oh that's kai dance" memored on my brain. Also with sehun i always notice how sometimes he lose control/balance with his feet. Many times ppl said he is also exo main dancer and i always correcting myself like didnt his position was a lead? Cause idk kai's and lay's skill in term of dancing is on the top, i don't think his skill is on the same level as them although his also good.
recently ive noticed i tend to like groovy dances more, so it makes sense why D.O. is my bias ❤❤❤ imho D.O. is one of those people thats good at anything he does

I do have a crazy opinion tho... yk Kai is not great at open style but he is widely recognized as a great dancer and performer, above the technicalities of some of his moves, there's just some others that are hard to get over, they are just mesmerizing to watch. Ofc I'm not the only person that thinks that and I've noticed many younger kpop idols that have mentioned they like Kai tend to focus on the same things Kai do which ofc sometimes leads them to lack in the same things Kai does... You said something like people copying this style could lead to less types of dancing but I'm not sure 🤔 it seems to me like if his influence was even bigger than it is it could actually be the opposite and create a new different type of dancing with its own strengths and weaknesses
His moves are incredible tho. Relaxed, smooth, and extremely flexible. Try to compare they performed Don't go, try to watch from different pov, you'll see how amazing Kai is.

He’s had to do it for a movie and he mentioned how much he enjoyed it so I was curious to see how far his technique has developed there. Baekhyun is a decent dancer for a main vocalist who never dance before joining SM. His dancing is improved a lot and he is a great performer. His dancing is so fun to watch. Among main vocalists in kpop, he is one who dances well.
I love your videos. I have a question, why does kai's dance look somehow the same even though they dance different styles? In my eyes who doesn't know much about dance, when he dances hip hop or modern dance it doesn't seem to be any different. Is it because of the tensions?. (Sorry for my English, I'm still learning).
He has very specific stylistic choices and habits (one of them being tension like you said). It looks similar regardless of the dance style because he always brings his "own" style into the choreo. English isn't my first language either (makes it super scary to post videos haha) so don't worry, you're fine!
I don't know if it's just a matter of preference but I've always liked Lay's dancing a lot better than Kai's. When I first watched EXO's MV Monster, Lay really captured me. His isolations are a lot more pleasant in the eyes and more precise. It has more swag and character.

That there isn't anything that "sticks out" in a bad way, for example some dancers with a good sense for rythm dance bigger or more energetic than it would make sense for some songs/choreos/groups

d.o likely has that posture to maintain alignment in his vocal technique~ he may not be singing but it becomes muscle memory so priorities y’know
