  • I compare two blank minidiscs currently sold by Sony to see if the difference is only cosmetic. I give an overview of the Sony MDS-JB940 minidisc deck.
    Featured gear:
    Sony MDS-JB940 minidisc deck
    Marantz CD6006 CD player
    Yamaha A-S301 amp
    Dali Oberon 5 speakers
    Sony MD 80 minidisc
    Sony Basic 80 minidisc

    To get the MD Recorder to record when the CD starts playing, you need to press the MUSIC SYNC button on the remote control unit. That will put the deck into Record Pause mode. Recording will automatically start when the CD starts to play.

    Wow, surprised to hear my name mentioned on your video! Back in the days of Minidisc there were literally hundreds of different types of disc, particularly in Japan. The two discs you tested were the last two made - the Basic from about 2006 and the MDW80T from about 2015. I believe the latter is still made but can't confirm it.

      A friend living in Japan emailed back and forth with a customer service person from Sony Japan who graciously confirmed the MDW80T is still under active manufacture.

    You are correct about the record level, for recording through the digital inputs, leave the level set to 0 dB, it should also insert track breaks automatically.

    Sorry to say that but this video was a waist of time and could almost be called clickbait.
    1. How should there be an audible difference in sound quality? It's a digital format! It's not like a analog format like a cassette or something where the different kinds of tape have an effect on the sound quality and the frequency range.
    2. If you really want to compare the two discs have to record the music from the md with a computer and use some software to analyze that music. It might be possible that small differences in the build quality of the disc can lead to small recording errors. But these error are so small that there is no way a human ear can hear them.
    3. On your remote there a different options for recording. If you have a sony cd player you could use one of the three options under the "cd sync" label. So there are stop, start and stanby. But you could also use the music sync button. That should work too.

      Error rate directly determines the sound quality

    I have both of these discs - The only difference I'm aware of is the labels included in the package. The 80T has more labels.

    I use the BBC method of recording back off the levels you lose a bit of signal to noise but the frequency is fully recorded as all mini discs use compression the load bits of the music don’t drown out the softer bits.

    I would be interested to see you compare the reproduction from minidisc compared to the various flavours of MP3 and Apple compression systems as used in ITunes and IPods etc. oh and a decent cassette deck.

    The large remote control you don’t like has music sync button - that gives you record pause mode for use with other brand CD players - this means the recording will start as soon as you play the disc
    The 920 has a music sync button on deck - 930/940 it only on remote control

    Perhaps if you had the Sony CD player from the same "series" as the MD , thee components might communicate better. 😎

    Hi I like your set up I have the Sony MD JB-930 single 1998 & the Marantz 607 CD player with the Marantz NR1200 amp & the Dali Opticon 2 MK2 speakers with the Dali E9F sub so a great sound experience, and I love my Mini Disc deck I still go to the Labrery to rent CD’s & then record them on my Sony MD machine and I also enjoy the experience like you I also recorded quite a few vinyl albums on to MD by analogue way I have over 300 MD recordings some compilations I made but mostly albums I also recorded all my Beatles vinyl albums of course I do also have a nice CD collection & yes there is a slight difference in sound quality but still a very good hifi sound I get from my MD recordings, my hifi is the same silver colour as yours except my MD deck is black but still a fantastic piece of hifi equipment that keeps on going that’s over 20 years old, as vinyl’s have made a big comeback & CDs are making a comeback I really hope Mini Disc’s will make a return as it sounds so much better than streaming services as well as CD’s, sorry for my long text anyway peace ✌️ and thank you for reading this.

    Tampoco hay diferencia aunque hayan sido usado más de 100 veces los MD. Recomiendo siempre usar la conexión coaxial, tiene más ancho de banda. Y al amplificador por rca análogo

    If saying about different, The main difference is durability if using type-S recorder.

    All the sony blank md's are good, but for the love of god avoid any of the maxell discs, they made great audio tape but their blank minidiscs are horrendous. sony type S were the best along with Onkyo recorders, the Onkyo FR-X7 is the best sounding machine ive ever heard. cds are 44.1khz -and you do know that minidisc is 48khz right?-

    • @njm1971nyc
      @njm1971nyc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Where on Earth did you get that idea from, about Minidisc using 48k sampling? Some MD recorders will accept a 48k (or 32k) digital input, but it gets converted to 44.1k.

    • @Synthematix
      @Synthematix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@njm1971nyc Yea my mistake i was thinking of DAT recorders, but high end minidisc recorders use 20Bit not 16, also sony chose the PS/2 keyboard standard as its far superior to anything thats on the USB bus, theyre faster, more reliable and come with much better quality switches, (IBM Model M for example) so much so every PS/2 keyboard has full key rollover, where as usb are picky about this, sony even managed to make the PS/2 standard "plug and play" in these minidisc recorders, meaning you can control every aspect of the recorder with the function and arrow keys, also you can plug them in/out of the machine at any time without restarting the recorder.

      What on earth do you mean “stay away from Maxell”. That’s just silly - their gold disc line was far better than Sony’s and don’t suffer from disc rot (the Sony are aluminum substrate and do).

      Don't hit me but I got some Sony MD 80 blank disks in Japan for about ¥380 each / £2.10. Perhaps if you know someone who lives there or will go there should go and check in a Yodobashi Camera store..

      The MDS-JA555ES is the best MD recorder for sure. The JS555ES has a much more reliable laser.

      @@inputerase I have a 50 ES a 333 ES and a 555ES.
      I prefer the sound of the 50 ES, it has a warmth that the other two machines do not have. It also has a far superior display screen

      @inputerase 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@IncognitoChild True, the display is beter. Sound no, the JA 555ES has a much better dac for sure. The JA50ES sounds goed for sure, but less “open”
      But most of all! The laser of the JA50ES is terrible, and there is still no solution for that. The JA555ES is using a very reliable and common laser. Bad laser no sound!

    copied cds or original cds have no difference at all not even 0.0001% loss in quality specially when you record it low speed in a good recorder cause its nothing more then (data) same goes with md disk they are just more expensive cause they made to under go more heavy recordings and erase not to mentions that MD is compressed sound even bit lower then a 320kpbs mp3 140mb storage i have studio and owned also MD but not used them much now days Flac format cant much anything in quality

    • @EnochLight

      Getting through your word salad, you didn’t say much. This MiniDisc deck uses ATRAC-R/S compression, which is far (measurably) better than 320 kbps MP3. You’re thinking of the original ATRAC 1-3 compression, which sounded worse than a 320 kbps MP3. ATRAC-R/S (the latter of which was for Net MD) sounded almost as good as FLAC.
