    the water thing is legit! A full freezer stays colder using less energy and when/if you lose power it will keep everything frozen longer. The water bottles are just to keep the freezer FULL. ;)

      @chaos_monster 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Thanks wanted to write the same 🙏 Additionally it's also about opening and closing the fridge/ freezer
      For those who are into science: it's about the rate at what an object (water bottle vs same volume of air) can release the cold. Air heats up faster than water.

      Also for those when electricity goes off and water pump can’t work you’ve got water

    • @angeliquerider-mitchell2538
      @angeliquerider-mitchell2538 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Too true. The idea is that water is better able to hold the temp than air so once it hits the temp you're shooting for it will hold that temp whereas air/empty space will cause your freezer to work harder, cycling on & off to maintain the set temp. A fridge will work the same way. So the goal is to keep it full of something to save power. Of course once you need the space for actual food, just remove the jugs as needed. Also you'll always have some extra water in an emergency.

    • @StoneKathryn
      @StoneKathryn 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I like my upright freezer too! I have a chest freezer mostly for the pig meat. We had two pigs we had to put away a couple years ago. Only a little bit is left. We'll be butchering our meat birds soon so they can go in there. I never like sorting around in there for stuff. The shelves in the upright freezer are so much easier to manage! I like the door storage too that I don't have with the chest freezer. I have an area to put my frozen butter in that the pounds of butter fit in perfectly and it has a closure over it too. It's easy to hang a thermometer in there to really be able to see the temperature it's keeping. The chest freezer was cheaper and I guess it's more energy efficient but not so much user friendly! Have a great week!

    Pro tip: To defrost a freezer (or non-defrost fridge) just set up a fan to blow ambient air into the interior. It doesn't need to be hot -- any temp above freezing will melt the ice fast. No need to scrape and once the meltwater is drained, the fan will dry out the interior to boot. Do this once and you will never go back to scraping/hot water/hair dryers/etc !

      @@TinyShinyHome It is not necessary for the air to be hot or even warm. Ice readily melts when exposed to moving air that is anything above freezing. Just direct a fan into the interior! If the air is below freezing...yeah, it won't work.

    I have lots of water bottles in my freezer. But the smaller ones (500ml). It takes up less space, and I can move it to fit in any gap. So after my monthly shopping, I layer my frozen goods with a layer of frozen bottles inbetween. It helps keep everything cold, and reduces the time it takes for everything to freeze. Plus, if the power does go out, the food stays frozen for a lot longer. I've never had to test it till food started thawing. But I know that 2 days with no power made no difference to my frozen foods. Plus, if you really need to, you can put some of those frozen water bottles in your fridge to help it stay cold inside.

    Ashley, as others have mentioned, yes to the water jugs, whatever size. In addition to helping with efficiency, if power goes out for any reason, food stays frozen longer! Mesh laundry bags work great for hauling food in/out chest deep freezers. They come in all kinds of sizes so get the bigger, heavy duty type for gym wear/sports stuff.
    i am one of 18 siblings, with Kansas farmer parents. We grew up pressure canning or dehydrating everything. My mom canned in half galloon jars, by adding 20% more time to the USDA quart jar times. 4 half gallon wide mouth jars fit in the 23 qt Presto canner. (Not USDA approved). I realize that canning & storing glass jars, full or empty is not something you can tackle now! It takes a lot of space. But a tidbit to tuck away in the memory for future possibilities. As to the canned jars surviving in your Arizona heat, I had to keep mine if an uninsulated, no air conditioning garage, in the Palm Springs, CA area (for 23 years). Temps in the garage would soar to over 130* F for months on end. None of the food went bad or jars came unsealed. The quality would deteriorate some. And I suppose some of the nutrients would dissapate. No matter, it was prepared food, ready to eat, not dependent upon power supply.

    I hope your rental car held up better than mine did. Had a dog run into the side of my car a couple of weeks ago, so i had to get "a" rental car, which turned into 3 different ones in 5 days, due to maintenance issues. I still have the 3rd one, but its a clunker. And the bottles of water in the freezer..... my daughter does that. She says the freezer does not have to work as hard to cool it if there is not a lot of food in there, AND if the power goes off it helps foods stay colder longer because the bottles are solid blocks of ice and will thaw more slowly than a lot of the foods that may ot have as much mass.

      I once worked at a place where hours were long and overtime was common. One of my coworkers brought in a stack of 5 packaged frozen meals to store in the freezer section of our break room refrigerator, so that she could have a hot meal on these longer, overtime days. One evening, Ashley opens the freezer, anticipating a quick meal, and one-by-one, she discovers each of the boxes have been carefully opened, emptied, and returned to the freezer! We were a pretty small crew, so who could have done this? Through a process of elimination, we figured out the culprit was John. His excuse? “Well, she’s such a bitty little gal, and I figured she would understand that a big, strapping guy like me NEEDS to eat.” Really…SMH. Ashley’s husband abandoned the family, and she was struggling to raise 2 kids on her own. She lived frugally, paid her own way, and sacrificed everything for her kids. She didn’t need to be feeding this “strapping guy” a second meal because he was hungry after finishing his first dinner. The rest of us made sure she ate that night. We all chipped in, and bought 10 replacement dinners, storing them in a box in the freezer, labeled ‘Ashley’s Meals’. The guys told John that if he touched one of her meals, he’d have his fingers broken - one by one.

    The water bottles make the freezer more efficient by displacing the air with a solid thermal mass. We do it in our freezer to remove as much air as possible.

    the jugs of water int he freezer - you wondered "do people do that"- yes, they do that. the point is to add thermal mass. Imagine if the freezer was empty (air only) if you open it, the air exchanges, and there's no mass in there to act like a battery so the temp spikes when you open it. Now imagine it full of ice. If you open and close it, not much will change temp wise. So the point of the water jugs is to take up space - to add mass. If you have lots of food in there, it will do it too. The point is to fill it up. Just think about it like charging a "cold battery" so that it's more efficient when you open/close it.

    You only need the water bottles in the freezer when there isn't much in it. When your freezer is that full the mass of the items help keep the temperature low. Think of it this way. In the winter it often gets colder the closer you come to a large snow pile.

    I love this video and all of the ones you've posted along the way. Something just occurred to me. Could you create a sort of B&B out of earthen houses on the property? Maybe some standalone buildings that could become an extra source of income for you. Or, even build them for volunteers who help on the homestead or with new building projects? Or, just homes for the kids as they become older? Instead of a homestead, you might have the beginnings of a community.

    I use a up right freezers only. With the freezer shelves it makes it so much easier to organize so you can keep track of what you have in the freezer. When it comes time to defrost the freezer we remove the food on a warm day and put a huge fan in front of the freezer with the door open and the air flow melts the ice and frost build up rapidly. Since it is a up right we don't have to bail the water out. We and our family and some close friends live in Casa Grande, AZ. We raise Goats, Chickens, Ducks and a few Turkeys, Pigs and a Steer. When we harvest some of animals a lot of the meat we will pressure can a lot of it. We have 8 raised bed 4'X8" gardens and am starting to do hydroponic gardening for year around fresh veggies.

    Instead of the post and caster wheel, use a metal post. Pound that in plumb and use a metal ring that fits loosely on the post. With the post you can have it up 4-5' out of the ground so you can check the roundness of higher layers by sliding the ring up the post.

    I’m curious, almost all of the superadobe buildings shown on your road trip were small single-room (or conjoined single-room) huts. Is that due to the inherent characteristics of the superadobe process, the fact that the builders chose not to incorporate a different technology for their roof structures (like you did with the solar shed), or both?

    • @RandomGreymane
      @RandomGreymane 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      TH-cam deleted my comment, or a moderator did, but I had similar questions so I fired off an email to CalEarth and had a very pleasant and fruitful exchange with a person named Donner who answered my questions about odd things. Like putting a sprayed concrete dome on top of earth bags among other things.

    • @TinyShinyHome
      @TinyShinyHome  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      A big selling point of superadobe domes is that it allows people with limited income and resources to build a fully functioning building without needing to create a traditional expensive roof. That being said, at Cal-Earth there are several vault buildings with straight walls and poured concrete arched roofs. Lots of ways to do it, but they are definitely focused more on fast, affordable housing for the disadvantaged and a circular dome is super strong and cheap.
