    Sumter by the Numbers (2010 Census):
    City Population: 40,524
    City Area: 32.83 sq mi
    From Wikipedia:
    Sumter /ˈsʌmtər/ is a city in and the county seat of Sumter County, South Carolina, United States.Known as the Sumter Metropolitan Statistical Area, the namesake county adjoins Clarendon and Lee to form the core of Sumter-Lee-Clarendon tricounty area of South Carolina that includes three counties straddling the border of the Sandhills (or Midlands), Pee Dee, and Lowcountry regions. The population was 39,643 at the 2000 census, and it rose to 40,524 at the 2010 census.
    Incorporated as Sumterville in 1845, the city's name was shortened to Sumter in 1855.[citation needed] It has grown and prospered from its early beginnings as a plantation settlement. The city and county of Sumter bear the name of General Thomas Sumter, the "Fighting Gamecock" of the American Revolutionary War.
    During the Civil War, the town was an important supply and railroad repair center for the Confederacy. After the war, Sumter grew and prospered, using its large railroad network to supply cotton, timber, and by the start of the 20th century, tobacco to the region.
    During the 20th century, Sumter grew into a major industrial center. Starting with the opening of Shaw Air Force Base (now home to the 9th Air Force, 20th Fighter Wing, and United States Army Central) in 1941, industry grew, especially after World War II. Sumter became increasingly known for textiles, manufacturing, biotech industries, a thriving retail environment, and medical center of its region in addition to agricultural products, which makes it a hub for business in the east-central portion of South Carolina.

    I grew up in Sumter. This drive through is so appreciated. The lack of automobile traffic is very striking. There are no people to speak of either. I recognized streets and some neighborhoods. The city is so clean and tidy. It is nice to see how the city is well maintained. Thanks for the memories...

    It’s sad to see downtown Sumter looking like a ghost town. It use to be so busy and full of life. All the shops had a store full of shoppers. This is my home town . I grew up here. I walked these downtown streets many many a day. Where did all the people go!

    • @Comm0ut
      @Comm0ut 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are plenty of people but they live in much nicer areas than downtown which is too SMALL and too OLD to be desirable. Sumter should have leveraged sprawl and demolished those old buildings (exceptingt the few notable structures) because they just do not suit modern quality of life. Buyers invest in homes in Sumter COUNTY but not Sumter town. Most of the crime is still in the same areas you would expect and the county itself is a good place to live. I've been here since 1985 and retired out of Shaw in 2007.

    I grew up in Sumter as well. The streets are quiet or empty because its Sunday afternoon. My daddy had the only jewelry store in town in the 50's and 60's. It was a wonderful place to grow up.......I wish I had never left there. It becomes more precious to me as the years go by. Fav spot was Swan Lake. I lived on Alice Drive across from Aldersgate Church.

    This is especially interesting for me to see as I am of Turkish origin. Because, appearently, there is a community in this county that claims to be of Turkish ethnicity, being descendants of an immigrant who has immigrated to the US from the Ottoman Empire.
    Thank you for this video. Although there isn't much to explore on this town, I'd really love to visit there one day and hopefully reach out to one of the settlers living there and who claims to be of Turkish origin to exchange ideas and have a conversation.

      That would be the Benenhaley family..as well as the Oxendines..descendants of Scott Benengale a Ottoman seaman who became a bugler for General Thomas Sumter..Sumter bequeathed lands to the Benenhaley family ..this land is said to be that area now occupied by Shaw Field
