We're adding to our vegan recipes today in answer to Lisa Schwartz's request... She wanted a dish that is also gluten-free, so we came up with this quick and tasty curry made with okra! #Recipes #Vegan #Okra #Glutenfree #Curry #vegetarian
I used to watch all of your videos but since i've become a vegan i can only cook very little of your recipes and it makes me sad because you're the best cooking channel!!! PLEASE MORE VEGAN RECIPES
Leonie Pittnauer I know that my comment is very late, but for anyone on the future who thinks the same as you: Even when you're vegan you can watch all recipes (even the ones that contain meat!) and just use the same technique and/or flavours with veggies, beans, tofu, etc. That's what I do... Also, you never have to cook the exact same recipe, just take inspirations from whatever recipe. You learn a lot of cooking stuff (what flavours work together, etc.) just watching cooking videos which you can then use for vegan cooking.
To be honest chaps, I’ve never heard of Okra before, but I’m looking forward to trying this dish. I have to say gents as young man finally living out on his own. You have been quintessential for me cooking great food, whether it be just for myself or for my mates as well, so I have to give you a big thank you, I love this channel!
I can't wait to try this because I love okra! There's so many filipino okra recipes, but I think everybody would enjoy a good gumbo. Y'all should make a shrimp and andouille gumbo!
Canh chua (Vietnamese sour soup) and ca kho to (caramelized claypot fish) are a magical pairing. You get everything in there: sweet, spicy, salty, and of course, sour. Not to mention, fish two ways, and an assortment of veggies. So delicious!
If you like working with okra, I thought maybe I'd mention that smaller slices of okra fried with a cornmeal batter are good stuff as a side dish or a snack. I live in Louisiana and that was one of the first ways I learned to like the stuff when I was little. :) It's also lovely stewed with tomatoes and onion with a little red sausage added.
I always made okra cut into slices and stir fried with golden brown onions, little lemon juice, red chili powder, garam masala, cumin powder and fresh coriander. It turns out delicious, and cooks in literally less than 10 mins! served with tandoori naan or any roti and its amazing! Definitely going to try this one out though for sure, without the hummus just plain served with naan bread!
I've started watching Sorted a couple of days ago and at first I liked the idea of simple dishes. Now I realized I just love to watch Ben cook :). He is so passionate about it and I can see how much he loves it. I really like watching him! :)
Okra is awesome - we use it in a slow-cooked oven dish with other veggies (potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, green beans) that may or may not have meat in it. We also pickle it (yum), but the best way I've had it is covered with salt and olive oil and barbecued.
I made a vegan sweet potato curry a week or so ago using coconut milk to provide the creaminess, seasoned with garam masala and spiced with habanero pepper slices. It was really good.
I think a more filling option would be to substitute the hummus for quinoa as a gluten free grain alternative I think it would compliment the curry better
I agree with you plus even though these are "healthy" fats they went overboard on the portion control for what constitutes as healthy. A serving of hummus is 2 table spoons.
+Erika May Healthy fats only become bad if your calorie intake exceeds your metabolic rate and you become fat. There's nothing unhealthy about having more hummus than a serving suggestion, as long as you don't become overweight.
Josh Blake never worry about being overweight. It is body fat that affects your health. You could be overweight but have low body fat. Don't be upset, you are not the only one who believes this misconception. EDIT: Ideal body fat is 14% - 24%. It depends on many factors.
Erika May healthy fats are great for you! Also, healthy fat doesn't make you morbidly obese. You don't have to put that much and I am sure it is quite a nutritious and low calorie meal.
I'm so glad you've been doing alot of vegan dishes recently, I'm not technically a vegan but I don't eat pork, any processed meat and im lactose intolerant sooo I often struggle with new and different kinds of dishes so trying this over the weekend
i really like that you guys don't try and use rubbish substitutes that don't always taste good you guys just go for interesting things! so much of my inspiration comes from your channel!
I prepare okra dishes almost everyday for our meals, and I am so happy I saw this vid! Another new idea in my list of okra recipes. Thank you. And by the way I find you guys so charming and cute.
In the U.S., I've eaten okra (usually pronounced "oak-ra") stewed down really soft or deep fried with cornmeal, so this recipe is a new texture to me. Looks yummy!
O.M.G.! This tastes so good. I added some broccoli and carrots too, but nevertheless my vegan soul is loving this! I'd really like it if there were more Sorted vegan recipes ;)
Hey @SORTEDFood! First off wanted to say how much I love you guys ❤ my dad, a fantastic Indian chef, wanted to give you guys a suggestion on how to cook okra. Instead of just putting in, try frying the okra in a hot pan with little oil. It'll get rid of the thick, sticky, sliminess, and giving a more sharp taste! :) Hope you see this and try it out!!
you guys rock! i've been cooking a lot of your recipes lately, since i'm on my college campus for the summer, and my friends have all been jealous of my meals (they're obviously SO much better than the dining hall!). I've been telling them about your site and channel, so keep up the great work! :D
I grew up eating okra. Well we call them lady's fingers here in Asia. A simple way to cook them besides curries are to boil them and toss them in a mix of oyster sauce and some fried garlic :)
Only recently subscribe to your channel, and im glad i did. Its rad to see you guys cracking out vegan recipes and alot of the stuff ive seen you do so far has given me ideas of how i can tweak it to make it vegan. Good stuff guys.
Okra is easy to find where I am in the states. It should be noted that you very rarely prepare okra like that, especially if it's on its own. Its delicious sauteed but do not cut it at all, leave the cap on and when its done, take it immediately out of the pan otherwise it'll get all slimy. I also recommend cutting a jalapeno pepper and throwing it in the pan for flavor!
Hee guys, Im a chef from the Netherlands. Im a big fan of your show and i will love to see you guys making something Dutch. We have loads of sweet treats or savory dishes! Looking forward to that. cheers
Now I just go ahead and like the video before you guys tuck into the cooking because you've never disappointed me. I wish you guys all the success and longevity in life. Keep them coming boys.
Their old ham and mushroom pie is actually VERY similar to a chicken pot pie; just use regular pie pastry instead of puff pastry (and adjust cooking time accordingly) and chicken instead of ham. Worked well when I tried it a while back.
My mom makes a Vietnamese soup that includes okra in it that I still love to this day. However, I had NO IDEA what the English name for it was and you guys helped me figure out what it was called! Cheers for being ignorant all my life until now LOL
Hi! I'm not them, but here's what I think: you could use any kind of vegetables (e.g. carrots and squash in autumn, green beans, cauliflower or some sort of root vegetable, try to work with veggies that have some sort of "bite" to them when cooked). The only important thing is the way you cook (always undercook rather than overcook!) and the spices you use. Hope I was somewhat helpful ;)
Okra is one of my fave veges because it's high in fibers so good for those watching their weight. Another ingredient for vegan curry is bambo shoots. We called it "gulai rebung" in malaysia. Or the core of banana's trunk "Gulai batang pisang". :D
Okra curry is my all-time favourite and it's a BUMMER that I can't find it very easily after coming to London! :( I usually make it without onions and tomatoes. I use the above spices along with turmeric powder, chilli powder and buttermilk. Gives a nice consistency to the curry - not to mention, extremely quick! :)
WOW! I am so proud of you!! :D Challenge (for the new ingredient) well executed! When I make the okra curry (dry), I add a bit of lemon juice or raw mango powder to cut that slime.. Also, I generally love to make it with just whole red chillies, whole cumin and salt.. It is deliciousness.. For some extra flavor, add gram flour too.. That's it simple and yummm.. Serve it with roti, that is if it was not gluten-free.. The best meal ever.. Sorry for the long comment.. :P
As a long time sorted fan and fellow student I suggest skinny singapore noodles, chicken enchiladas, and easy chicken and mango curry. Not from sorted but also try eggplant lasagna. They're all cheap to make and the best part is that you can whack em'all out in a big pan and eat it over a week. Chicken is the cheapest meat, but for veggies always bulk out with potatoes, carrots, beans, and bell peppers. You can always find them cheap. Hope that helps :)
So nice to try vegan recipes from you! I've made all your vegetarian recipes already, but i want to become vegan- so these recipes are amazing! Thank you so much, especially because i know every recipe i try from you is guaranteed to be great & successful :)
I plan on going vegan for a month some time over Summer (I'm already a Vegetarian, so I'm half way there) so this is definitely something I'll be trying out then! Thanks Sorted, X
Here is a tip for you guys, if you are interested: Make large amount of a Garlic-Ginger paste. This can be used for cooking in other Indian dishes, or anything really. Just blend together equal amounts of Garlic and Ginger and some water to thin it out(but not too much!). Just store in the fridge or freezer.
Hmm, that is actually not too bad off an idea, I recently heard you can get it at asian markets as well... guess I'm gonna check those out sometimes soon!
Omg i just made this and it is delicious! I didn't have any fenugreek so I just used curry powder instead. And instead of hummus I made cauliflower "rice". Was very yummy omnomnom. I wanna make this again tomorrow :)
Ooooh, Okra! :D Just a quick thing, if you scrub the okra with salt before you cut it up, it removes some of the sliminess that was mentioned in the video. Much tastier!
it's interesting because in brazil and whole south america, okra is very popular and cheap...but u could change for jiló...but would not be same, and is still more difficult to find
That looks lovely! In India, we actually call it ladyfinger ;) or bhindi in hindi, Had never heard it's called okra too... learnt something new today. Oh and learnt a new recipe for ladyfingers too :)
nice to get this all info and qute surprise that it can be used to thicken the soups ....indian dont cook okra with ginger garlic .... just use onion and tomatoes ....:)
Great recipe guys, as always. Although... this is the 2nd vdo now I've seen you do hummus, and you're still missing Tahini (sesame paste, kind of like a watery peanut butter texture). Hope you try it out in your next hummus recipe! Cheers.
when u said all the ingredients i immediately thought it was like Indian food and then u said u had some and it inspired you!! if you got some Indian spices to cook with, this dish's taste cud be upgraded by like 8092384932% :D i'm a first year university student and this reminds me of my mom's indian cooking...
@magieedna Okra is not from America. It was introduced to the Americas in the Atlantic Slave Trade so it is from West Africa and also said to have been from South Asia
Another idea for Sorted - Do baingan bharta.. something like mashed aubergine with a blend of Indian spices.. Most of the Indian curries are easily vegan adaptable

looks awesome
Ask Lisa to eat salad. Problem solved.
Rapeseed oil is known as canola oil in the US. You could leave out the fenugreek or substitute it with some fennel seeds.
Being from Texas, I've been eating okra all my life. It's amazing, isn't it? I need to make this dish.
It's not on this channel because it's part of our Feel Good Food series for Body Talk Daily... but you can find it on our website!
We've done Sesame Tofu with Miso Rice and we've also done a Miso Soup using tofu! Have a look on our website!
Sure!

I know a friend who's decided to go vegan and is struggling to find recipes :D THANK YOU for this! I can now send it to him ^_^
Thanks! Love indian breads... especially roti!
We've done Orange and Cardamom Creme Brulee... check it out on our website!

How about our Vegetarian Tortilla Lasagne or Vegetarian Bean Burger or Stuffed Peppers? Pretty filling!
Never tried tinned okra, but it should work in this!

Amy al, then you just do that.
Hey! You should check out the curry chapter of our ebook! There's a paneer curry recipe and a homemade naan recipe! :D
I love okra and so glad to see you guys use it in a recipe! It is quite common here in the southern US.
Love this! Fun unusual change to serve with hummus instead of rice. Will definitely be trying this one out!
okra stew is like my favorite thing in the world. If its cooked right, its absolutely divine
I'm so glad you've been doing alot of vegan dishes recently, I'm not technically a vegan but I don't eat pork, any processed meat and im lactose intolerant sooo I often struggle with new and different kinds of dishes so trying this over the weekend

Im my state in Brazil okra is really common. We usually eat it with chicken and polenta. I'll try this version, thanks!

This is exactly what I was about to ask for! Thanks so much sorted!
This looks awesome! Thanks for making some veggie food, I appreciate it so much when you do.
Okra is a staple veg in the American south! We love it fried, stewed, and pickled!
Now I just go ahead and like the video before you guys tuck into the cooking because you've never disappointed me. I wish you guys all the success and longevity in life. Keep them coming boys.
Red onions have a more mild to sweet flavour.

Check out our Feel Good Food series on the website! Hopefully it helps!
Hi thanks for your answer. That sounds delicious, i´ll definitely try that one out!
This looks great! I will definitely try it. Could I substitute the tomatoes with anything?
Sure, green beans would be nice too!
Tined okra would work only if u cook less, or add at the end and cook for few minutes, as its already soften by the water in the tined.
So happy u have some vegan options 👍😊💚
My mom makes a Vietnamese soup that includes okra in it that I still love to this day. However, I had NO IDEA what the English name for it was and you guys helped me figure out what it was called! Cheers for being ignorant all my life until now LOL

THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN. Lisbug and Sorted TOGETHER!
I LOVE that this recipe is vegan & gluten free, finely something I can try out!
It's called canh chua, which is just a soup with a mix of vegetables like tomatoes and bean sprouts, plus okra!
Okra is one of my fave veges because it's high in fibers so good for those watching their weight. Another ingredient for vegan curry is bambo shoots. We called it "gulai rebung" in malaysia. Or the core of banana's trunk "Gulai batang pisang". :D

It is summer, so i hope you could do strawberry (cream) cake. It is a very classic summer cake here in Sweden :)
You can also serve the okra curry with some spiced chickpea flour pancakes..
it's interesting because in brazil and whole south america, okra is very popular and cheap...but u could change for jiló...but would not be same, and is still more difficult to find

LOL, I seriously love Jamie's creepy/dirty smiles! They always make the video more hilarious.
Here in Brazil we eat okra ALL THE TIME! With chicken, ground beef, chayote, or even alone with rice and meat. =D
Great recipe guys, as always. Although... this is the 2nd vdo now I've seen you do hummus, and you're still missing Tahini (sesame paste, kind of like a watery peanut butter texture). Hope you try it out in your next hummus recipe! Cheers.
Loving the vegan recipes! Keep 'em coming!
This looks absolutely delicious, but what makes it a curry exactly?
i love that u ask other youtubers what to make

What happened to your "Just Roll With It" poster? I'd like to get my hands on one of those...
Deep fried okra is big in the States. Ever try that?
