I live in the US now. But in 1980 when I was living in Viet Nam, my family had a boat and the basket boat. I did not know that the reason for having the basking boat was to get around the taxation by the Frenchy. Nice. Learn something new today. Bruh.

Good question, I think it all depends on how formidable the plastic boats are. Thinking about this video hind site Vietnamese people are very traditional, they might keep up the tradition of making the wooden type boat but if the plastic ones seem to be more durable it might pose a threat. I don't see people replacing their plastic boat if they know its faster and it can withstand the elements better than traditional ones. This video was filmed almost 2 years ago maybe it's time to see what has happened to the culture. They just started letting in tourists back in the country this year. Which was one of the reasons why they continued to created those boats.
