how do you keep the critters from getting at it when its just about ready to pick?

I have been really lucky and a lot of it has to do with the type of neighborhood I'm in. The houses are fairly close together, every house has a 6ft privacy fence, almost every house has dogs and there are a lot of outdoor cats. Critters don't generally venture this deep into the neighborhood. If I were in a different situation, I would put up wire fencing that has just large enough holes for bees to get in with motion activated lights/sprinklers. I have seen a camera that speaks "you are currently being recorded" when triggered by motion scare away raccoons pretty well
