Harvesting and Curing Sweet Potatos - 2024 Haul
2023 sweet potato harvest: th-cam.com/video/SunuGmZpgVU/w-d-xo.html
Starting Sweet potato slips: th-cam.com/video/OqUfpznUbPk/w-d-xo.html
Sweet potatos need to be cured for 7 to 14 days after harvesting to harden skin for storage, heal any damage and convert starches to sugars for that Sweet taste. To cure they must be kept at roughly 85⁰ F with 90 to 95% humidity durring this time. Curing is complete when potatos are moist but much harder than when first dug. After this curing they go into cool storage for 6 weeks for increased sweetness. You can eat them without this step but for best flavor store well ventilated at temperatures between 55⁰ and 60⁰ F durring this time. This will also improve long term storage by hardening skin further.

I love finding those grubs! My chickens act like each individual grub is a winning powerball ticket 😂
🤣🤣🤣 I didn’t have the chickens at this point so I didn’t get to experience that but let me tell you, pickle worms are considered a delicacy among the ladies! They will not touch squash vine borer grubs though…. Bougie little things haha
When you said you did it all on your own and didn’t want any help, I KNEW you had to be the daughter of a contractor because girl…same 😂 This was a well thought out coop. It took you 4 months to build it because you didn’t cut any corners! Absolutely amazing 🙌🏻
Thank you! Yup, I am my fathers daughter for sure! But let me tell you, it has made me not want to touch another structure build project for a good long while haha, I had my fill.
I swear, the way you said “good morning, ladies” sounded so much like me, even my dog got excited because she thought I was talking to her 😂 Beautiful birds, and lovely coop/run. Your hubby’s chick noises were too funny! Enjoy your little flock. Chickens are so much fun ❤
Hahaha all my pets get their good mornings, so funny how your dog responded, mine get the hard core wiggle butts hahaha. So far I’m obsessed with the chickens! Loving having them around and sitting out with them after a long day I swear is better than any therapy.
You tried .maybe next time😊😊😊😊😊
Fingers crossed!
So I'm thinking your vine got zapped by cold. Kills it and the fruit won't ripen. Watermelons need time and heat so you want one that ripens earlier and can take a cooler climate. Dakotah Rose may do better in your area. Watermelons are a little iffy here in the PNW. Christmas watermelons work here. That is a variety, but there is a general category of watermelons you pick and store to eat later which may work for you. Maybe check in with local growers/master gardeners to get an idea of what works for your area. Adaptive seeds probably would be a good source.
I'm in South Carolina. My state is one of the largest commercial watermelon producers in the country. So a few things here. that vine was planted in March. It just didn't feel like producing until it was entirely too cold for watermelon. I grow other varieties but I want to try this variety. I am determined to grow this variety successfully. After 2 years it is now a personal mission because this variety seems to have something against me and I can't let it win.... so I will continue growing multiple varieties and whatever varieties sound good and have at least a couple black diamond vines to experiment with. Out last frost is in March and first frost end of November. The growing season is plenty long and hot enough for any variety, this one just hates me.
@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse That is bizarre! Yes it shouldn't give you any trouble there! 🤔 Well then, I'm not sure why it's doing that. I just assumed you lived elsewhere looking at the vine and knowing that they take longer than what works here. Also isn't it supposed to be a big melon? Did you direct sow or transplant? Sometimes they don't like transplanting and/or too late can slow it down. They're kinda like squash, you can start indoors but the timing has to be right. If they're too big they won't transplant out well.
@bdavis7801 it just hates me hahaha. But I'm stubborn so I'm not going to stop trying 🤣 I direct sew. I do have issues growing watermelon to full size though. Doesn't matter if I do everything perfect, my watermelons stay small even when fully ripe. On average half the expected size. I have tested my soil, followed all the advice, fertalized at the right times the right nutrients and have accepted the fact that I can't grow a 20lb+ watermelon haha but I can grow small and delicious ones ... just not the black diamond haha
@@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse Well good luck to you! I'm sure you'll be able to get it to work out.
Hey you should check out the candy that you can make from watermelon rinds and the unripe watermelon I saw it on a Mexican Cooking Channel however it could be from another country but I believe it was Mexican recipe
@nillsrozzy3985 I have made Watermelon rind candy before. It's good but 90% sugar hahaha. Doesn't taste like watermelon, usually flavored with lemon. The ones I make taste like lemonade but I don't make them often because it's A LOT OF sugar. And it takes daaayyysss to make.
Feed your water melon plants tobacco tea. Grow Tobacco plants and soak the leaves in water for. Week then feed it to plants leaves and all
Damn. That flick sound sounded too high pitched so that sucks. Keep up the amazing work though ❤️🤘🏻
Yea.... if the vine didn't die back for the winter, I would have left it longer. It is what it is but I am on a mission to grow this watermelon!!! Hahaha.
@@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse looking forward to your review on a beautiful and tasty one ❤️
Never heard of them.
I heard of them only a couple years ago and have been trying to grow one ever since haha
Bummer ! I know the feeling. It just sucks you have to wait till next year. That is what chaps my back side . I just want to fix it now . 😂oh well , next spring.
Hahaha yea, well this is the second failed year for the black diamond so hopefully third year will be my year haha. I can grow many things but man do I struggle with watermelon haha
You can let them sit at room temp for a few weeks before cutting. Gives them a little more time to ripen.
Unfortunately watermelons don’t ripen any further once cut from the vine like other melons.
Black diamonds are my favorite watermelons!!🍉
@wrinklesandsprinkles I have heard they are amazing but I haven’t had luck with them yet. I am bound and determined to grow a good one though so I can finally try it
@@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse I buy them from roadside vendors. They have gotten really expensive (just like everything else) this summer I paid $10.00 for one! It was worth it though. Good luck next summer.🤞🏼
Can you send some to me? I’ll pay right now
Oh those are long gone, they were delicious 😋
Clever tub hack. Love it! Good for you!
Love the ingenuity with the curing system and making do with what you have!
Thanks! It took some trial and error to figure out the best option and let me say, this wasn’t it haha. In my area we can’t have basements due to being below sea level so same goes for underground root cellars. I now cure with a tote, heat mat or heating blanket and a cup of water. That’s in my most recent video if yo want to check it out. You should see how I cured my garlic in years past so I didn’t stink up my house hahaha.
Awesome!!
Thanks!
Looks kinda shishito-ish
Your not wrong... they do look kind of simular but are a bit thinner and man do these pack a punch. Nothing mild about these peppers haha
In Turkey we call this the çekirdek, it is a part of our culture.
Looks like a Hatch chili to me
Time to Google because I have never heard of a hatch chili.. thanks!
Hmm, hatch chili is substantially bigger and pointer. This has a pretty blunt end and are fairly small.... I'll keep it in mind but I'm not sure that fits.
I'd say either a hatch chilli or pablano rojo.
I have never heard of a hatch chili.... time to Google, thanks!

Oyong kan
this call "maravillas" in Chile, It is a very famous snack
I planted garlic too early this year!! It's been so warm it's growing so much already! I'm so scared for it's longevity because it's my first time growing garlic!
You will probably be OK. Last year our frost came late and it was warm so my garlic grew a lot prior to frost and it did just fine. Put a nice thick layer of mulch on top of the soil to help insulate it. Thankfully garlic is pretty tolerant.
I would fight many wars for smudgy ❤
@s.watkiss101 she is so cute, the runt out of all thr girls, maybe half their size yet has the biggest attitude hahaha. She is fun sized to accommodate that sass and make her more lovable hahahah
That neck gets mighty fluffy when she’s being moody :)
She is just so dramatic 🤣
😂❤
Sassy little thing she is haha
Love this! I can’t wait to have an outdoor garden again!
The day will come when you will have an awesome outdoor garden!!! Until then, if you have a sunny spot and a planter pot, you would be surprised what you could grow! Garlic takes up next to no room at all 😊
Nice🤘 I planted grocery store bought garlic for the first time this year.😁
I think that is the best way to start! Grocery store garlic is the gateway garlic hahaha
What zone do you live in? Never mind I watched the video. Isn't it a little early to be planting in 8b?
Our first frost here is predicted November 21 and has been fairly consistent over the years coming right around thanksgiving. You can plant 4 to 6 weeks before first frost and I always aim for the 4 week mark.
Mine are the same. 😂❤
😂 and everyone always says they are garbage disposals hahaha
Sunset
My needle keeps getting clogged
Try going in at an angle more parallel with the stem. You might need a larger Guage needle if you continue having issues. Mine clogs from time to time at an 18 Guage but not too too bad. The 20 Guage I used before clogged all the time
Thank you, Garden. (I love it)
Well it did do all the hard work! I just gave the plants a place to do it ☺️
Totally off topic, but have you had your skin looked at by a dermatologist? I wouldnt want you to miss anything serious.
I have, I’m on top of it. I have Irish heritage so I always have freckles and I have an autoimmune disease that effects my joints, skin and especially my nail beds so I am no stranger to doctors, but I appreciate the concern ☺️
@@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse oh okay, it never hurts to look out for strangers ✌️✌️
@kyralindsey5885 I appreciate it 😊 not enough people with concern for others in this world anymore!
Fry it with salt
Those are some big taters OMG, guess just plant one and let the vine go crazy lol,, GG and great video,, I looked ahead and no part 2 to tell us how your curing setup turned omg, we must know
Well I’ll be putting out another sweet potato video on the next few weeks because it’s almost that time again!!!! I’m trying to be patient but I want to know what’s under there haha. I will absolutely share the flop that was that method of curing. Long story short, it didn’t work, couldn’t get the temp high enough so I ended up putting all the potato’s in a tote with a cup of water and wrapping the tote in a heated blanket and opening it daily to let fresh air in. A bit of a pain but it worked amazing. Going to try something similar this year with a seed starting heat mat now that I’m more prepared.
This whole time I could’ve just been growing these motherfuckers😂 ain’t no way I didn’t know sunflower seeds came from sunflowers
What u did after roasting the seeds
Eat all of them 😁
Could u share cooking with your harvest? - if u can ofc. Love ur garden
I Def need to share cooking more often but usually by then I’m hungry and just want to knock it out fast and eat and not worry about the camera haha. I have shared a few videos and shorts cooking with my harvest. If you check out my playlists they are all in the playlist (Garden to Kitchen recipes) ☺️
Bad worm. It does looks cute though.
Cute but super rude worm haha
oh my word you couldnt make him any cuter, so envious!
Such patience, love, and beautiful determination you have for your flock! And what a wonderful little flock you have...they are gorgeous! Thank you 🌻🌻🌻
Thank you 😊 my patients has paid off and they now exit and enter without any assistance. I find a lot of peace just spending time with them!
👾 LIKE THAT L-L-L
Every guy who grumpily says they don't want the damn [choose an animal] somehow inevitably becomes a pet-parent to them. It's like some bizarre yet wholesome universal law~
In my case, I'm the one saying no we can't have anymore "insert pet here" we are full hahaha. He is a big softy for all things critters, he just won't admit it out loud hahaha.
@@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse Ah, you have a closet marshmallow! 😊
😂🤣🤣 I guess I do hahaha
😂♥️
He might not admit it but he is a big softy ☺️
harvesting sunflowers is definitely Worthy. Thanks for the video
You bet!
I have a baja breeze clementine tree, 2 shishito pepper plants, and a bell pepper plant. The one fruit on the bell pepper plant is so heavy. Trying to get an avocado tree to grow. Wish I had more room to grow jalapenos! I love those! Thanks for sharing your fun inspiring garden.
Sounds like you have a lot of good things going! Look into vertical planters, many can grow peppers and may be a solution to your space limitations! I have tried growing avocado trees many times but my area gets a little too cold for them in the winter and I either forgot them outside on a night it got too cold or they got too big to bring inside and the cold got them 🤷🏼♀️ best of luck with yours!
They're not broken; they're smart! They're leaving the fruit as bait for tasty, tasty bugs~
You might be onto something 🤣
To help them go in at night put a light in the coop. As soon as everyone is on the roost shut it off. This helped my chicks at night. Beautiful babies you got. Nice coop set up too.
Thanks for the tip! After day 2 they thankfully figured it out and are old pros now but I will absolutely keep that in mind if, or should I say when chicken math gets me 😂
@@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse I started with 4 chicks in August of 2021. I have 41 now. And I have 15 chicks arriving at the end of month. Which will bring my chicken math to 50 hens and 6 roosters. Yes I've lost my mind.. lol
@JD-dh7bk 🤣🤣 dang chicken math got you real good hahaha. These are my first ever, got them the very last week of August. I already want more but I have to be strong!!!! Literally don't have the space for more on my 1/6th of an acre..... well at least not many more haha
😂😂😂 bougie chickens.
They really are! 🤣😅
You can eat them, and at very healthy, you can Make chutneys out of Ridge Gourd skin and make dal or dried curry .
Oh wow look at the size of those things! Do you think they would work as a ground cover and be kept for the folliage like a perennial plant? There is a neglected spot in my garden I have that is separate and it keeps getting overrun by weeds. I want to plant like 5-10 shoots I have now in the middle of spring and let it do whatever it wants, then maaybe think about harvesting them next year or whenever I can bother.
It would depend on your climate. I’m in South Carolina zone 8b and there is a good possibility if I left the roots/tubers in the ground that the foliage would come back next year but our ground just about never freezes. Outside of a couple years ago when a highly unusual hard freeze came through, I don’t think the ground has frozen in the last decade. Sweet potatoes do not tolerate a frozen ground. The foliage dies with the first frost but if the ground doesn’t freeze, they should come back. It’s related to morning glories believe it or not. Is the area your considering shaded or sunny? Does the soil stay damp or dry out? I have some ideas for edible ground cover plants for different situations if you are in a colder area
@@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse I actually have a huge one growing right next to my house with flowers all over! The leaves are quite similar to sweet potato so it makes sense... Morning Glories usually die in other regions of Turkey and regrow from seeds but here the winter is just soft enough for them to barely survive if it is not a particularly cold one, so I feel like the sweet potatoes will do just fine. Though I would really appreciate some ground cover plant suggestions anyways for the other parts of my garden. Especially anything that can withstand drought since I am mostly there only for some of the summer to water the plants and the summers get quite harsh with no rain in the Mediterranean climate. There are both sunny and shady spots.
@JeenReet well for sunny areas, everbearing strawberries would make a good ground cover, stevens or American cranberry is a good sprawler, non edible ice plant is a good option and despite being closely related to succulents, they can handle some chill weather and they do well in dry areas. Nasturtiums are an edible flowering plant that re seed themselves easily and grow in a wide variety of light and soil types, creating thyme is another like that. Purple Heart is not edible but hearty and a wonderful pop of color. For shady areas, wintergreen/ Teaberry, alpine strawberry (although the alpine strawberry doesn’t have much taste), you might be too warm for hostas but it’s an option to look into. There are a bunch of non edible shade loving plants as well but I’m not too familiar with them personally. Hopefully this will give you some ideas to look into
@@ChaosMakersHobbyHouse Thanks for all the suggestions! I have the purple heart there and a bunch of other tradescantias that do okay but are not doing a great job spreading, but other than that these are all new to me. I now have a lot of googling to do!
