    The signing of Ron Simmons put FSU on the map. The NFL thought he was too small, but he was an awesome college NG much like Rob Waldrop at Arizona in the Desert Swarm defense and Steve Emtman from Washington's awesome 1991 defense. These guys were unblock able.

      Na bud Bobby dadgum Bowdens is FSU all the way
      But I figure the older Cane's fans watched Ron DAMN Simmons the same way younger FSU guys watched Dwayne the Rock Johnson ... Shit was cool I hate Miami but I spent way too much time trying to figure out how he lifted the people's eyebrow and I'd be lying if I told you I didn't run around telling my little brothers to shut their mouths and know their roles which I found out was actually something Simmons would tell people back stage and the Rock was just smart enough to see the genius in it and took it into the ring ... The Rock was the shit we all loved Rocky and I'm sure that's how Cane's fans feel about Simmons

    I played football at Tenn. Tech, a Div. 1-AA school, and one of my team mates played against Simmons in the North-South all star game at SW DeKalb HS in '77 (first televised then). My Cuban room mate from Hialeah, FL injured his knee and transferred to FL ST, and wrote me a post card telling me how awesome Simmons was. I think he said that Simmons ran a 4.5 forty, and benched around 520 max. I played high school in the middle Georgia area, and grew up in Warner Robins. I heard about him my senior year. Moving him from linebacker to noseguard freed this beast of a player from having to diagnose plays, to just ripping and destroying...which he did in fine fashion.

    • @richardmiller3146
      @richardmiller3146 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I saw him bench 550 at Warner Robins High when he was on break from FSU. I don't doubt the 40 time, the guy was fast. Your analysis is spot on. Having to diagnose plays, drop into coverage and other things LB's must do would have slowed him down. His specialty was literally seek and destroy. Watch the video closely and on several plays after he busts through the line at full speed he grabs the RB with his right hand and a fraction of a second later has the QB in his left hand neutralizing both players. I believe I saw him cause 2-3 fumbles in the video doing that. He was just an absolute beast and one if the most fun to watch defensive players ever. Probably THE MOST fun interior defensive lineman to watch.

    • @richardmiller3146
      @richardmiller3146 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And he was very fast. Look how many plays he made along the line of scrimmage near the sidelines. I think it was too late in NFL to learn all a LB has to do when in college they just cut him loose to wreak havoc (which he did).

    • @scarletmacaw
      @scarletmacaw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Main reason he didn’t make it was because he tore up his knee when he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and once your knees go, so goes any hopes of making it in the NFL, especially when you are a rookie with such a debilitating injury . Otherwise he would’ve made a great MLB.

    It's too bad that they didn't keep him at inside/middle linebacker - which is what he originally was before they moved him to the Defensive Line.

      He was injured his Junior year, as I recall it was an intentional illeagal crackback block, where he was stood up and a tight end hit him in the legs. Even playing from the bench at times, he was a consensus all American.
      There's a line in "Big Bad Ron" were he comes in to help make a final stand...
      Also at a time when weight lifting was not a big part of College football, a big point was made of us playing the strongest team we would face, OU in the bowl, Oklahoma had 14 players who benched over 300lbs... Ron was benching 500! and was also one of the fastest players on the team, not he is Nose Guard and several of the tackles in this are on the sidelines.
