- Sonic Robo Blast v2.2 just came out yesterday! I haven't played SRB2 in a couple years, so I couldn't tell you the exact changes from last version, but wow has this game changed since the last time I played it! This is a complete playthrough of the story mode while also collecting all the emeralds to get Super Sonic.

Yes it could. The Saturn could run Doom (albeit pretty badly since no one bothered to optimise it for the console) and this runs on the same engine. Granted, it wouldn’t perform as well on Saturn, but it would be able to run for sure.

@@semvision Looks reasonably doable for the Saturn. Large quadrilateral surfaces, with low geometric density. The long distances could be an issue though.

It isn't a Doom mod at all. It runs on a modified version of the Doom Legacy engine but it's not built around Doom

This is like saying that Portal is an Half-Life 2 mod because it uses the same engine.
The SRB2 engine is so different there's barely anything related to Doom Legacy left in the code... Kinda like how Half-Life gold Source engin is barely compared to Quake's engine
It's jaw-dropping just how far this game has come in the last 15 years. At this point, it legit feels like it could've been a genuine 3D Sonic game for the Saturn.

I'd love to see these guys get hired by Sega to make an official 3D Sonic game.
What Christian Whitehead and co. did for 2D Sonic, I really think Sonic Team Junior can do for 3D Sonic.

Imagine going back in time to the early 90s, getting a job at Sega Technical Institute and porting this to the Saturn.... you'd potentially change gaming history.
could've possibly saved the Saturn, maybe the Dreamcast, and Sega would continue to make consoles to this day, never going third party, similar to Nintendo (iirc)

It's incredible how they have managed to surprise us all over these years.
This game just got better with the years and versions. It's because things like this that I thank Sega for letting masterpieces like this a chance to show what they have to offer.

When I first came across this game years and years ago, I genuinely fought it was a PC port of some Sonic Saturn game. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it was something fanmade.

Unfortunately, loops won't be actually be getting in the game. The closest we could get is using upsidedown gravity to emulate you're actually rolling on the loops

Unless if automated, loops are pretty much pointless as you can just skip through it. Not to mention it will require a lot more spritework, unless if youre forced to spindash through it, or if it automatically forces the camera into 2D mode.

this game really means a lot to me, i was part of the community in 2008/2009, those were good times. i used to make my own custom WADs(levels) for fun and go on multiplayer servers.
You unlocked Dream Hill Zone show it! :D coolest 3D sonic i've seen. works so well and the music is fantastic!

I have this on my garbage computer with one of the weakest graphics cards and it runs with 200 fps by garbage computer I mean windows 7 this game runs on like windows XP not kidding

i'm really impressed that they have a Nights segment running in the doom engine. And perfectly, too.
This looks fantastic, really creative special stages and the overall execution is a brilliant blend of 2D and 3D! Very cool! This and Sonic Utopia are looking good!

What I really love about this update are the graphical improvements to the game, new soundtrack and the implementation of inclines, hills and slopes. I remember Robo Blast 2's level design originally being mostly flat, even terrain, but now the level design looks more detailed and there's even set-pieces in various levels. The most notable one I remember and love the most was Castle Eggman Act 1, where you're trying to quickly head to the goalpost before the entire castle collapses. Before the castle started collapsing, the music was just completely gone all of a sudden and I thought the game's music glitched or something until I reached the part where the castle started to collapse. Case in point, this still remains as one of my favorite 3D Sonic fan-games.

Wow I first played this 12-13 years ago 😢😢😢😢 those were the days. All those character and level pack mods were phenomenal

I miss the good old days when they still allowed RP maps. I have so many Mario 64 levels, Chao gardens, cities, etc that I used to play online. Even met quite a few friends that way. Then one day they put a stop to it all, and threatened to ban anyone who still did so... Then I got banned from the forums for having a few typeos in my posts lol. Man, hard to believe that was over 10 years ago.
They still do allow RP maps, they just gotta go in the single player levels and Mark your server as casual when it comes to master server. They have really relaxed when it comes to that kind of stuff. All the level requires is a goal post to be somewhere
It's been a looooong time since the ban on RP/hangout maps was removed. Probably about 10 years ago, actually. They added a Casual room to the MS so that servers like that can thrive without them getting in the way of people who just want to play the game.
I do remember having a sneaky way of getting RP/hangout servers on the MS back in the 1.09.4 days which involved a bit of malicious compliance. I'd just host a regular server with regular intentions, and if enough players *requested* to hangout, I'd call a vote. If it passed, I just pulled the server from the MS, and let everyone in the server enjoy the hangout. Because I wasn't on the MS anymore, the rule I was about to break no longer applied.

This is my whole childhood right here. Me and my sister always played it in multiplayer.
This is an amazingly cool style of gameplay using the Doom type of engine or the look of it. It really works here. Why hasn't Sega go on to this yet?

I've never actually played SRB2 before, so I'm jumping straight into the newer version. I really like the level design and how creative it is, though it's kind of hard getting a feel for the controls. SRB2 recommends keyboard and mouse but I do better with a controller since I have more accuracy with the analog movement when it comes to platforming.
Also, this fan game is surprisingly tough, died more than I would like to admit. :))
Man, this game looks absolutely fantastic! And there's a lot of good game design too! This is, in my opinion, how Sonic in 3D should be. My only criticism would be the enemies, since the areas are so open, they can be easily avoided, making them feel kinda pointless. Maybe there will be more secluded corridors, or maybe there will be more enemies with projectile attacks, or enemies that chase you, something to make them a nuisance enough to encourage people to attack them. Then again, I'm still at the beginning of the video, so I'm probably wrong here. Everything else though, is near perfect.
Edit: Yep, nevermind, there's also a lot of enemy variety, it's all perfect.
To honestly think I never knew about this game until very recently! Thanks to it's sister game, SRB2K, I've found another great game to play on the side of other AAA ones~ And it holds up just as well as they do!
And I never knew this had been going on for so long! I wish I knew of it sooner so I could've watched it evolve over time.

Wow, this game changed so much since the last time I played it in 2007, certainly interesting to see how much life was added to the familiar level designs. Still like the original music more but overall this is a huge improvement.

Yes, it still does.
It basically never did. Even back in the late 90s and early 2000s it ran on a modified Doom Legacy, which itself is modified.
EDIT:TO be clear, it still runs on a modified Doom Legacy, but it basically isn't Doom in any way beyond the software renderer and the way the game data is stored.

Another way to get all the emeralds, is to beat the game than keep replaying the 1st stage over and over. It's really fast if you do that.

Castle Eggman Zone is the best level hands down. Designers of these map understood that classic Sonic is about momentum, not speed.
From a design standpoint this shows me the Saturn coulda done a good Sonic game :)

the bonus stage in this game is just like Nights for Saturn. Sega was too busy creating something that none remembers, Nights, a cool game for the time, but nothing like sonic.

3D Blast was isometric 3D, which is completely different than this.

Wow, this game is just... uncanny... seriously, this entire project is over 20 years old and is still in production. I wanna ask a question who's more informed than me, is the game finished? I mean, are all of the levels implemented? Or is there more to come? Well I know that sonic team jr. will continue fixing the bugs and all but I'm intrested if it's technically already done
I think this is pretty much the finished core levels, they might add more outside the story. I'm not 100% sure about that as I'm not the most up to date with SRB2
