The scene in the parking garage where Kyle is explaining what the Terminator is to Sarah for the first time is one of my favorite scenes of all time. His delivery is perfect.

Terminator 1 & 2 are the type of films that I watch and always become “awed” by the thought of the technical ability of the time. The 70’s & 80’s was just an explosion of creativity and expansion in the film industry. The Terminator is just one of the foundations of that idea.

I love "The Terminator" because it's basically a science fiction slasher film. Plus the Terminator being inspired by Michael Myers is a pretty cool connection. T1 is the only 1 out of the franchise that can be considered a horror film.
James Cameron's original vision for the terminator is somebody who wouldn't stand out in a crowd. Somebody you'll pass on the street without giving a second glance. When you consider terminators are created and built to infiltrate the resistance then Lance Hendrickson's terminator is a better choice then Arnie's

Pretty much my favorite movie of all time. Certainly my favorite Arnie flick for sure. Watched it probably 100 times as a kid before T2 was even made. One of my favorite film scores as well. Brad Fiedel is a criminally underrated composer.

I am really glad that James Cameron had that fever dream. It’s one of the best sci-fi movies ever not only for special effects and the puppeteers also the musical score for the movie the casting everything came together! Just like Home Alone, they had two really great films then they decided to push their luck and made 4 more sequels all of which were varying levels of crap.

It was more that as the sequels were made they kept moving further and further away from the heart of what the first movie was, a horror movie. Even the second movie moves away from it slightly by adding humor but it was still great. The others? more humor and retreading, less dark and more action. By that time, these sequels were MILES away from the first film and their mostly non -R ratings prove it.
Oh i hate all home alone movies. So so so so stupid even when i was a tot. How does someone forget their kid??? How does someone give a bed wetting kid coke to drink? How does someone run into the same damn theives in another state? How does someone not know their kid is on another plane???? I was 7 walk away from my mom to another store and got side tracked by a piano, she knew exactly where to find me cause she knew i was attracted to music.the home alone parents dont know beans about their kid….or the other kids. Whether you like his films or not, you have to put James Cameron at the front of greatest directors ever. He puts everything into his movies and always looks to push the boundaries of technology and special effects. JC is a cinematic GOD. Once in a lifetime genius that will never be seen again. Not many directors that get to his status.

I will always remember my first watch of terminator , VHS rental , in 1985 , My cousins way older than us started this movie in the basement , it was a game changer , and started some nightmares but they where worth it. 😈😃
Fantastic film, great cast, good use of practical effects and stop motion (especially considering the some what low budget). The first film created a whole mythology behind the film's characters and their motivations, going forward into the sequel(T2.) Both films are classics, and both hero and villain became iconic, and rightfully so. Kyle Reese protecting Sarah Conner from the Terminator, with a concealed shotgun, from underneath his trench coat, in the famous night club scene is brilliant, and perfectly displays his agility and speed from year's of fighting a brutal futuristic war against evil humanoid machines armed with laser guns. The original two films, are as close to perfect as you can get.( Still can't believe that Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to play the Reese character, before he was cast as the Terminator, if things went Arnold's way it would of been a very different film. Lol)
Always remember that scene when the Terminator goes in there and cleans out that police precinct. I also like the scene where she's dreaming about the future and that one Terminator comes in there and lays waste to everybody with that 50 caliber laser machine gun.

I saw the movie for the first time in 1990, I was 7 years old. I remember the trepidation I felt as Sarah and Reese ran from the killing machine with its cold stare and fear-inducing face through the dark streets of the city. From that moment, my interest in science fiction and horror films began.
James Cameron is one of my favorite film directors and I’ve always had a deep respect since for The Terminator since I was a teenager because of how it was shot and made and the literal dedication he had to his vision of what he wanted.
This was the first R-rated movie I ever saw in a movie theater and man, did it blow my mind. The next day in school I was telling all my friends about it and quoting Arnold from the flick. I was the cool kid for about 6 months until it came out on cable and everyone else got to see how awesome it was...it was a good time🙂.
Terminator 1 is the best in the franchise combination of action and horror you see Sarah Connor arc from this regular girl to a Badass at the end of the movie and to see Arnold Schwarzenegger as the villain with no remorse no feelings just a killing machine was amazing 10/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of my favourite thing is just how buff Linda Hamilton got for Terminator 2, it was a helluva commitment at the time, and exactly what someone would do if they thought the end of the world as we know it was coming.

Great movie, great storyline and casting too! 1984 was good year and I do miss the spirit of 80s - And this The Terminator soundtrack still rocks on my cd player 🤘😎 Watching this one on vhs and beta.
Great to see how this genre classic came together. I remember going to see this film when it opened in London (Leicester Square Theatre). Loved it so much I went to see it three more times when it got a wider release. As I recall, it got good reviews across the board for the action, pacing and the performances. Arnold especially. The downbeat ending with Sara driving off towards the storm is one of the great closing scenes. This was very much an adult film and I have to admit that I have never cared for the sequels as they were made for the lucrative teenage audience and had far less of a bite.
Terminator is one of those rare moments where the planets aligned and everything went perfectly for all the people involved, especially with Cameron. So many things could go wrong and it worked just fine with all the people putting out their best performances, be it the actors or the rest of the crew. Cameron of course is the maestro who showed again and again it was him bringing it all together.
Amazing video review/ analysis. Got to know even more trivia than I thought I already knew about this low budget classic. But I'm very surprised you missed out the really interesting bit where Orion asked Cameron to just end the movie after the gas truck blows up, as in just cut to credits right away, of which Cameron objected & storm out of the meeting room.

He does sound like a petty a-hole. If Cameron is guilty of plagiarism then where does that leave films like Star Wars, which were copied from Hidden Fortress, Where Eagles Dare, and 633 Squadron? In reality it's practically impossible to do anything that's totally original. Try as you might to do something original, there's always going to be something out there that's similar.
Apparently he wasn't wrong in thinking the movie plagiarized his work, as two different juries also found that Cameron had (consciously or not) stolen Ellison's writing.

Love me some Cameron. Dude gives all he has into his movies almost to a fault, see Abyss’s disastrous production. And even though Alien is my favorite of the franchise, it’s quite amazing what he did with Aliens. That has to be one of the best sequels of all time.

Even Cameron being… moody (to say the least), I really admire his skills as an artist, his pieces of art scattered in low budget movies are memorable. And I also admire how hard he worked and how much effort he puts in his creations. Well, I also admire his loyalty to friends and coworkers. I can’t admit I REALLY admire someone who directed Titanic… I saw Terminator on VHS, what a great time, I miss renting movies by the art boxes alone and no other information about it.
The industry's a funny thing: the hurdles this movie went through are the very thing that made the final product what it is. Had the studio been estatic about his vision throughout and provided more money, it likely would not have had the same authentic ruggedness. And casting, as always, tends to partially be a product of timing/availability. Christopher Reeve as Kyle and Lea Thompson as Sarah might've made for an okay movie, but may've very well kept it from being a classic. Not because they're bad but simply because who knows what butterfly effect it would've had on various creative decisions each day.
I like the first terminator movie but I think I like terminator 2 more. I also feel like terminator 2 is the best film in the franchise. The first terminator is still a great film and is definitely a classic.
It still cracks me up how much the adult John Connor looks the way Bob Geldoff looked like Pink in the second half of the movie version of The Wall lol

Being low budget some how makes the Film even better. Don't get me wrong, T2 is an amazing Movie, but the rundown low of the original makes it feel more authentic.
A lot of people diss the animatronics of Arnold in the 1st film and I admit the 2 shots of his "eye repair" do not match up. Still, these effects work for me since Arnold is supposed to be synthetic and it definitely looks like it on the puppet. That puppet has a very Uncanny Valley look to it. While it's not the most realistic, that puppet has got to be one of the creepiest visuals in any Terminator film. Can you imagine it being replaced with CGI like they would do today? ugg.
Barbara is the head professor at my UCLA program where I received an MFA in film/tv producing. I am very happy to see her get the accolades. I will let her see this 100%.
Terminator 1&2, Alien & Aliens, Godfather 1&2 are the only series of films I can think of where the already excellent first film was probably even bettered by an amazing sequel
I'm not sure I buy the idea that Cameron conceived of the liquid metal Terminator way back in 1983, I've read the original drafts and over the years consumed all of Cameron's interviews around this time and there's no mention of it. It's only in interviews post-T2 that Cameron says this.
Maybe he was afraid someone would take inspiration and perhaps steal the concept. He already was accused of plagiarism. It was his baby. He didn't want to reveal his visions too early in fear of loosing them... Maybe.
Interesting that you mention Battle Beyond the Stars and the Piranha film--and Roger Corman. Not long ago I took an Intro to Cinema course that focused on the films of independent director John Sayles, who also worked with Corman at some point.
When I was a kid, my mom and dad used to go out Friday and Saturday nights and rent this film for us to watch I loved it that much. In the end the guy at the video shop said why dont you just buy from me we rented it out that much. I was about 10 years old at the time but the film was rated 18. Did me no harm haha

So many things could go wrong and it worked just fine with all the people putting out their best performances, be it the actors or the rest of the crew. Cameron of course is the maestro who showed again and again it was him bringing it all together.

Amazing video review/ analysis. Got to know even more trivia than I thought I already knew about this low budget classic. But I'm very surprised you missed out the really interesting bit where Orion asked Cameron to just end the movie after the gas truck blows up, as in just cut to credits right away, of which Cameron objected & storm out of the meeting room.
Harlan Ellison tells this story in an interview, where he was told by people in the industry a movie was being made with a script reading like a number of his short stories. He then found himself in conflict with James Cameron, Gale Anne Hurd, and Hemdale Films when he tried to find that out
He does sound like a petty a-hole. If Cameron is guilty of plagiarism then where does that leave films like Star Wars, which were copied from Hidden Fortress, Where Eagles Dare, and 633 Squadron? In reality it's practically impossible to do anything that's totally original. Try as you might to do something original, there's always going to be something out there that's similar.

James Cameron sold the rights of The Terminator in 1984 as part of the deal in having full control over making it. Arnie convinced Carolco to buy the rights so they could make T2.

And even though Alien is my favorite of the franchise, it’s quite amazing what he did with Aliens. That has to be one of the best sequels of all time.

Scene: A dark night on a street in a nondescript city. A lone pole light being the only source of illumination. Suddenly, a orb of lightning forms, slowly morphing into a White 1993 Ford Bronco.
You gotta love the synth musical score for T1. It fits perfectly with the T-800 and makes the horror more effective, especially during chase scenes.
11:16 Poor Linda, that's why she's so hardened in Terminator 2. She had to toughen up not for the role, but for what James Cameron might have in store for her.
She was my fitness hero! The managers used to play T2 in the TV's facing the cardio rooms. Inspiration like no other, for sure.

What a thrill. I have all the Terminator films.
The industry's a funny thing: the hurdles this movie went through are the very thing that made the final product what it is. Had the studio been estatic about his vision throughout and provided more money, it likely would not have had the same authentic ruggedness.
And casting, as always, tends to partially be a product of timing/availability. Christopher Reeve as Kyle and Lea Thompson as Sarah might've made for an okay movie, but may've very well kept it from being a classic. Not because they're bad but simply because who knows what butterfly effect it would've had on various creative decisions each day.
I like the first terminator movie but I think I like terminator 2 more. I also feel like terminator 2 is the best film in the franchise. The first terminator is still a great film and is definitely a classic.
It still cracks me up how much the adult John Connor looks the way Bob Geldoff looked like Pink in the second half of the movie version of The Wall lol

Being low budget some how makes the Film even better. Don't get me wrong, T2 is an amazing Movie, but the rundown low of the original makes it feel more authentic.
A lot of people diss the animatronics of Arnold in the 1st film and I admit the 2 shots of his "eye repair" do not match up. Still, these effects work for me since Arnold is supposed to be synthetic and it definitely looks like it on the puppet. That puppet has a very Uncanny Valley look to it. While it's not the most realistic, that puppet has got to be one of the creepiest visuals in any Terminator film. Can you imagine it being replaced with CGI like they would do today? ugg.
Barbara is the head professor at my UCLA program where I received an MFA in film/tv producing. I am very happy to see her get the accolades. I will let her see this 100%.

I'm not sure I buy the idea that Cameron conceived of the liquid metal Terminator way back in 1983, I've read the original drafts and over the years consumed all of Cameron's interviews around this time and there's no mention of it. It's only in interviews post-T2 that Cameron says this.
Maybe he was afraid someone would take inspiration and perhaps steal the concept. He already was accused of plagiarism. It was his baby. He didn't want to reveal his visions too early in fear of loosing them... Maybe.
Interesting that you mention Battle Beyond the Stars and the Piranha film--and Roger Corman. Not long ago I took an Intro to Cinema course that focused on the films of independent director John Sayles, who also worked with Corman at some point.

When I was a kid, my mom and dad used to go out Friday and Saturday nights and rent this film for us to watch I loved it that much. In the end the guy at the video shop said why dont you just buy from me we rented it out that much. I was about 10 years old at the time but the film was rated 18. Did me no harm haha
