    Oh... yippee.. I get to talk about this now. Hooray?
    Because the world of videogames can't stop drowning in gasoline for one hot minute, we've got to talk about the "Gamers" who spend less time playing games than they do finding people to attack and threaten online.
    Do they even play games, or is this their whole life? Either way, a gaggle of idiots is currently harassing voice actor Laura Bailey for something she didn't do. She literally didn't do it, her character did, and she's getting the blame.
    Why are they going after her? Why are they so incredibly pathetic? Why do people who claim not to hate women behave exactly like people who hate women? And what have "AAA" publishers done to curb the hate in their own communities? Sigh... let's talk about it.

      I'm not sure why, but Iwan Rheon seemed to be overlooked as Ramsay Bolton. As awful a bastard as any you'll find in GOT, and the internet hated the character's guts, but he was actually a favourite in my viewing group for how hammy and irredeemably evil he was in the Emperor Palpatine mold.

The was a female level designer intern, I don't even think she got paid for her 3 month internship and her last name started with an A, you know, first letter of the alphabet. At that studio, there were too many ego problems and politics about the credits, so they decided that it was just "Studio Name Team" followed by everybody's name in alphabetic order (you know where I'm going with it).
    So one moron who didn't like our game, decided to track her down and harass her on facebook, threaten her and call her horrible things, because she was the first name on the list and was a woman. For starters, the actors don't choose how their character acts. The writer does. In a video game, the designer and/or animation director may have some influence in how it's all presented, I suppose... but the actor's job is to convey the character that is handed to them, to imagine that character's tone and body language (where applicable) as they live through the story handed to them by the writer(s). But hating the writers won't help either, because fiction isn't real and a story dictated by its most angry fans would suck balls.

    • @hazukichanx408

      @@PedricCuf Excellent point. Modern society is built on a number of fallacies - "if you don't make money, you're not valuable", for instance (tell that to the person who dragged you to the hospital when you had a stroke for a fat paycheck of $0), or "if you're not better than most people, you're not good enough" (what are the bottom three or four billion people supposed to do about that, exactly?), or "if you don't admit defeat, you haven't lost, and losing is the worst thing in the world" (just... no). We, the human race, need to start detecting, acknowledging, and correcting these fallacies, starting with our own minds and then reaching out - in a friendly and respectful manner where possible, best success rate - to others as voices of reason. We don't have to settle for a crappy world where people don't respect, understand or even care about each other. We can give that to others, and in at least some cases, receive it in return... and who doesn't want to be respected, understood and cared about?^^

    To those seeing ads:
    He doesn't run ads himself at all. Someone must have claimed it and is monetizing it. It'll be 2 weeks before the claim to the video is dropped due to no further action by whoever claimed it. The claimer has no chance of gaining actual rights to the video because it is OBVIOUSLY fair-use, but TH-cam's policy gives the CLAIMER the benefit of the doubt and 2 weeks of ad revenue while the content creator is just SOL for that period.
    There have been several Jimquisitions on the subject. Jim actually learned how to avoid the issue by goading TWO claimers into trying for it, which makes the video revert back to the content creator since both claimers can't monetize it at the same time. I don't know what the current status is with all this, but obviously whatever Jim is doing didn't work this time.
    I commented this elsewhere but I was seeing more people comment on it so there you go.

How people got the idea that he is some kind of hero, or a truly good man, is beyond me. We can sympathize with him to an extent, absolutely, but that doesn't excuse his actions.

      @@crazydud3380 - I don't know about that. Joel and Ellie on their worst days did what they did to survive. They didn't hunt down and torture people for some supposed slight.
      I'm not going to say that Ellie and Joel aren't vicious because they absolutely are, but Joel and Ellie never repaid someone who saved their lives by torturing anyone to death in front of their loved one while they begged for them to stop.
      Abby IS a monster. Her father wasn't tortured, he was shot because he was going to murder Ellie. If they woke her up and got her consent then he would have less of a case, but as it stands he wanted to murder someone in cold blood, and then threatened to kill Joel rather than let Joel have her. He was shot for good reason. If he would have let her go then he wouldn't have gotten shot.
      We will ignore the numerous children that man killed all while failing to create a vaccine and if that makes him any more or less deserving of his fate.
      Everyone Joel tortured was because they threatened him or those he loved, Ellie never tortured anyone until AFTER watching Joel be tortured and killed in front of her.
      Nobody is innocent, but Abby is without a doubt a monster. And if Ellie becomes a monster it is because Abby made her into one by the (undeserved) trauma she put Ellie through. After Joel literally saved her life.
      I know what the game was trying to do, but Abby was a monster how can you empathize with someone capable of doing something like that in the manner she did it after Joel saved her life?

      @kathleendelcourt8136 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@crazydud3380 I wouldn't say it was better written, it was just 100% intended and designed to make you love Ellie and Joel. It's funny to see so many people repeating "they tried very hard to make us love Abby but it failed, I still hate her". The devs CHOSE to show us the darkest side of her personality as her introduction in the story, they CHOSE to have her kill their beloved Joel, and in her story arc her cold personality, which is again a CHOICE of the developers, works against her while in fact she's following somewhat noble goals. They intentionaly made her hard to like on the surface and she only opens up late in her story arc, that was a choice, while in the first game they worked hard to make a very questionable character like Joel lovable from the first minutes (they killed his lovely daughter right at the begining to make sure you sympathize with him immediately), and that was also a choice. Hell if they really want to see what it is to try very hard to make you like a character they should play the first TLOU again, with their eyes open this time.
      And they worked so hard toward that goal in the first game that, like you said, people (myself included) sympathized with Joel and some even completely overlooked his actions (and I'm not just talking about what he did in the hospital, he makes questionable actions throughout the game). I actually have more respect for what they did in Part 2 with Abby, they didn't try to sell her so much that you'd completely forget that she isn't perfect. Writing in TLOU2 has its flaws but in Abby's case the mistake is twofold and mostly unrelated to how she's written: they oversold Joel in the first game, his relationship with Ellie overshadowed the true nature of his actions, then fans over sympathized, overconnected with him, they
      idealized him so much that whoever killed him would never have a chance to earn their respect no matter what happens next in the game. And I could add a third aspect, like Jim said in the video. The big man, the hero, got killed by a woman, a muscular woman at that (a non-fuckable, non-desirable woman according to their conception of what a woman is supposed to be and look like).

Then went to Twitter where they could see Laura's profile, and see that she looks completely different than the character. With the soap opera thing there's ALMOST (not really, but almost) an explanation. Because there, the character they play looks like the person, but in different clothes. It's still FUCKIN' STUPID, but there they at least look the same. There, they could be found in a way that has nothing to do with their name. All you see is "Oh that's Jack Fuckwad from Smucker Street!" or whatever. You don't actively see that Jack Fuckwad is actually named Samuel Reed. You don't have to actively search out "Samuel Reed" to tell Jack Fuckwad to eat a dick.
      Is any of it excusable, even then? FUCK NO. But it's at least a slightly more realistic thought pattern.
      Here, instead, you play the game, see Abby. Abby looks like Abby. Abby's name is not Laura, and Abby does not look like Laura.
      Then, you have to track down, one way or another, who Abby's voice actor is. You are actively informed that Abby is not Laura. Laura provides Abby's voice, and only her voice. They are otherwise separate. You now know Laura.
      Then, you have to track down a connection to Laura, like her twitter. You are, in this step, openly admitting that Laura is her name She is not Abby. You are getting pictures of Not-Abby left and right. The avatar is Not-Abby. The description states "Voice Actor". The entire page is distinctly, 100% "Not Abby".
      Then, you call Laura a bitch for murdering [person] because that's something SHE did and SHE is a terrible person for what SHE did. She, Laura. That thing she did. You frequently use the word "you" because you're talking to Laura, who is totally the same person (despite the past several steps clearly showing that they're not).
      How?

      None of this is new, the little girl that played the possessed girl in The Exorcist (Linda Blair) was for years after the movie though of by the general public as a demon girl and she received threats for her role; Considering that The Exorcist spawned intense audience reactions ranging anywhere from fainting to vomiting, it's no wonder that controversy would follow the film's release. After the film premiered, one of the primary complaints from concerned critics was that The Exorcist would spark a belief in paranormal topics among viewers, such as exorcisms. Considering that Linda Blair's deeply convincing and horrifying performance is the focus of the film, many misplaced their anger on the young actress.
      Blair stated that, despite her age, she wasn't spared any of the criticisms facing the film or her performance. Blair was accused of glorifying Satan by playing Regan, and as a result, she received tons of death threats. According to Blair, "I had many people approach me that raised fear in everyone around me. I was very well protected. The police were hired to live at my house." In the same interview, she claimed that people would follow her down the street to heckle her about her role in the film.
      Despite demonstrating her impressive acting capabilities in The Exorcist, Linda had a difficult time getting cast for roles that didn't cast her as a helpless victim. For example, she reprized her role as Regan in Exorcist II: The Heretic. But before that, there was the 1974 television drama Born Innocent, where Blair played the role of Chris Parker, a young girl who runs from her abusive family. Eventually, she's forced to live in a girl's juvenile detention center where the other girls abuse her. Only a year after Born Innocent, Blair was cast as Sarah T. in Sarah T. - Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic. Here, Blair's character grapples with her parents' recent divorce, as well as her feelings of inadequacy, ultimately turning her to alcohol to cope.

      Ah yes.....I actually enjoyed CatShitOne. It gave me something I yearned for: a modern war setting with anthro animals.
      The one thing about furries that intrigues me. When I first discovered furries I thought about the potential of anthro policemen and anthro soldiers being able to sniff out bombs and targets, and lynxs being able to detect and hit targets in hard to see places thanks to their ears, but being kept far away from firefights and bombing runs. Or a tank crew of moles digging into the ground through the floor hatch after their tank goes kaput. Or a bat or eagle fighter pilot carrying on the fight after his/her plane gets destroyed. Same for a gunship pilot. Or a crew of sharks and orcas escaping to recrew another destroyer or cruiser after their ship's rudder was damaged and a hail of shells were descending on their craft.
      But unfortunately that hasn't been severely tapped into. Instead relegating to stuff about sex and genuinely weird crap.
      Though there are some artists that make some good stuff. And it's strange how attractive they can make these cartoonish animals looks with a few tweaks. Check Miles DF for examples. And maybe.....just maybe...Koul Fardreamer.....

    I'm someone who has had an issue of actually being able to tell the difference between characters and actors before, especially when I was younger. It's embarrassing to admit but frankly my embarrassment is not nearly as important as the chance to maybe help a person or two who is like me. If you are and you're reading this comment, I'll give you a tactic I used to help separating the two in your mind:
    First, clear your mind except for the concept that the slate is clean, you've never met this person before. Immerse yourself in this concept as if it was a world you inhabit. Second, look up the actor doing something mundane and harmless, and repeat to yourself that this is who that person is. You know this person, you know their job, you know they aren't actually hurting anybody. All that's left is for the rest of you to know it too. If you notice intrusive thoughts, *don't blame yourself*, and *don't blame yourself for blaming yourself*. You're trying to build a new habit, it takes time.
    Even if a bit simplistic, I hope this helps as a framework for noticing and responding to strong emotions in a more mindful way. For something more in-depth, I recommend looking up DBT.

    • @Blirre
      @Blirre 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I never had a huge problem, but when I was younger I didn't really understand acting, and actors in the 90s were strongly typecast which made it easy to assume that that's who they really were. But for me it helps to watch interviews. For example Lena Headey is a real darling in interviews and it's impossible to see her as Cercei. Somehow harassing a voice actor is doubly weird because they don't even have the same face and body. How do you confuse them?

    • @NoirRaven
      @NoirRaven 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Human brains literally cannot tell the difference between fiction and reality, which is why so many tend to hate the actors who play such awful, bratty characters. It takes selfdecipline in order to tell the difference and treat these people fairly but most don't have that discipline, gamerboys especially.
      Edit: people are assuming I struggle with telling the difference between reality and fiction, because I'm aware of a relatively recent psychological fact about the human mind and everyone's reacting as if I've insulted them by it, even though they claim to not be affected by this problem.
      First off, if it doesn't apply to you then stop reacting as if it does. Secondly, it's not an insult so much as it's fact that humans act more on misinformation and faith than they do logic and reason. (If anything, all the vitriol I've gotten for this comment is evidence enough to prove it--you're all reacting to a hypothetical scenario that didn't happen--never mind the embittering circumstances that inspired not just the comment thread but the video we just watched.)
      People are acting out and threatening a voice actor for a role she played and this has been a long standing problem.
      Alison Arngrim, who played Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie, has been assaulted several times for her role, with people going as far as chucking bottles at her head. She jokes about it now, saying that the assault was the signifier that let her know that she made it [in the industry,] but that doesn't make what happened to her okay, and she's only one of hundreds of examples I can pick from. I chose her because that quote, "it's when I had a bottle thrown at my head that I knew I made it," left quite the impression on my psyche. I was horrified for Alison and, like now, was actually in the minority opinion. My family and friends at the time actually _blamed her_ for taking the role in the first place and expected her to "know better," all because they hated the fictional character. How fucked up is that?
      Anyway, minor tangent aside, most people struggle with fiction. It's why you can't always leave a make-believe world after reading the last book in a series or why you sometimes hate someone after having a bad dream about them. None of this is bad unless you act upon that instinct. Asking for space so you can process the dream is fine but hitting your partner and yelling at them for what they did in said dream is not and these entitled gamer boys, are doing just that. They're even threatening innocent _toddlers_ for Christ's sake. Instead of being mad at me (for something you should Google first) try and save that anger for those who've actually done harm and do something about it.
