  • This is the last in a series of videos I've made with varying levels of quality lol. The Parappa Series is a staple of my first year having moved out of the family house. It means a lot to me, and I finally got the chance to finish this little review/ retrospective out. PLEASE give this series a try, and let me know what you think!

I never saw Lammy as really that out there in terms of craziness and psychedelics when compared to other games of that generation and prior. Granted i played lammy first in 2016, but i think why it was seen as weird was that the playstation was the realistic and gritty console.

I really appreciate seeing a video that goes into the different aspects of this game more than just the standard story and gameplay overview. I'd say it was quite
    **COOL**
    GOOD
    BAD
    AWFUL
Though a fan of the series for some years now, it wasn't until a few months ago that I've actually tried playing them. Since then, my PaRappa fixation has been at an all-time high. : )
I may find PaRappa 2 to be the most fun and replayable of the bunch, but UJL's always had the most of my respect. Everything about it from the story to the presentation is just so striking, over-the-top, and bold! PaRappa 2 has always felt a bit more tame, and a bit less out-there compared to the first two games, which I may go in a bit more detail later, seeing as you also have a PaRappa 2 video (and I just know this is about to become an overly-long comment as is :P ).
I really liked the stark contrast of the series' two main protagonists, PaRappa and Lammy.
In the first game, we're introduced to a character who gets himself into less-than ideal situations, but always quickly faces it with unwavering determination. He's gotta believe, after all!
One game later, we get a bit of a wreck who's always doubting herself and doesn't like to call attention to herself. After a bit of carelessness in making sure to wake up on time, she's similarly thrust into many less-than-ideal situations, but instead, drums up (or fakes) some confidence from within, and through the course of the story, we see her get a little more headstrong.
Something I really appreciated that may seem like a miniscule and insignificant detail, was at 15:22, when you pointed out how it was the only time PaRappa was portrayed in the same way he often was in the first game, what with his iconic delusions. Not often do I see much care for attention-to-detail when it comes to simple stories and characters like this, so I'm glad you cared enough to make a direct note of it. : )
Here, I'd like to pay respects to just how ambitious Um Jammer Lammy is, and I'll start by addressing one of your points of contention.
The reason PaRappa's voice is so low quality is unfortunately a by-product of limited disc space. Being a PS1 game, they only had about 600-700 MB of storage per disc for everything. While that may be a lot in comparison to the earlier cartridge-ruled years of gaming, audio takes up a surprisingly large amount of storage compared to code and even graphics, but has the advantage of being much more easily and efficiently compressed.
Of course, the likelihood that the top brass at Sony would let a cult classic's sequel get produced as a multi-disc title was probably pretty low, thus the developers had to fit essentially double the content of PaRappa 1 into a single disc: an amazing feat considering the overall quality of the finished game.
I'm sure you've also noticed that PaRappa's cutscenes have a noticeably lower frame rate from Lammy's as well. FMVs (Full-motion Videos) also take up quite a bit of storage, which is probably why PaRappa (the side character in Lammy's game) had much shorter cutscenes in the first place, not to mention them being much choppier to boot. It certainly makes sense to focus their main efforts on the main character, so they probably never intended PaRappa's interludes to really have an actual story like Lammy's, hence, why they make little sense.
All that is to say it's a very admirable effort to even bother with cramming Um Jammer Lammy with so much content in the first place: seven stages, battle and co-op modes, a second scenario, etc. PaRappa's inclusion may seem like it was shoe-horned in to attract more potential buyers, but I more so see it as a stunning display of achievement on all of the artists' and developers' parts to make Um Jammer Lammy even more special.
Well, I could go on, but I've been typing this for 40 minutes already, and you probably get the point by now. :P

@@Mr.Gabagool I love this message so much! Thank you for taking so much time to write all this, it's awesome for me and everyone else to read. I totally agree about it being a total feat that this game is on one disc, but if Alpha 3 could get put on a GBA cart... Lammy could've gotten a slightly better print here. Regardless, I think that they were under a major time crunch by the time they did ads and whatever else. So much goes into it. But I appreciate the dedication Matsura and the team brought to Lammy, it's genuinely inspiring, and turned out amazing despite the struggle.

The reason for Parappa's weird mixing and audio quality for this game, is fully due to console limitations! The game was so packed onto the disc that in order to fit it all in, they had to drastically lower the audio quality, and strip many audio effects just so they could ship it all on one disc. If you listen to the soundtracks on CD you can hear how it fully was going to be, but it's interesting none the less :)
